4.0 out of 5 starsEnding was a little dissapointing.

———SPOILER ALERT———
I loved the book... man I read it in less than 2 days! Except I wasn't quite satisfied with the ending. It's just that the goodbye between Luxa, Ripred, Vikus, and the other was so brief. Gregor just said "goodbye" and slid the rock into place "parting them forever". I guess it was just so disappointing that they just said "goodbye" without any emotion after all they've been through together, after the countless times they saved each others' lives, they just said "goodbye" without even getting emotional. I guess I was just disappointed that there were no twists or anything. I was hoping Luxa would come up to the overland for a couple of days, or if Gregor's family didn't move to Virginia he would promise to make occasional visits to the Underland, or anything that would just assure that Gregor and Luxa lived a happy life and Luxa kept in contact with Gregor. Does anyone agree with me?

3.0 out of 5 starsThat's how it ends?
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2014
No specifics here, but I was very much a fan of this book series up until the last chapter happened. I feel like it ended one chapter too soon, and I'm left feeling unsatisfied about the entire series as a result.

I was about to enthusiastically tell my friends to read this series if they're fans of both Suzanne Collins' writing style and books about friendly talking animals, but wanted to wait until I finished it first. Now I'm not sure I should recommend it to them.

(Yes, I am an adult who enjoys reading children's novels.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun adventure!

I really enjoyed the book “Gregor and the Code of Claw.” It was a fun adventure.
What I like the most about this book is that it is full of action and does a really good job finishing the story of Gregor and the prophecies. I like that Gregor is 12 years old because we are almost the same age, and he is a warrior. I also like the talking animals and that they can bond with Gregor and become his best friends.
The only thing I don’t like about this book is that sometimes the story can be a little too slow. Sometimes it seems like the story should be moving on, but it gets a little bit stuck,
I would recommend this series to any kid looking for an exciting adventure with a hero they can relate to. Gregor isn’t perfect, but he learns from his mistakes and is a true hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make this series into a movie PLEASE!

Just finished the series for the second time. This time it was with my 12-year-old daughter who was once an avid reader but lost interest in books when we bought her a tablet. I am happy to say that the Underland Chronicles were able to tear her away from YouTube and TikTok for a few weeks. I’ve never seen her so eager to read! When we finished the last book, she asked the question I’ve been wondering for years- “Why haven’t they made this into a movie?!” I first read the series many years ago with my son. He has read all of the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson books and countless other series, but the Underland Chronicles have remained his favorite through the years. The series is a superbly written fantastical adventure. I laughed. I cried. And I regularly recommend these books to my students who love the fantasy genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sad but satisfying conclusion

This is my second time reading this series and it is still a page turner. The parallels this story has to real life are brutal, but maybe it is what we need to change. My only criticism is the age of Gregor/Luxa. I find it extremely unlikely and really distracting to the story. If they were even two or three years older it would make more sense and feel more realistic. I just can't imagine the 6th graders I work with ever being able to do the things they do. (Even the ones that have a ton of grit) That is my only hang up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lacking closure from a kids point of view....

I started the Overlander series in order to pre-read it for my 10 year old daughter and 9 year old son. I got hooked and just finished book 5! I loved book 5 simply because I loved the series. The bottom line is that the end of book 5 left my 10 year old daughter in tears, feeling like the book series had just dumped her off on a corner.:) She was left wanting an explanation for what happened to the characters that she fell in love with and invested so much time in. My 9 year old son is on book 2 and I'll let him continue as I'd rather he over invest in a book than not read at all. :)

The biggest suggestion I could give to a parent considering this series for their child is to determine whether or not your child will be absolutely crushed by an ending that does not give the type of closure that most kids require after investing time and heart into 5 books. The author makes you feel like a part of the Underland family and just when you start to get to know your family....boom. It's all over, book 5 ends, things are sad, key characters are dead, and Gregor goes home with no indication from the author that he may return to the Underland. It's not the worst thing that could happen and I would still recommend the series but on an emotional level for young teens and older children there was not the level of emotional resolution that I feel most kids would hope for. Now, had this not been the last book it would be a different feeling but it seems it may be.

For mature folks and kids. Suzanne Collins carries a lot of what her father experienced into her books. The terrible destruction of war, the innocents but also those who risk their lives to create a better world. I cried as I cried when the other creatures lost their lives in the previous books. It can be so dismal reading this series when so many of the wonderful creatures the main character "bonds" with die awful deaths. But you keep going, you don't stop, you have to keep going to create a safer world. And I love, just love how the main character communicates with his bond animal.

And I love, just love the puzzles and clues the author leaves in the books. I wish the series could be placed in the hands of a director for a series of movies as the Harry Potter and Hunger Games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful series, conflicting ending
Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2016

As a whole, I'd rate this series five stars for its impressive setting and wonderful characters. Me and my little sisters love this series because of the characters. I personally can never get enough of Ripred. He's the best.

But I have to rate this last book four stars because of its conflicting ending.

***WARNING -- SPOILER ALERT***

NEGATIVE POINTS: In this last book, Gregor has a revelation that the prophecies might be false, which I struggle with, because even though Gregor believes they are false, I as the reader do not.

Also, the book's tone is very dark, for kids at least. It's about war, and about growing up, and hard decisions. Not what a child will easily be able to read. It may be hard for them to take, and they may either take it and learn, or finish in tears.

POSITIVE POINTS: However, I do NOT condemn this book for its (for lack of a better word) indecisive ending. I do not really like the confusion and pain of war, but the suspenseful ending, to me, is satisfying. At the end, the reader does not know whether Gregor and co. never see the Underland again. I admit, it does leave the reader feeling slightly cheated. But really, I consider this a positive point because it lets the reader decide. I think Suzanne Collins meant it this way. The reader wants them to move to Virginia, fine! They move to Virginia. The reader wants them to return to the Underland? So be it! The reader can choose.

This series has to be one of the finest I've ever read, despite its dark tone and conflicting ending. The characters are endearing and unforgettable, and the world the Collins creates is beautiful.

Choose for yourself whether you read it. I promise you will not regret it. But be careful with small children; the ending will not go well with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gregor & Ripred - student & teacher
Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2011

There hasn't been a greater influence in Gregor's life, or Luxa's, than Ripred. A carractor full of wisdom, insight, comic comments and love. Here is a carractor who's been more a parent than his own parents. In Gregor's family, he is the parental figure, while his Mom, Dad & Grandma are all bed ridden. The final war was started in the "Marks Of Secret" and it ends here. Gregor suffers more physical injury but his worse injury comes when a close friend dies. Then before he can morn properly his Dead-beat parents climb out of bed and take him home. Gregor's parents try to act as if the past two years never happened, what a couple of jerks! They totally ignore his physical and emotional scars. then when he gets home he ammediately has a nightmare. He goes out to gather his thoughts and when he returns his parents yell at him for leaving. Like I said they are a couple of jerks.
Gregor has help in the "Code of Claw", Lizzie finally shows up and helps to crack the code. In this story Boots is nothing but comic relief, but Ares finally shows everyone what kind of worrior he really is. Howard and Nike become close, but Suzanne didn't really build on their friendship, to bad because they are a couple of great carractors. Luxa has a smaller part in this story, she is there more for comfort than anything else.
Then there is Ripred, it is impossible to discribe him in less than the five books already written. You learn about him in this story. He & Lizzie hit it off. He's still trying to keep Gregor alive by teaching him. By the end of the Code Of Claw everyone Gregor has looked to for guidence is gone, except Ripred. Vikus has a stroke, Solevet dies and Mareth is still physically unable to do much. That leaves Gregor & Ripred to lead & fight. They do get help from Lapblood and a small band of rats on there side, plus Temp and a huge army of crawlers and many nibblers who survived the firelands. Gregor & Ares fly off to finish their fight with the enormous Bane, while Ripred stays behind to direct the troops. What happens next is heart breaking, and you feel for poor Gregor. You end up wishing for Gregor to die instead of feeling the lose of such a close friend. you do not wish for him to suffer any longer than he has already. He goes through the story thinking he is going to die. How would you handle it knowing you were destined to die. Only a few who have died from cancer can answer that one.
Please read the Underland Chronicles and leave a comment for me to read. Tell me if you liked the story as well as I did? Tell me if his parents acted any different than you would have? I would have moved to Virgina after his first trip down, and not after the last. Tell me what you think about Luxa as a future queen, about Ares, Howard, Nike, Temp, Mareth, Hazard, and lets not forget the best carractor of the story - Ripred. I rank this story right up there with Harry Potter, its that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Post tramatic stress at 12 years old, Wow!

Gregor is 12 years old and he has already experienced the horrors of war. Add to that the knowledge of his own death, how would you handle carrying that secret around? Someone very close to him dies and yet as soon as his mother comes back from the fount hospital she wants to take him home. Just pick-up and leave as if the past 15 monthes never happened. As if Gregor can go back to the life he had before he & Boots fell. His body full of scars he has to keep hidden. The emotions running through him after losing a very close friend. Ask yourself how you would feel after the adventures he experinced. This book series is second only to the Harry Potter book series. All five books are well written but they do get better as Gregor grows up.
Gregor has experienced Love & Loss in the "Code of Claw". He learns how to fight in the dark without light from Ripred. Ripred is more of a father to Gregor than his real father. Both of Gregor's parents are bed ridden in the last book and so his two little sisters look to him for guidence. Lizzie finally has a much larger part in this story and Boots is nothing but comedy relief but the comedy comes at just the right time. Ares shows everybody what kind of worrior he really is (About time).
I just wish Suzanne Collins had a little more closure. What will happen to everybody in the future. What happens to Howard & Nike, Luxa & Hazards, Temp, Aurora and finally Ripred? How does Gregor grow up, what does he become in the future. His sisters Lizzie & Boots what happens to them? Does Boots retain her ability to talk in crawler? Does Lizzie learn ecolocaion herself? This series is so good that you become emotionally attached to these people and creatures, you care about what happens to them. So please I incurage you to read all five of these books, but please read them in order, its well worth your time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definatly not just for kids

I really never saw myself reading books for ages "9 and up," but a friend recommended the series and I became hooked. The first book had me hesitant, I'm not usually a big fan of child narrators, but Collins proved me wrong. The other problem I usually have with younger age books is that they are too simplistic. Once again, Collins proves me wrong. The writing is simplistic enough to be believable for a 12yr old's point of view, but the plot itself is unpredictable and full of really good twists and keeps you thinking.

The action pieces are also something I did not expect, as I thought they would be downplayed for a younger age. Instead, they are well written and demonstrate the brutalities of battle (even if the ones fighting are not human) and although not the most gruesome scenes I've read (I read horror genre too). I was surprised that the level of brutality was recommended for ages as young as nine, but as an older reader I found it refreshing to not have fights and battles sugar coated.

The characters are engaging and the whole Underland world is complete and intriguing with the many 'peoples' that live there and the differences all the groups have. I cannot recommend how a reader of say age nine would like this series, but I can say that as a 22yr old, if you don't mind reading something a 'the lower level,' I defiantly recommend it for many ages over 9.
