Still funny, enjoyable stories even after all these years

I have very fond memories of reading Frog and Toad when I was little. They were funny then and they're funny now, some thirty-odd years later. I have purchased three of the Frog and Toad books for my child and love reading them to him. All of the books I purchased were hard cover, but only two came with outer sleeves (which I honestly hate book sleeves anyways so I doubt I hang on to them).

There are several collections of stories so if you're trying to remember which one contained a favorite chapter/story of yours from childhood, here is a list of Frog and Toad collections with which chapters they contain:

This book, along with another by author Arnold Lobel "Frog and Toad Together," have become favorites of my daughter (just turned 3) and me. The book is written around two main characters, Frog and Toad, and their adventures together, and is also part of the "I Can Read" series of books. Below are main points based on hours of reading with daddy's girl:

* The tales are charming and relationship-based, so the child is exposed to issues of friendship through storytelling in a subtle way. The particulars of the story are thoughtfully presented and often humorous. That is not to say that this is exclusively a teaching tool; some tales lean more toward relationship issues, while others are simply entertaining, but all of them revolve around the connection between friends. I read to my daughter daily and often, and at this stage this book is just right with regard to length, complexity, and situations that are bound to tickle her brain.

* The illustrations are simple but attractive and follow events in the story. This is one of the first books I've read to my daughter that is weighted more toward the printed word than the illustrations. This also makes it vastly more interesting for this particular daddy, who may have been growing tired of simpler fare.

* This is the first book my daughter has gotten into that has independent chapters. Each chapter is sized just about right, about twelve pages or so, and is perfect for keeping my daughter's interest. It also makes for a nice bridge to 'bigger' books and allows me to point out that a longer story can be made up of more individual events and the imagery produced by the spoken word can begin to overtake printed illustrations.

* This particular book is a Caldecott Honor Book. I tend to seek out books that are unique, challenging, and rewarding to read, and it is nice to know that it also has been recognized by a respected organization.

The bottom line is this: out of the universe of children's books, this is one - at least from this daddy's perspective - that I don't mind reading over and over for days on end and which my daughter loves and asks for by name. For me, this also hits a sweet spot between fantasy and reality, values and entertainment, and challenging material that my daughter enjoys digesting. As with any media, toy, or developmental tool my child is exposed to, I am very choosy - as I am certain any parent is. It also comes down to personal preference, one's particular values, developmental stage, etc. For me, however, this book hit the mark at the right time and has helped transition from simpler tales full of pictures to more complex stuff.

My daughter grew up with Frog and Toad, and now her son is loving this duo too! Not all of the stories inside this book are great, but 3 out of 5 generally is pretty good! My 2-year old grandson loves listening to my favorite stories every day and knows every word! (He could fill in the blanks as I read when he was younger, and now he is attempting to read along with me!) Frog and Toad are two unforgettable characters!

Wonderful, educational entertainment on the road

This book on CD has been a wonderful, relaxing and educational way to entertain my daughter on our many long trips in the car. We really do as much as possible with her, while she's awake, to keep her from watching TV. I discovered early her love of books, especially on CD, and has since been very interested in expanding our CD library with books on CD, rather than just having music.

The stories on this CD are read in a quiet soothing voice with just as much "excitement" as a 4-6 yr old needs while in the car on a long boring trip. The characters are fun, real and interesting to learn about. Some stories touch on lifes' lessons while others are just cute.

I bought two of the these CDs, to add to her Usborne Books on CD collection and we only had to turn on the DVD player once, and then only after 7hrs on the road.

All of the Frog and Toad books are treasures. Little kids love having the stories read to them ("Please, just one more!"), and as soon as they're able to read they can enjoy them on their own. But don't stop reading to them, even if they can read on their own! The friendship between Frog and Toad is full of warmth and kindness and I think children can sense that and absorb it into their own relationships.
If you like The Wind in The Willows but need something in much simpler language for the little kids, check this out.

This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid! Frog and Toad are Friends is broken down into five short stories that are cute, funny, and very easy to read for a level 2 reader. With stories about friendship, Arnold Lobel takes us to a realistic forest setting with a hint of fantasy, where animals wear pants, have adorable little houses and talk to each other. Frog and Toad go on some simple adventures that portray the depth of friendship in the most effortless of ways. Within each story Frog and Toad are sometimes up and down, they may have miscommunications, and laugh at each other; but they are always there for one another in the end. The artwork is very charming and sweet which gives children an insight into their world and a message of the importance of good friendship and community. This book is perfect for the young readers or even nostalgic adults who need to put a smile on their face.

These books are great so get the whole set! Not only are they good easy readers to help get your kids to learn to read but they are REALLY FUNNY... not just on a child's level but as an ADULT I find the books hilarious. They are well written and I think just one of the best all time books you can get for a child.
