5.0 out of 5 starsA story of relationships

Life On Hold by Karen McQuestion is a gripping novel about the power of friendship and following your heart. Rae Maddox’s life has been anything but normal. Her mom, Gina, thinks nothing of packing up and moving. New apartment, new town, new job, all of it a new adventure to Gina. But to Rae, each move was just one more friend lost, one more chance to be the outsider. When they arrive in Wisconsin, Gina promises to stay put until Rae graduates high school. Feeling cautiously optimistic, Rae begins to adjust to the social world at Whitman High School, making new friends and making plans for college. Everything is going smoothly until one day when the vice principal asks her to show a new student around school. Allison Daly has been bounced around between relatives since her parents died in a house fire. Things begin to go bad as Rae begins to learn more and more about Allison’s troubling past. Will Allison’s past continue to haunt her? Will Rae finally find the home she has always wanted?
Life On Hold is a powerful story about regret, friendship and dealing with the past. While it is marketed as a Young Adult novel, it is a great read for all ages as it deals with suicide and the misunderstands that even adults run into. All the characters were relatable and believable. It had sweet moments between friends, dramatic moments and touching moments that serve as a reminder that we can make a difference in someone’s life by simply being a friend. One of my favorite quotes from the book is “You never really know what a difference you can make in someone’s life, if you’re to let them in.” Rae was usually on the outside looking in, not allowing herself to get too attached as Gina could decide to pack and leave at any moment. But there is something about Allison that is familiar and draws them together. While she doesn’t fully understand why but when Allison needs her the most, Rae must answer the call. I highly recommend Life On Hold for all ages.

I gave 1 star b/c I actually liked Rae. She is a likable teenage girl although upon reading the story, the characters seem more like 17 than 15. The book description made Allison sound like a sociopath or at least someone really bad and the sleepover was supposed to be like a life-changing event. Nope, just kids sneaking out and a bunch of dull stuff. I didn't even understand Allison's character at the end. Makes no sense. The story is not suspenseful or even that interesting. I don't even think my teens would like it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweetest friendship with a hint of mystery!

Well done, Mrs. McQuestion! Once again, you've delivered an exceptional read that I didn't want to end. This is my third book in a row of hers and I'm headed straight to the store to find my fourth. I have yet to find a character I didn't have an emotional reaction to and, for the first time in months, I'm finding myself reading in check out lines, waiting rooms and late into the night as well as first thing in the morning while I drink my coffee. Before, I would play sudoku or some other game on my phone because I couldn't find a book that really gripped me... No more! Keep them coming, please! More, more, more!

Rae lives with her single mother, Gina, in an apartment. She’s lived in so many different ones in so many different places that she has trouble remembering which one was where. She’s tried to get her mother to promise to stay put this time until she finishes high school, and she hopes just maybe they will. But she’s wary of making too many new friends anyway, just in case. One day she’s summoned to the office and asked to mentor a new student. But there’s something strange about the new girl. She won’t talk—about herself or anything else. At least not to Rae. But Rae finds her in the kitchen of their apartment,, talking to Gina. Gina suggests that Rae should have a sleepover and invite the new girl, Alison, and her friend Kylie. Things happen at the sleepover that shock and surprise Rae, but she begins to like Alison. And then there’s Nick. And Blake. And a very shocking accusation. I don’t always like YA books this much, but I sat up late and finished this in one sitting. (Also I grew up in Wisconsin, so the setting felt familiar to me.)

I enjoyed this book written from a teen girl's perspective.
Lots of things happening with her mom, two school friends, principal and a lost, traumatized teen girl. Everything happening in her life seemed true to being fifteen. Her stability was impressive. Her reserve about people was real. Well written, emotional and exceptional.

This is a sweet story that speaks to high school kids. I may need to purchase a few copies for my 9th and 10th grade girls. It is a short read that opens the door to lots of discussion about transient families, choices, and teenage mental health. Another winner.

I have to say I expected a lot more from this book. I just finished her last book “Half a heart” and absolutely loved it for its content and unpredictability, as well as its intended audience- older adult. This was so predictable, and not aimed at the same audience either, this was aimed at a high school age, or younger adult.

4.0 out of 5 stars For teens, good story on mother-daughter relationship - and friendships in high school
Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2012

The mother-daughter relationship between Rae and Gina reminded me a lot of the movie "Anywhere but here" with Natalie Portman - the reasonable, shy teenager and her extravert mother.
This story completely threw me off track (in a good way). I thought the story was going to be about Rae being dragged from one town to another, but it's really about Alison's character.
Rae is so unassuming and lonely - but she discovers there's a lot worse off than she is when Alison arrives in her high school. Alison is secretive to the point of seeming rude and a snob. But somehow Raes' friends and mother take interest in her (miserable people tend to have that effect).
Rae doesn't know what to think, between Alison's sometimes manipulative attitudes and the very different account about her she hears from the school's bully, with whose family Alison lives.
Little by little, Rae puts together bits and pieces of Alison's past. Tension builds up as a major crisis later, everything comes to light.
This was not your typical teenage girls'story (by that I mean it's no juvenile version of Sex and the City - there's no clothes or hairstyle chats between girlfriends). It is, however, a story about nothing being quite what it seems on the surface, and how other human beings are mysterious worlds of their own - and how difficult it is to fit in as a teenager.
It's a good story. It's not tragic, it's not full of humour or suspense, it's more life-like - and I liked it!

I only gave 3 stars probably because the last few books I’ve read have been teen age books and I’m anything but a teenager. Ma Mc question is an excellent writer. Her stories are down to earth, believable and well told. I would highly recommend this book to young people. It’s a good book.

5.0 out of 5 stars McQuestion Holds Her Own In The YA Group!
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2011

Life On Hold was the first Young Adult novel I read by Karen McQuestion after falling in love with two of her Adult novels. She is on par with other YA Authors of this genera like Sarah Dessen.

The story is about a 15 year old girl who, along with her slightly flighty mother, moves every time the going gets tough. Now, she is 45 minutes away from the only other family she knows, her Grandparents who are so welcoming they even have a bedroom for her at their house. Her own bedroom where she can keep anything she wants while her mother drags her around the country.

After her mother promised they would stay in one place for the next two and a half years so Rae can graduate from High School where they currently life, Rae finally lets her guard down and beings to make a few friends.

Being the smart, responsible kid she is known to be, her Vice Principal matches her up with another new student who could use some help learning her way around the school. This opens Rae up to friendships she has never experiences before and pushes her to learn to stand up for herself to her mother.

Karen McQuestion has a knack for telling a story through a teenager's eye without making the reader feel like she is reading someone's diary. I was hooked at the start of the book and didn't want to put it down until the story was finished. She has a way of neatly wrapping up the story lines so the book feels complete and well rounded.

I recommend this book to any teenage girl or woman looking for a heartfelt coming of age story.
