“Adjustment Team” one of the 121 Philip K. Dick’s (1928-1982) science fiction tales, and is the short story which formed the basis of the film “The Adjustment Bureau,” although the short story is different a number of ways from the movie. See my review of the movie.
There are only three similarities between the story and the film. In both, there is a divine arranged group of individuals who are members of an adjustment team. In both, the team changes individuals to reach a better situation for a large group of people. Second, in both the plan to make the change runs afoul because a member of the team fails to perform the mission of the team on time because the team member falls asleep. Third, both main male characters come in conflict with the team when they see them performing their task.
Otherwise the two are radically different. The names of the people are different as is their jobs. The main character in the story works for a realty firm and is married, while in the film, he is a congressman and single. The team in the film want to stop the congressman from marrying a woman, while the team’s role in the story involves real estate. People are changed by the team in the story but not in the film.
This aside, the short story is worth reading even if, like me. you saw the film first. At only 99 cents the kindle version is a cheap way to have a very interesting half hour.
