5.0 out of 5 starsYellowrock is Gold
Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2018
Jane Yellowrock, Faith Hunter’s protagonist, is one of the genre’s best characters— in a field where protagonists all are strong, snarky, sexy women, Jane is far more. Jane is a complete, rounded character, with a past that created her, nature and nurture, and also the ability to grow as a character and a woman.

The previous novel in the series emphasized her Cherokee background; this book puts more emphasis on the Christianity she learned in an Evangelical orphanage (I can’t help but suspect that she’d be happier had she been brought up by Catholic nuns— same ‘guilt as response to sin’, but with a more systematic way of dealing with it).

For all the action— and the Jane Yellowrock Novels are almost back-to-back action— the series thus far is really about relationships. The most important relationship in Jane’s life is with the other would within her body, the cougar called “Beast”.

There are also her relationships with her closest friend Molly, who is a witch, with her employer, Leo, who is the vampire Master of the City, with her two possible romantic relationships, one an undercover cop and one with Leo’s chief blood servant and head of security. Jane’s introspection regarding these relationships and others are what make this series superior to many others in the “strong snarky woman versus supernatural bad guys”genre.

3.0 out of 5 starsThis series still fails to engage me.
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2015
Unfortunately this series still fails to engage me. Similar to the previous instalment in the series this book is okay to read but only just.

As the book blurb states, the werewolves as well as a bunch of other weres have decided to come out of the closet and announce their presence to the mundane world. Unfortunately the werewolves have a bit of a grudge towards the vampires. Quite a bit of a grudge actually. In the underworld of the supernatural world of Faith Hunter, a grudge means nasty secret plots, blood being splattered around and general mayhem. Naturally Jane is caught in the middle.

The basic story is good and the writing is quite okay from a purely technical point of view. Jane have to do quite a bit of research and detective work as the story develops. There is no lack of action and those parts are quite okay as well. There is a fair amount of things going on though and it felt a bit like the author just threw in ideas that she had but never really developed them but rather used them as background props.

The author also continues to do a quite okay job of spinning together “explanations” as to the creation in the past and presence today of these supernatural creatures with events and recounts (with a bit of artistic freedom of course) from the human legacy of religious mythology.

My main problem with this book is that it fails to engage me. The story is told in such a way that it sometimes feels more like a historical recount than the action filled, supernatural adventure that it is. Jane herself really lacks charisma and she does not seem to develop in any larger degree either, neither as a character nor as a supernatural creature. There is little humour, wittiness, bantering or otherwise entertaining comments or dialogue in the book.

At this point I am a wee bit “on the fence” as to whether I want to continue to spend time on this series. It is not a bad series but it has left me with a bit of a “meh” feeling after the last two books. I really do not like to stop in the middle of a series though so it is likely that I will give it one more try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with reservations

I enjoy the plot lines and characterizations but give this book a 4 rather than a 5 because there is a scene in which a witch is casting a spell that goes on excruciatingly long. I wonder sometimes if these kind of scenes are filler. Until now like when Jane go s to her soul room or goes through a Cherokee cleansing ceremony the length has been acceptable and even educational but not in this book. I would still recommend this series but be forewarned that that there may be scenes you would want to skim or even skip.

I liked this book. I found the story and other characters entertaining, although Jane could have been a bit less guilt-ridden and anxty. Not all the bad things that happened in this world were her fault! If you enjoy being lost in a filled with paranormal people, you will like this book and the others that follow in the series.

The book had good detail, which I enjoy in a book. Jane does put herself in situations you'd think a security expert would know to avoid. But this is a fun series to read. Beast is funny and a cool twist, and the vampires are pretty interesting on their own. I look forward to enjoying the rest of the series....like that there are many books to follow as I like getting caught up in a world away from this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intense!

The continuation of Jane Yellowrock's story is just as intense and riveting as her previous books. As a Cherokee Skinwalker, she is the only one left of her kind. She is able to turn into any animal of her choosing, using magic and her genetic inheritance.
Jane was found wandering in the woods at about the age of twelve. Scared and naked, she is placed in a Christian orphanage until she is eighteen. After several years, the memory of what she is comes back to her.
Using her ability to track, and her extreme weapons training, Jane becomes a vampire slayer, tracking and killing dangerous rogues.
If you like paranormal urban fantasy, this series is for you. Faith Hunter has built an amazing world with a deep historical background. Her characters are three dimensional and each story is meticulous in its reasoning. The books should be read in order or you won't understand the context of what's going on.
I highly recommend adding the Jane Yellowrock series to your keeper shelf. I have read these books more than once.

Summary
Jane Yellowrock is a shape-shifting skinwalker - and a vampire killer for hire. But lately she's found herself taking blood money from the very vampires she used to hunt...

Things are heating up in the Big Easy. Weres have announced their existence to the world, and revived the bitter tensions that run between them and their old enemies: vampires. As a trusted employee of Leo Pellissier, Blood Master of the City, Jane finds herself caught in the cross fire.

When Jane is attacked by a pack of marauding werewolves, she is thankful for the help of a mysterious stranger named Girrard. He explains that he used to be Leo's "Mercy Blade," a sacred position charged with killing vampires who have gone insane. What Jane doesn't know is why this powerful assassin left New Orleans - or, more troubling, why he's now returned. It's definitely not to make Jane's life easier...

The Good
I really did enjoy this book. The action is just as deadly and bloody as the previous books. The suspense is killer, and I can't help but sweat right along with Jane after the continuous confrontations and battles.

We get further insight on the backgrounds of all characters, which only enriches the plot. Plus, Jane is finding it harder to keep her secret identity hidden as more people begin to become suspicious of her true nature.

The revelations on Jane's earlier life were very intense. I feel a little more at ease knowing more of her background, even if it was shocking. The relationship evolving between Beast and Jane is growing progressively hilarious though.

As always, you can tell Faith Hunter did her homework for I learned a lot about weapons and motorcycles I never knew.

I found Girrard intriguing and the secondary characters still keep me interested.

The Bad
Jane has changed from the heroine we knew her as in Skinwalker. She is somewhat of an emotional wreck and in constant angst. She is obsessed with her boyfriend Rick, but she has only been with him for a month, and they rarely see each other. I feel this is out of character for Jane. She has insecurities, doubts, and guilt, which kind of ruins the tough, no nonsense character I once knew.

Also, the plot was a little confusing and convoluting at times. Faith made things complicated when there was no need for them to be. Even Jane was confused most of the time as people gave her half-truths and revealed one clue while hiding others for no reason.

The Snuggly
A lot of sexual tension.

Overall
I would still suggest this book, especially if you read the other two. But the direction of the series is starting to get me nervous. I want the old Jane back. Not the second-guessing, guilt-trip Jane that has come out in this book. She needs her confidence back.

The Jane Yellowrock series is back with Mercy Blade the third book in the series. The Book opens with Jane waking to find breaking news on the tv with the transformation of a black were-leopard on a national televised news station. Oh great, the weres are coming out of the closet. Rick, who is with Jane in North Carolina to pack her belongings for a return to New Orleans for a 6 month extension on her job working for Leo Pellissier wakes and Jane realizes he knows more about the weres than he's telling. There's not a lot they can tell each other about their jobs and this secrecy is what almost gets Rick killed. Rick goes missing while undercover, and Jane is doing her job of protecting Leo at Vamp HQ, there are were-leopards staying at HQ to broker a deal with Leo and the clans when werewolves repel down from the ceiling and attack despite all her efforts at sealing the building. Safia, a were-leopard is murdered in Leo's office in the ensuing chaos and an unknown creature has escaped his room. During the investigation she finds not only Rick has been cheating but also with the woman who has been murdered. All this leads Jane down a path she might not recover from. Leo sends Jane out to broker a meeting with the wolves who have returned to the area and are not wanted by Leo. She is saved from death by the Mercy Blade himself, Girrard DiMercy. A man who once worked for Leo's family, fled and now wants to return to the fold. No one knows who or what Girrard DiMercy is. Things also heat up between Jane and George Dumas, a human blood-servant to Leo.
Jane's relationships are very complicated and one can see these are not going to be resolved easily but Jane is a very complex character. Between her guilt about sex out of wedlock, to her feelings about proof Rick has been cheating, and her unresolved feelings about George Dumas.
If you are looking for instant gratifcation, easy plots, no hair pin twists and turns, less action and every question answered then this series is not for you.
Faith Hunter is a plot weaver with many twists and questions in Mercy Blade, much more so than Skinwalker or Blood Cross. There are unanswered questions left for readers at the end of this book; cliffhanger rings a bell. Is George Dumas the one for Jane and is Rick the bad boy I saw coming? Is Leo back to his semi-normal self? What will the introduction of the weres mean for Jane and discovering who she really is, and what that means for her future? Evie, Molly's sister, who is rooming with Jane is disconserting at best. And George, well what can you say about a man who really cannot spare any of his life for a woman outside of vampires? Beast is my all time favorite supernat, probably because she cuts to the chase and everything for her is cut and dry.
The introduction of a new character in the third book I thought was an excellent idea. Keeping it fresh is what it's all about in a series. The back half of the book is where Faith Hunter keeps you turning pages, with more turns than a corkscrew.
Faith has the ability to make us identify with her characters which is not an easy feat. She makes Jane vulnerable, guilt ridden, lost but hard as nails, loyal to a fault and kick ass biker all in one. Her detailing of the scenes and surrounding areas of New Orleans is breathtaking and you feel for Jane. You want to help her kick some ass and tell her it's going to be ok.
I personally thought this book was the best so far. I prefer to be kept quessing and kept on the edge, but then I'm looking for the long term and I hope this series will be around for a long time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book number three of a twelve book urban fantasy series

Book number three of a twelve book urban fantasy series. I read the nice MMPB. I have ordered books 4 and 5 in the series from Big River.

Jane Yellowrock is a full blood Cherokee of unknown age who is a skinwalker and vampire hunter. She is the only skinwalker that she knows of since her father died and she killed the other one. BTW, I am partial to Cherokees as my wife is 1/4 Cherokee.

Now that the Vampires are fully out in the open, the Weres have decided to join them in the open. And the opening does not go well when there are old scores to settle.

The author has a website at:
faithhunter.net/

BTW, thanks to whoever it was who suggested this series to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too many characters, too little substance

The third installment of the Jane Yellowrock series was, as far as I am concerned, less interesting than the first two, despite all the new supernatural creatures that were introduced.

One reason for that is the amount of repetition (from the previous books)in the story. I mean exact sentence repetition. It jarred me out of my groove more than once.

Too many characters, not enough for them to do. None of the new sups (with the possible exception of the MB) were fully fleshed out characters, no pun intended. I was dismayed by the lack of interaction between these sups and the established characters. Even Evangeline's presence was unnecessary, aside from the one scene where she actually does something.

The mystery itself was interesting- but unlike the first two, I was able to put this one down. Several times.

The saving grace is the last part of the book. Jane is breathtakingly awesome in the final scenes. I felt for her. She is the reason why I will read the next book.
