How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

Michael Austerlitz
5.0 out of 5 starsThe first book in an excellent trilogy
Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2021
The first in the Charlie Hardee Trilogy, Swierzinsky takes you for ride. I was familiar with the author via comics, and heard he wrote noir fiction and non fiction. This and its subsequent titles were recommended to me. I finished all three in a week. This book is fun, funny, exciting, and naibiting. Charlie Hardee is former police consultant from Philly with a sordid past who finds solace now as a house sitter out in rich houses. One assignment finds him in LA. What turns from a routine job to fighting for his and others lives, makes for an intriguing mix of crime noir and action - think jack reacher. Highly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 starsInteresting idea, wanted to like it, writing falls short
Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2014
Some clever ideas in here and well-formed characters, but the writing's trying too hard to deliver which is at best distracting and at worst annoying.

Shifting character POV frequently within the same chapter is an interesting idea but it doesn't really work, there's too much shifting and it's jarring and distracting. Plus the cost is it becomes hard to develop a connection with any one or two central characters. There are some clever moments - and what would be actually pretty great reveals if the author wasn't over-explaining the scenes and everything the characters are thinking, then doing the same from another character's POV. It's like watching a magician who talks too much and by the time the trick is pulled off you're too bored to get excited. Between this and the number of times the same characters sustain life-threatening injuries I found the book exasperating. I love well-crafted fast-paced thrillers but unfortunately this isn't that.

If these issues are worked out in later books I'd be curious to see more, otherwise probably will pass - I struggled a little to get through this. On the fence about 2 vs 3 stars but overall enough good moments that I didn't dislike it.

Comic book plot, sit com characters, faux noir dialogue. This is really a bad book. But evidently all that is required for the majority of readers. Sad really.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't bother

Read Chandler instead. This book is AWFUL. And not in a good way. It's awful in an awful way, like you'll carry it around for weeks not wanting to read it but not wanting to give up on it either until which point--maybe after a month--you realize you could have read five other great books in the time you've spent not reading this one totally retarded book. SKIP.

1.0 out of 5 stars not good at all
Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2011
First off, I enjoyed some of this author's other works, But, this one, quite frankly was awful. The premise is completely ludicrous. The 'bad guys' are ridiculous. Plus, how many times do we have to be reminded of how cool the main character is because he watches old movies? It's almost like the author was projecting a bit with that don't ya think? The writing seems like it is nothing more than a collection of soundbytes at times. Probably would've made a fantastic graphic novel, but as a novel, it just doesn't cut it

1.0 out of 5 stars Just finished...

Preposterous story, poorly written, unappealing characters, lots of loose ends hanging at the conclusion.
Doesn't come close to Elmore Leonard, in my opinion.
