The prologue for this series begins in 1881 in Chicago a mother is dying leaving three children, Hugh , Felicia & Diana Brennan and her death bed wish is for Hugh to take his sisters to Dr. Cray, who will send them out west for adoption into a loving family hopefully together, while removing them from their father, who is a drunk and criminal. Each book is the story of the individual children years later. These books can stand alone, but interest in learning of their lives warrants reading them all.
Book 2 is the story of Hugh Brennan. It is It is the year 1899 Hugh has left Chicago looking for his sisters. He learned the whereabouts of Felecia in eastern Wyoming only to discover she had gone to Boise, Idaho to teach. Heading west to Idaho, he stops at a ranch for water and hopes to work for a hot meal. A young widow, Mrs. Julia Grace is the owner. Both these characters have been betrayed and hurt by those closest to them and don't want to be hurt again, which means a lack of "trust" & life as a loner. Like his sister Felecia, Hugh is a kind Christian with a gentle spirit. He has a past, reaped the consequences and now God is directing his future. Julia is also a Christian, but she's determined to remain on her small ranch alone, with no plans of re-marrying . She is more strong willed and tends to be more negative, but she has been abused & isolated so much that she's accustomed to repetitive negative thoughts. The theme is about God's restoration and that is always inspiring to me. Though I really liked Hugh, I enjoyed Book 1 more, but it is good in its own way.
