4.0 out of 5 starsVery efficient, but basic, Study Bible

In the world of Study Bibles you can pretty much get exactly what you want. There are so many: Chronological, Apologetics, Bibles for fundamentalists, Bibles for teens, women, and men. Heck, my Father has one that is all about the role Faith played in the formation of the U.S.A. I have a few different ones in more formal translations, but missed my NLT Bible. I am not a huge fan of the popular Life Application Study Bible, so after some searching I found this from Tyndale. It is a very good Study Bible. It has all the basics- a concordance, maps, definitions, summaries of the background and authorship of each book, biographies of main characters, verse synopsis, and references to other related verses in the Bible. It is laid out in a common sense way and the font is decent. It has a ton of good information, and checks every box of a good Study Bible. I think it is a great Bible for those at the early to mid-point in their Walk with Christ. The NLT is a very casual "thought for thought" translation that lends itself to easy reading and the study notes are a PERFECT match for this purpose.

The reason I gave it 4 stars is that it may be too much of a "by the numbers" Study Bible for some people. As balanced as it is, it brings very little new to any discussion. If you are looking for a more in depth discussion of Theological ideas or if you are a Sunday School teacher this may not be right for you. I intend to use it as my everyday reading Bible, but when I want to investigate an idea more thoroughly I will use my other resources.

I am very enthusiastically recommending it, though. You will not find a better Study Bible for overall presentation.

1.0 out of 5 starsDecent content and presentation. Unfortunately, not without major problems...

I was specifically shopping for an NLT version of the Bible to read on my Kindle Paperwhite, not necessarily with commentary or study guides, though that's always appreciated. I previewed several before optioning to purchase THIS one. My main criteria?

A lot of eBook/Kindle Bibles seem to like to FORCE us to use JUSTIFIED text. In other words, the option to use ragged-right margins is UNAVAILABLE (greyed-out). To me, that is a deal-breaker. Justified text, to me, is just ugly and hard to look at, and I don't want to have to deal with it in a book I'll be diving into regularly for long periods of time.

UPDATE: As of June 2021, the above two paragraphs are WRONG. A couple of days ago, my Kindle would crash EVERY time I tried to open this eBook, along with a message recommending that I delete and re-download it.

Okay then... now it opens, doesn't crash as often, BUT all the text is force-justified exactly like what I *hate* in other (but not all) Bibles on Kindle.

Not only that, but some of the opening commentary before each Book of Scripture is now so butt-ugly that I find myself wondering, did anybody TEST this thing before pushing an update in the Amazon store? Because if they did, then it must be a marketing ploy to get people to not read Bibles on Kindle anymore. Yes it's THAT bad. See the screenshot.

Seriously, I'm abandoning Kindle as an effective Bible reading platform in favor of Bible-reading APPS for my Android tablet and phone. I'm going to miss that PaperWhite screen when reading outside though.

Again, as a review to potential buyers, and as a person who's favorite paraphrased translation IS the NLT, my recommendation is to avoid THIS like the plague.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Translation Presented Beautifully in this Bible

I absolutely love this translation and this particular edition of it. The translation is so clear and easy to read in modern English. It makes you feel like you're really understanding the Bible and its nuances for the first time.

For the King James Only people who are skeptical (or outright hostile) to all modern translations, I challenge you to find anything in this Bible that would indicate a bias towards twisting the Word of God. And I challenge you to find any place where there are any meaningful differences in meaning between this and the KJV. There are a few things that are different, but that would be owed to the fact this version was translated from older texts than were available to the King James translators.

To those who prefer modern versions, I find the NLT to be in the most pure and clear modern English. Even the NIV has passages that are rendered into somewhat archaic English. Same with the ESV and NASB which are a very solid translations, but too often their translations are rendered into English that's almost unintelligible to today's speakers.

As far as this specific edition, it is laid out beautifully. I've read the first five books of the Old Testament in this edition so far, while reading every single footnote and comment. It's a *very slow* way to read the Bible! But your understanding will be so much richer. The notes really add a lot of clarity to the text - especially in the Old Testament. There have been a few notes that I have disagreed with or was skeptical of - but that's to be expected as the footnotes aren't the Word of God. However, I haven't noticed in the cases where I've disagreed with the notes that the translators have made any attempt to mis-translate the actual Biblical text to fit into their footnoted views. If you compare their actual translations on the passages where you may be skeptical of their notes to the KJV or any reputable modern version, you won't find any difference in meaning between them.

Their notes aren't the same thing as a "commentary" - which is a good thing in my opinion. The notes mostly add contextual background which make understanding certain passages far easier... especially some of the Old Testament passages.

There are two parts to making a good Bible translation. First and foremost is accurately translating the original texts. But just as important - is translating it into the receiver language in a way that accurately conveys the original meaning of the original texts in the new language. If you translated the Bible literally word-for-word it would sound like nonsense in English. The NLT translators have done an excellent job in balancing the fine line between taking the original texts literally and accurately representing the literal meaning into English.

Solid beautiful book. Great value. Indian it’s the Bible, how much better can you get! The great thing about this particular version is the various international teams of scholars and clergy and have interpreted the passages and brought it into a modern understanding reading much of the original text. Bravo well done !

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for my Old Testament course.

I really like the study features of this edition. Serves as a great complement to my Old Testament lectures in college. Maps, notes--all that stuff is very helpful and expands my understanding of what we're covering in classes. And using this Kindle edition makes locating a reference almost instantaneous. No riffling thin pages, searching for one verse, while the professor has already moved on. For the first time ever I'm actually reading along, not flipping pages. (I've had the books of the Bible memorized in order since I was eight years old, but there are an awful lot of pages in a Bible, and it takes a little time to locate a passage, unless you've visited it so many times that the book just falls open there!)

A great version. I don't see using my old leather-bound much any more with this on my Kindle.

I have owned the hard copy version of this Bible for a couple of years but have not had the opportunity to read it as much as I thought I would. Aside from the fact it is a big and somewhat heavy book it wasn't something, for me, that I would just whip out and start reading. The content is something to comprehend, actually think about after reading the sentences, etc. The first thing I downloaded when I got my Kindle HD was this Bible. Now I can read it anywhere and it is easy to navigate the pages and move around as you prefer.
I can't imagine reading the Bible and not having the notes to refer to for explanations and further detailed information. The background on the major subjects, people and places adds so much to the enjoyment and comprehension of the meanings and events. The absence of those features alone is probably what keeps people from reading this wonderful book.

This is the first study Bible that I have ever owned and I like this translation. I've gotten to like the introductions, the side reference and the explanation notes that point you to other Scripture that make it easier to learn and understand what is being said.

I listen to K-Love radio and they use this translation for their Encouraging Word (Verse of the Day).

What I didn't know is that, while it uses modern English, it's latest revision was two weeks ago! I got it at the right time.

I love the lay flat design of the cover. Yes, it's imitation leather, it's soft and feels great in your hands. I just didn't realize how heavy this thing is but with 2,376 pages it's to be expected.

I have nothing bad to say about this study Bible and hope that it enriches my spiritual life in my walk with Christ. As Psalm 119:105 NLT says, "Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path." That's what I intend to do.

If you're serious about learning the Scriptures and what they mean, get this Study Bible, you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Among Many

I have numerous Bibles/Study Bibles, from several decades back, to now, in numerous translations/versions. The NLT is absolutely the best translation I have had the pleasure to study. The NLT Study Bible has become my favorite. The translation, introductions/overviews, notes, articles, outlines, timelines, etc., all contribute to understanding and application--that's what Bible study is all about--for spiritual growth. The NIV 2011 Study Bible and the ESV Study Bible are both excellent Study Bibles as well, just to mention my next favorites in order, but the contemporary wording/phrasing/sentence structure, etc., in the NLT is unsurpassed. I love the NLT, as well as the others, on my Kindle for PC and my Kindle Fire 8.9, on both of which I'm building a digital library--with the size type I want--that is mobile, without this guy having to be in his study room or having to tote heavy paper Bibles/books around. The Kindle Fire is faster for me, than chapter/verse searching in a paper-bound, at Church/Bible Class/anywhere.

I own 38 Bibles. This is my favorite. The NLT is a good translation, faithful to the text, and not afraid to use English phrases to translate complex Hebrew and Greek words more faithfully. Robust notes, long book introductions, and informative people bios, Biblical theme interludes throughout, and interesting and careful multi-page introductions to large sections of scripture.

I also love the added sideline bits--timelines and further reading prompts. This is a very thorough study Bible.

I have this Bible installed on my Kindle Fire. I am still learning all that it has to offer, but love it. My husband has a hard copy of this study Bible and we have found this e-book tracks right along with all the helps of the hard copy so I was very pleased. Because of the smaller screen of the Kindle Fire it can be somewhat difficult to navigate at times, but then I am still learning and it is well worth the effort.

This Study Bible is the best I have seen yet! Reading the Introduction & the Historical data is captivating and surprisingly easy to read. This book has a wealth of information but is presented in a way that doesn't overwhelm the reader. As you read, you can paint the image in your mind, the political climate, the historical significance of the OT & the NT. The Bible simply comes alive as if you are watching an amazing drama unfold.

If your Bible reading has gone stale, I recommend you buy this. This will open your mind to seeing the Bible as a wonderful book full of stories, adventures and exciting plots all interconnected! Reading this book, you will come away with a renewed understanding that the Bible is God's book. It is His Story, and because of that it is so much more precious.

Thank you to all who have labored on this book. This is a quality read that I and many others will treasure forever.
