Highlight the Whole Book

I knew John Wooden had been a mentor of leadership guru, John Maxwell, so I thought it was time to go to the source. Reading Wooden's book you can see what a major influence he had on Maxwell. There are no wasted words in this short and easy read, but the density of the wisdom is phenomenal. If you are reading the Kindle version and want to highlight the good parts, I suggest doing a Select All, then picking the highlight color of your choice. If you are reading a paper book you will need to buy a can of liquid highlighter and dip the whole book.

The book covers the landscape of Coach John Wooden's leadership philosophies and the Pyramid of Success in a format that, unfortunately, I didn't really care for. The content is very good - and Wooden's approach is time tested and comprehensive. The book is written in multiple parts, with reflective question and answer areas right in the book that makes this about 170 pages of content and 100 of blank spaces to take notes. This isn't bad - just be aware that this is a read and write book - not just 270 pages of text. The other piece that I wasn't ready for, and the reason for the loss of the star, was the tripartite structure of the chapters - a piece from Wooden, a piece from Jamison and a piece from a former player - for each principle. The flow wasn't great, and many of the player pieces were repeated later in the book.

All in all, the wisdom of the content outweighs the challenge of the format. Worth reading

Genius, is the first word that comes to my mind in recommending this book. If you're a leader or a coach this book is a must. If used it would fix what is so wrong on the sport industry today and would correct so much of the wrong thinking in leadership and business. These are the fundamentals, get these things right and you can hold your head high, and you will win more than you'll lose.

I read this book as part of preparation for a meeting and I am so glad I did. I had not read any other Coach Wooden books but now I plan to. So many useful lessons but the book is also entertaining and a quick read if you're interested in the topic. The layout of the book is a bit awkward but that is really my only complaint.

Coach Wooden is a winner in the book arena as well as he was in the basketball one. His book is filled with basic, common sense advice that applies to life as well as sport. You can pick it up and open it at any page and find sage advice that also motivates. The style is easy to read and conversational. Glad I bought it - as is my husband, who suggested it!
