4.0 out of 5 starsA book that'll break your heart and piece it back together while trying to tear it all at once.
Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2019
The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher is one of those books that no matter how many times you wanna hate it and wanna throw your kindle, you still turn it to the next page and grow more and more in love with the characters. It was an instant love I felt for this book. It took me through so much turmoil, yet filled my heart so full of love.

I've read this book twice now and let me tell you, the second time around was just as amazing as the first time. I was instantly drawn into the lives of these remarkable characters. I loved Olivia even though she was so flawed. Her flaws made her who she was and in the end, everything that happens helps her to grow into a better person, into someone she can be proud of and someone she can love. When Olivia and Caleb meet, it's a fun situation and I love the pull and chemistry they share through the whole book. Their love is the kind of love that comes along once in a lifetime and it just devours you whole. It's a deep kind of love that you'll feel all the way to the depths of your soul. I wanted them to work through everything and be together, but life has other plans. You will be blown away and by the last page, your heart will be a shattered mess. Mine still is and it makes me wanna read the whole series again.

If you love a book that will shock you, break your heart, piece it back together while trying to tear it at the same time, then you'll be hooked! I sure am.
I give The Opportunist by Tarryn Fisher 4 out of 5 I'll Always Love You STARS!

3.0 out of 5 starsA gritty and twisted romance
Reviewed in the United States on May 25, 2019
A lot of my fellow romance-lovers enjoy cute, fluffy romances that make them smile. Not me - I like my romance novels to make me feel like I've been sucker-punched in the solar plexus half a dozen times before throwing me out on my ass in the middle of a busy sidewalk. That's why I chose THE OPPORTUNIST as my "second chance romance"; when it comes to messed-up romance novels, Tarryn Fisher invariably delivers.

Our main couple, Olivia and Caleb, are epic trash people, and this is their saga of dumpster-worthy decisions. They first hooked up in college, but only after Olivia schemed, lied, and stalked her way into his heart, even going so far as to screw over his then-pregnant girlfriend by spilling out all of her dirty laundry. I saw a meme earlier that said "All Tea, All Shade" - that's Olivia. She's scandal wrapped in an ill-fitting dress. You can't quite hate her because her life is so awful, but you can't really stand to be around her, either.

It's told in dual timeline format, with the present story being written in present tense and the past story written in past tense, which can be a little confusing (especially since sometimes the author forgets which story she's telling, and slips into the wrong "tense"). This format is used to conceal information from the reader, because in the current story, Caleb, now with a different girlfriend, has amnesia, and Olivia, schemer that she is, takes advantage of his delicate condition in order to worm her way back into his heart a second time. We know that when they last parted, Caleb hated her for some unforgivable transgression, but we don't know what. All that we do know is that Olivia is one sick puppy... and as we read on, we find out Caleb is, as well. Maybe worse than we think.

The last third of the story gets extra weird and a little unbelievable, but I just decided to roll with it. MUD VEIN and MARROW did the same thing. Tarryn Fisher seems to be making "jumping the shark" her trademark, and somehow she makes it work, even if you secretly admit to yourself that what's happening is a little stupid. The "past" story was the embodiment of virtually every negative new adult stereotype that I hate, but somehow Fisher made that work, too. I think it works because she doesn't try to apologize for being over-the-top or writing trash people characters. She just writes them and lets them tell their story themselves, rather than wasting time trying to apologize for them. ATHEISTS WHO KNEEL AND PRAY also featured a cast of incredibly repulsive characters, but I liked that book more than I should have, because it was compelling and unapologetic.

This definitely feels more unpolished than MUD VEIN and MARROW (both of which I believe were published later), and I noticed more errors in THE OPPORTUNIST, as well. There is also a higher rate of awkward metaphors that sound like something you might expect to see in a high school creative writing class, some notable ones comparing a dude to a shiny pepper she wants to take a bite out of and mouths clashing together like thunderclouds. *eye roll* But if you can get over the negative tropes and the unlikable people and the OTT drama, this is actually a riveting read. I devoured it in just a few hours and was frankly amazed at how quickly those pages turned. I own the two sequels and am excited to see what dark and reeking twisted alleys this story takes next.

Spoilers within. Don't read this review if you don't want to know major plot twists or the ending.

This book is basically the same as Atheists Who Kneel and Pray also by Tarryn Fisher. The main character is very much the same; bitter, emotionally stunted and immature because of her lack of relationship with her mother and father. I get the psychology lesson Tarryn is asserting here - someone who was not loved as a child does not know how to love. But that doesn't make this character or her story enjoyable. It's frustrating to see her sabotage the most important relationship of her life. I started hating the main character, Olivia, halfway through the book because she was so hateful and selfish but stuck with it and read it through to the end. THIS IS NOT A HAPPILY EVER AFTER TALE. She does not get the guy. So it makes me mad that I had to suffer through all of her twisted thinking and actions only to find out she ruined her chances with the man she truly loved. I think the author or editor intends the reader to feel resolution in the end because in the epilogue we see that Olivia has learned to be a nicer person who no longer manipulates or plays games but at that point I'm not pulling for her anymore.

WARNING: If you like a romance book with a happy ending and white picket fence, this is not that book.

This book left me with so many emotions. OMG! I don't even know where to being, so let's begin with the characters. 1) Olivia: was a very complicated and complex character. She was such a unique and original person that it threw me off guard when I first started reading this book. She is not like your normal heroines; she isn't the heroine of this story at all: she's the villain. 2) Caleb: was perfectly imperfect. I adored these two characters, and this story showed me how desperate a person could get and what measures they will go to when they want something. Their love story is not an easy one to read. Like I said earlier, this story is not a story about a happy girl with good throughs who is looking for her happily ever after: THIS STORY IS ABOUT A VILLIAN. There were a lot of twists and turns in this book, but it was magnificently written. My recommendation: go into this book blind and with an open mind, and make sure to have tons of tissues on hand. DISCLAIMER: Some people might not like Olivia's negative thoughts, and this book might put some people in a sad and gloomily mood, so proceed with caution. If you want to read something uplifting and happy, I would steer clear of this book for now. This book is complicated and will tug at every possible emotion known to humanity. But I think the unique narrative, ending, and marvelous writing style should be given an opportunity.

** spoiler alert ** Although I feel emotionally spent, I can't say enough good things about this book. From the moment I started, which was yesterday, I couldn't put it down and stayed up until 3:00AM to finish it. The author showed that love can be ugly, obsessive, possessive, deceitful, secretive, and wrong...but it’s love and it’s crazy, which unfortunately can turn us into something we are not proud of. It is REAL life. I adored how the relationship between Olivia & Caleb got started, and how well the emotions flowed through the characters. At first Olivia gets under your skin. She's dark, hard and doesn't trust anyone, but the more you get to know her, you can’t help but like her, and you find yourself desperately rooting for her. I enjoyed how well the author played Olivia's past into their relationship. It was important to see how much her past and fears shrouded her life, which ultimately doomed the relationship. I felt this part of the book really shined. As for her love interest Caleb, I really fell for him. He was sexy, charming, & confident.

The plot line of the book was not what I expected. There were some major turns and twists that I didn't see coming, really taking me on that rollercoaster ride of emotions. There were so many obstacles their relationship faced. I felt the intensity of the love and the loss, as well as the desperation. The coincidence and fate of the story is chillingly raw.
Once you fall into their love story you want nothing more but to root for these characters to finally be with each other. I have to admit, by the end I was so disappointed in Caleb. He went from being strong and determined to someone I didn't recognize. He could have prevented the ultimate outcome during their “second chance around”. I am really hoping the sequels resolve this somehow.

My final thought is about the sequels. We didn't get the "traditional" HEA in this book and I would have been OK with that, had there not been sequels announced. The second book is going to be from Leah's POV which makes sense if she will eventually get out of the picture. The last book is speculated to be from Caleb's POV and that in my mind means we might get a nice red-ribbon-wrapped HEA that we all so hope for. But of course this is all just wishful thinking on my part to heal my bulldozed heart after finishing this book.

I rode this amazing journey into the discoveries that true love never ends and is always filled with ups and downs and much of the time confusion. Olivia Raspen and Caleb Drake are another pair of star crossed lovers in this exciting drama. This story is anything but typical and is also full of insight into the mystery that can shroud your behavior when you think you love someone unconditionally. These two grow into a mature realization about their unique bond that changes both of their lives permanently. The author has created two timeless characters that will captivate your thoughts and bring you both anxiety and satisfaction that all real love lasts forever between two people even if they do not seek to love only each other as permanent companions. Tarryn Fisher convinced me that love is real when you can place someone else’s happiness and well being before your own selfishness. Love is patient and kind, but it can be ruined by jealousy, pride, and dishonesty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words...

Every book is a compilation of words, words put in a certain order to tell a specific story.

The words in this story made me laugh, cry, scream, drown in a deep depression and relate.

Just honest to goodness relate to a character like I've never related before, I was stunned, just Absolutely stunned by pretty much everything in the book. In such a good way though, there were of course some imperfections, such as some overly used descriptions and things.

It's not a book for everyone, but if you've ever made some mistakes in life or you live a life a little darker than most people, you might also relate. Some things you read come at the right time in a moment you least expected, and that's why you love it more than you would under different circumstances. Some stories you read for your entertainment, for your mood, or just for the hell of it.

I feel like an idiot to gush so much over this story, but I love it, for everything it is and for everything it isn't, I love it for how it made me feel and the day I lost reading it.

This is the kid of story that makes me reevaluate my definition of 5 stars.

“The Opportunist” could well be the worst book I’ve ever “not" read. Purchased on the recommendation of a friend, I turned off my Kindle in disgust by the third chapter. Written with the emotional maturity and literary grace of a 6th grade girl, the staccato sentences are nearly all simplistic “subject-verb.” The juvenile, narcissistic, stunted characters make one wonder what the author's real-life friends must be like. Inane, insipid, trite and twisted, leave this book on the shelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars The story is a whirlwind of love, lust, lies, deception, kismet, manipulation, regret, obsession...

Why do I do this to myself? I know that reading another Tarryn Fisher book is just going to smash my heart into a thousand pieces. Yet, I just can't stop myself. I have no self control.*

Ms. Fisher has a way of writing about these complex, tumultuous relationships with so much desperation and emotion that it feels like I'm right in the thick of it. Every single character of hers is complex and realistic. The characters in The Opportunist are no exception. The story is a whirlwind of love, lust, lies, deception, kismet, manipulation, regret, obsession... everything that the real world has to offer. It is the perfect depiction of how imperfect, ugly, and unfair it can be to love and be human. But, there's also a lot of beauty in it.

Olivia Kaspen is one of the most complex and flawed characters I've ever met. She's bristly, has questionable morals, and is ridiculously tenacious. But, she's incredibly likable. I wanted to slap her and hug her all at once. Her counterpart, Caleb Drake, is the light to her darkness. They are the perfect fit, but sometimes things just don't workout exactly as we hope. There is an attraction and chemistry between them that comes alive and jumps off of the pages. Their love story is beautiful and tragic. I am very interested (and scared) to see where books #2 and #3 take them.

The plot bounces between Olivia and Caleb in the past and present. The narration is first person throughout and it is flawless. I'm usually picky about first person narration because characters tend to tell the story rather than show it. But, the execution in The Opportunist is perfect. The timeline does a fantastic job of building tension while telling a compelling story. There were moments when I couldn't turn the page fast enough! I absolutely became wrapped up in this story and needed to know what would happen.

* Without gushing too much about Tarryn's writing like a creepy fangirl ( again ), I'll just say that she has become one of my favorite authors and I adore her writing style. Just read her books, alright? Kthxbai!!!
