Enjoyable, But Repetitive and Somewhat Predictable

I enjoyed the first book in this series quite a bit, despite reviews which said it wasn't as polished as the author's later books.
This second book in the series uses some of the same plot devices as the first book (e.g., the main character attends the meeting of a society devoted to the study of an interesting historical event), which felt a little lazy to me. There were at least a couple of other re-used plot devices, one of which was re-used twice in this book. I actually groaned "again?" at one point.
On top of that, I'd pretty much figured out the major mystery halfway through the book, though I had not worked out all the details.
It was still an entertaining read, and I enjoyed seeing how things unfolded. I'll be starting the 3rd book in the series shortly.
