4.0 out of 5 starsAfter some mental struggling, decided on 4 stars....

First, i've read this series years back b4 it became audiobooks. i actually have the paperbacks.

Next, i got to book 10 before taking a break as certain MFC traits were scraping my skin raw and couldn't take it anymore.

Having said those cryptic comments, y'all this is a really good action, paranormal, mostly badass female book series.
Inconsistencies:

*how can she go toe-to-toe with Leo a couple of times AND survive, yet lesser vamps & rogues injures her so easily? autthor describes her fighting styles thru out the series. either she can fight a master vamp and not die, or she can take down lesser vamps without always getting injured!!!

* what is it with taking on unnecessary guilt? she's not in control of everyone else's actions!! the author didnt make Jane all knowing, all seeing, etc...so why have this character continually BLAME herself for what you, the author, puts out of her control? It's beyond aggravating !!! and it's CONSTANT!!

*Beast is smarter, more cognitive, (cant think of better word) after being merged with human intelligence , emotions, sense of morals, etc... and her separate soul keeps saying that Jane & Beast are better together....So, please stop with the comments...JANE IS KILLER ONLY!!! obviously, Beast by now knows that Jane as a young child didnt mean to steal her soul, as well as Jane has softer sides to her with her love for Angie Baby...So, Author, you could make it as if Beast was just pushing Jane's buttons rather than really believing and saying that all the time. This book shows that Jane loves Beast and felt lost without her when she disappeared for awhile. SO HOW DOES BEAST REALLY FEEL ABOUT JANE?

*Yes, to all of you who suspect there will be a love triangle or quadrangle, but this is not a reverse harem book! thank you Author for that at least. Yall keep going as that resolves itself.

To Amazon......please give a better rating system!!! there needs to be a way we can do half points and it needs to go up to 10, not just 5.

For yall that like Audiobooks.....the narrator for this series, Khristine Hvam is freakin awesome. she can put you right there in the action, her tone, her pacing of the story, her giving each character their own voice, man she 's just really, really, good at this!! There are about 5 narrators that i love so much that i continually check for other books they've narrated and have bot just because i know it's them and the genre is my thing....

oh and wouldnt it be nice if we could do emoji when talking in these reviews? if there's a way to do it, i dont know it! but i would totally put a smiling and a wink emoji on the above sentence.

3.0 out of 5 starsThere can be conflict without the main character actually stupidly creating it for herself.

Update:
I just finished book 5 and as much as I would like to see where the characters go, I don’t want to sit through more religious guilt, stupid decisions, out of character reactions, and repetition.

I’ll wiki the series.

**********

OK. I’m now into multiple books in this series. I had hoped that I would see a little more growth in the character than I have. As others have said I’m a little frustrated that she’s still working for Leo and nothing has changed. Either she just really likes money and has no other moral issues except some weird infatuation issue with church…

Also what is annoying is her constant need to describe the change that she and Beast have. We don’t need to hear “pain pain pain” every single time she changes, especially when she changes multiple times in one book.

Additionally I’m annoyed at how stupid she can be. We’re supposed to be loving a strong smart alpha predator who might actually be something more than what she is and she’s never tried to go figure out the past, she barely uses Aggie One Feather, she’s never figuring out things that are so startlingly obvious to the reader that are only that because of the things she’s seen and experienced.

Then there’s this weird thing that is sitting bad with me . She has no issue with being a bad ass. Looking sexy. Kicking ass. Wearing red lipstick. But she has a problem with sex because church? But she has no problems with killing vampires? And she doesn’t tell people things because she’s trying to keep a secret and ALWAYS to the detriment of those around her, like Molly? BUT.....she’s always complains about being left in the dark???

In this book (without revealing too many spoilers) I have no idea why she didn’t just go to Evan at the very beginning. Why she didn’t seek him out to help when she first noticed there was a problem. Not only that but the one scene where Angie baby is describing a green frog with teeth I have no idea why she didn’t figure out what she was talking about, we know the kid is prescient, and WHAT ITHER THING CAN BE A GREEN FROG WITH TEETH????? Bah!! It’s one of those moments where you’re like, this character is too smart to be this stupid! What is happening???? You’re not a stupid character why did the author write you this way?

So I will finish out the series, I hope, if I can. But if she doesn’t get me smarter I will come back and amend this to probably two stars. I dislike the repetitive information on RNA and DNA and snakes and descending into the grayness and setting into the lining of the skin and pain pain pain. Repetitive, unnecessary, and it distracts from the story overall.

Please get better, I pray. I hope in the next books she grows and the author stops making her be such a complete idiot about things. She can have conflict without actually creating it for herself.

2.0 out of 5 stars The books keep getting worse

The books are getting worse. It took a while to get use to how beast talks and acts, and I can forgive the author for repeating what seems to be her favorite phrases over and over again, but this books story just was so out there. There was to much going on, to many plots, plots held together by loose strands and now we're introducing demons and angles?? Did she run out of things to write about in the supernatural world?? First only vamps and witch's were known, then were animals and with so many creatures she could have included she skips them all for Christian angles. Not only does it not make sense logically within the book but the main character is struggling with hey identity between being a Christian and native American. Her internal struggles are what makes a character relatable. You've taken away that internal fight and character development by making christianity the one "true" religion

I liked this book. I found the story and other characters entertaining, although Jane could have been a bit less guilt-ridden and anxty. Not all the bad things that happened in this world were her fault! If you enjoy being lost in a filled with paranormal people, you will like this book and the others that follow in the series.

The book had good detail, which I enjoy in a book. Jane does put herself in situations you'd think a security expert would know to avoid. But this is a fun series to read. Beast is funny and a cool twist, and the vampires are pretty interesting on their own. I look forward to enjoying the rest of the series....like that there are many books to follow as I like getting caught up in a world away from this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid UF with a powerful protagonist. Not a stand-alone.

I read the hardback years ago, so this time, I bought the Kindle and Audible versions, and then listened to narrator Khristine Hvam voice-act the characters. I especially love Khristine’s Southern drawls, which I can never imagine whilst reading a book.

Protagonist Jane Yellowrock—a security specialist, vampire killer, and Cherokee skinwalker—has returned to her home city of Asheville, NC on a dangerous, high-profile job. I like the fully developed characters—humans, vampires, weres, witches, and shapeshifters—that leap off the page when Khristine Hvam voice-acts. I especially like young Angie-Baby and her guardian angel, Hayyel, and of course, Beast.

Excellent re-read/listen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another good Hunter/Yellowrock novel

There are, in the paranormal genre, lots of smartass, snarky female protagonists. There are lots of vampire hunters, and lots of weres (mostly werewolves, but werejaguars and other critters are becoming popular as well). So, to say that snarky Jane Yellowrock is a shape changer who hunts down and dispatches rogue vampires would be to say nothing particularly strange or out of the ordinary.

Jane Yellowrock is out of the ordinary. In addition to being a snarky, Harley-riding staker of rogue vampires, Jane has an active conscience, formed by her devout Evangelical Protestant faith.

You do not have to be an Evangelical Protestant to appreciate what this does to the character— I’m certainly neither Evangelical nor Protestant. However, the aspects of Jane’s character that are formed by her faith make her a far more interesting and well-rounded character. Jane’s backstory, being placed as a young teenager in an orphanage run by the Church of Christ, by women who brought her up in theiriimmmm Christian faith, is essential not so much to the plot as to the character of the protagonist, and she has depths to her that few paranormal protagonists can claim.

Recommended.

I liked this book because the chapters were 5 yo 7 pages long, perfect for the people who need to finish reading a chapter before doing something else. I would of gave this book a 5 star but some things made it a 3......

First- Jane makes everything her fault to fast.

Second- in 3 chapters she says "I don't know about witch magic" 4 times since that's 12 times in 15 pages.

Third- I hate her religious thing, she goes on feeling guilty about killing a human because he was a living person, but in the last book she killed a pack of were wolves ( well she didn't kill two) but they are also living people.

Fourth- she doesn't tell everything to this person or that person, she does sneaky things behind people's backs, and doesn't trust anyone, but when they show her the same thing she does to them she gets all pissy about it.

These are only some of the things that made this a 3 star....... I'll keep reading the series, but only because I bought all the books and I don't want to waste the money I spent on them

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally jane Yellowrock grows a bit of (bad --s) character.
Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2015

Finally Jane Yellowrock grows a bit of (bad --s) character and gets a wee bit of charisma. When I read the first book in this book series I thought it was a promising start but then the series kind of fizzled out. It felt like it never went anywhere and, most importantly, the main character, Jane Yellowrock, just felt bland with a severe lack of charisma. This book is an improvement in that area.

In this book I finally felt that Jane developed a bit of a personality and a bit of a bad ass attitude as well instead of trying to stay under the radar of everyone and hide her true nature. Jane has advanced in the ranks of the Mithrans. She is still considered more or less just hired help by Leo Pellissier of course but at least she is more or less in charge of the, I was about to write human but non-mithran or non-vampire might be a better wording, part of the crew. Although far from the charisma of, for example, Harry Dresden, she does show some attitude and do bite back quite a bit more in this book than in the previous ones.

The book starts off with a “simple” mission of providing security for a high level pow waw between the Mithran clans but things pretty quickly goes bad…and then they go really bad. The story is a bit of a roller coaster ride with conspiracies, werewolves, other supernatural creatures and, just to add to the excitement, the author throws in angels and daemons as well. Oh, there is a drunk werecat as well and, quite frankly, I could have been without that one.

Still, the book was fairly entertaining to read. The books in this series have always been well written but lacking in some areas making it difficult for them to keep my attention. This one was definitely an improvement over the last two books and kind of restored my interest in the series. Jane still does wallow and moan a bit about how she causes pain to others as well as about her faith and a few other things. If the author could just dump that rubbish the series would become quite good. I would also like to see some development of Jane’s powers instead of just the very vague hints that are surfacing from time to time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still loving the series, but...

I love Jane and Beast, and this book was still very good, though not one of my favorites so far.
I'm annoyed that she's still working for Leo and wishing she would cut ties (at least for a while) and try to get her stuff together. Working for him has been toxic, and I don't believe someone of her character would continue to work for someone whose lies have put her, himself, and others in danger; who "offered her" to a man (she should have made him bleed for that) and treats her like property; who tortured a werewolf for information and kept it from her. It's a big contradiction that I'm hoping the author will resolve soon.
I was intrigued by the romantic possibilities initially of the three main men in her life, but now I'm feeling like none of them are going to be right. Hoping that the next book(s) will see her moving in a better direction personally and professionally.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not up to the quality of the others so far
Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2015

I've been enjoying the Yellowrock series and pretty compulsively reading it. But now I'm halfway through this book and I'm ready to throw it at the wall. I was a little annoyed in the last couple books by Jane's apparent low-self esteem and self-destructive streak-she always talks when she knows it will get her into trouble, constantly does things that should get her killed and would if she didn't have beast, gives away a LOT of money even though she is need of cash, keeps working for a boss who has personally tried to take her out at least 3 times...etc. Now she morphs from self-destructive to completely boundary-free, or narcissistic, or both. Everything is her fault. EVERYTHING. No matter whose actions started this whole ball rolling or how evil the actions of the other person/people involved....somehow it is all her fault. It gets old. FAST. Plus the romance thing is just crazy-making. Just pick one. Or two. Or four. Whatever. Have some fun already. We end with Rick riding up in the last book and the smell of big cat surrounding him. In this book we leap-frog into Asheville with nothing resolved and a lot of action that has apparently occurred offstage-maybe in a short story somewhere? Then we keep leap-frogging through the plot threads. I'll edit once I've completed the book-I'm stubborn and will keep going-but I had to vent some of this "crap" (Jane's new favorite word) out of my system because throwing Kindles across the room is an expensive habit. ***Edit*** Finished this book and the next two. My review for this one stands with some added frustration because Jane just wouldn't get the job done and seemed to be a muddled indecisive mess here. I'm happy to say Blood Trade fixes some of the issues and brings some clarity to Jane's emotional state in this book and in Death's Rival. It also sheds a lot of light on the plot arc. Death's Rival (next book after Raven Cursed) sheds some light on Jane's past and also has a bit more kick-a$$ action going on. Also, although Jane still seems oddly hampered at times she seems like she is becoming a little more politically savvy. Raven Cursed didn't do much to advance the plot IMO. Death's Rival introduces new characters and plot and Blood Trade is a direct continuation of the situations introduced in DR.
