4.0 out of 5 starsIt's an intriguing beginning to a series!
Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2012
Definitely not a recommended murder mystery for pregnant mothers, Tania Carver (the pseudonym of this British husband-and-wife writing duo) created a grisly thriller with plenty of twists and turns to the plot. The book frustrated me a bit in the beginning - I had to check (and doublecheck) that this was indeed the first book in the series. Many comments referred back to one previous case in particular, lending the feeling that this was the second book and not the first. But, both UK and American sites agreed that this is the first in the DI Philip Brennan/Marina Esposito series. So, I let the plot unfold and began to truly enjoy it.

The writers definitely aimed for that shock value with the extreme level of violence - so the weak-stomached may want to avoid this one - but the bloodshed was tempered somewhat by the relationship between the DI and the psychologist. And though their relationship took some predictable turns, the surprises in the murderous plot more than made up for that! And while the book wasn't flawless, and seemed to attempt to emulated Mo Hayder's earlier books, it was certainly gripping and with the multitude of brief chapters, quite fast-paced.

The next two books have already been released and I am looking forward to reading them based on their synopses. I am even more curious to see how these characters will grow and develop over the course of the series. It's an intriguing beginning to a series!

HALL OF FAMEVINE VOICE
3.0 out of 5 stars "We'll never truly know what makes a monster."
Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2011
"The Surrogate," by Tania Carver, is a creepy thriller set in Colchester, England, where a bloodthirsty and sadistic psychopath is mutilating and murdering pregnant women. Detective Inspector Philip Brennan, Chief Investigating Office of the Major Incident Squad, is horrified when he examines a particularly grisly crime scene. "The hallway looked like an abattoir," he notes with horror. "Covered in so much blood...." Prone to panic attacks, Brennan feels "his chest constrict, his arms shake," and he acts quickly to calm himself. The DI, along with Detective Sergeant Clayton Thompson, Detective Constable Anni Hepburn, and the rest of the team are all appalled at the viciousness of the attack.

The book operates on two tracks. Carver provides accounts of the killer's disordered thoughts, giving us clues concerning his state of mind and the demons that drive him. The author also delves into the personal and professional lives of Brennan, Thompson, Hepburn, and Marina Esposito, Brennan's former lover and a talented forensic psychologist who is asked to profile the killer. The author shows the detectives as troubled and flawed human beings. Particularly worrisome is the fact that one of Brennan's subordinates is hiding damaging information that could have serious consequences. Complicating matters even further, Brennan and Esposito have feelings for one another, but cannot act on them.

With two exceptions, the author portrays her male characters as corrupt, brutal, adulterous, selfish, or grossly insensitive. Anni and Marina represent their gender far more positively; they are courageous, independent, and intelligent. Carver ably demonstrates how a difficult investigation grinds down the detectives who must laboriously follow up every lead, no matter how tenuous. Unfortunately, red herrings sidetrack Brennan and his colleagues, and more people die before the cops finally figure out who is behind the carnage and why. Although she keeps us engaged and interested, Carver's writing is occasionally heavy-handed. In addition, at over four hundred pages, the novel would have benefited from judicious trimming. Be warned that "The Surrogate" might repel those who cannot stand stomach-churning violence, especially when helpless women and newborn infants are the victims.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Found This Book at the Library. Coincidence? ;-)
Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2011
I love few things in life more than a good ol' British detective and mystery story. Give me Ruth Rendell and Elizabeth George (especially her earlier books) any day. So, imagine how thrilled I was when I found a promising book at the library the other day. I colored myself excited with Magic Markers. (Yes, the librarians looked at me weird, but then they usually do.)

The book, "The Surrogate," by Tania Carver succeeded on many levels. I would buy her future books. But one pervasive issue keeps the book from being the best it can be. The "C" word-coincidences. Lots of them. And they keep coming, down the chute like obedient soldiers. Okay, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but when I was reading, I did not think so. It also seems like every other sentence is an incomplete sentence, missing a subject. This diminished somewhat in the second half. Also by the last twenty or thirty pages, I was mostly skimming. Some scenes had gotten repetitive (the killer does the same thing again and again at home).

The book also resorts to downright trickery for one character. I can't go into it deeply because then it would be a spoiler. Basically, it is a formatting issue (using italics instead of quotation marks to represent one character's dialogue to lead us to to think one thing until...) In any case, it IS trickery, plain and simple. And it was not necessary.

This book is not for everyone, especially if you cannot bear the thought of babies dying. Overall, though, this is a serviceable mystery that satisfied my British fix.

The Kindle version is more expensive than the paperback? It's a DIGITAL file that requires no physical manufacturing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok but please expand the vocabulary
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2013
I am a fan of mystery and British writers, but The Surrogate manages to only hit half the mark. The story is engaging enough, but Carver over-uses the word "mouthful" so often that I have a hard time focusing on the story itself. It's a tad formulaic and the protagonist is never a fully developed character so there is no sense of emotional investment. Halfway through the book I didn't care whether the main characters lived or died because they had no personality. The writing style is ok, but it's difficult for me to continue the series when I don't enjoy the characters and I spend most the time coming up with words I would rather read than "mouthful"

Although this was a book I hated to set down, I found its bit too gruesome for my liking. The story line was very distressing but I always find Carvers books to be really thrilling and that's what I loved about this one.
