Good book and illustrates criminal mind. At times it seemed like it would never end. I do mot want to be negative about the author; he put a lot ofwork in it.

I only have a couple of criticisms, and they certainly aren't bad enough to keep a person from reading the book.

This author does not understand colloquial expressions and gets them wrong. For example, when describing someone who does not care, he writes, "He could care less". That's not what he's trying to say. If you could care less, that means you care. The correct expression is, "He couldn't care less". That means he cares so little that he couldn't care any less than he already does.
Another distraction is his conflating of words that creates compound words that do not exist in English. For example he writes "Away" when he means " A way". They have completely different meanings, and he does it several times in the book. I'm very surprised that his publisher's copy editors never caught these recurring problems.

That said, the way he weaves a story and introduces characters is excellent and he moves the story forward with finesse, keeping the reader engrossed and unable to put the book down until it's complete.

I will be reading more of his true crime!

"If Looks Could Kill" just might be THE best true crime book I have ever read, no joke!!! I can't say enough about this exceptional book. It has everything I love in a true crime book. The story is fascinating. The end of each chapter leaves the reader hanging so that you must read a little more, and a little more and before you know it the book has been finished.

There is NO FILLER! It is obvious that Mr. Phelps did a ton of research about this crime and the aftermath it created. It is very detailed (but not in a boring way!) and it takes the reader step by step through the investigation. It does not bore the reader with all the details of the trials but gives you just enough to let you know what happened and keep the reader interested.

Unlike most true crime books it is a real "who done it" that keeps the reader interest throughout. There are several pages of pictures at the end which was great in that it put a face with all those in the book. Some of the people involved were extremely vicious and cruel but they look like "normal" everyday people. Amazing!

As much as I have tried to write about this book in my review, it still seems inadequate. If I could give it more than five stars I certainly would! If you love true crime books, you just must read this one! It is awesome!! You won't be disappointed!!!

Excellent book! I couldn't put it down! Author did a great job telling the story. My only complaint is that the pictures at the end should have had their captions on the same page. It was confusing the way it was done. But, in spite of that small matter, the book is superb and well worth the time to read.
