As a Marriage and Family Therapist in the San Diego area and specializing in children, worry and anxiety is huge in our society. Author, Dawn Huebner has a wonderful way of helping children place their worries on the "back burner" until the fire finally dies out. Children worry about all kinds of things and focus on WHAT IF questions. What if there is no cream cheese for my bagel? What if I don't do well on a test? What if my parents are late to pick me up? All of these real worries are scary to children. After the child in the story went to see Dr. Green, who helped her with her worries, the child was also advised to pick a comfortable place to sit, where she could unload her worries for 15 or 20 minutes. As time went on, the worries seemed to become less and less because the focus was not on "what if" but rather "I can." As a therapist, I agree wholeheartedly with Dawn Huebner as I implement many of these similar type of tactics in my therapy sessions and they work. Parents, you are an important part of your child's life and remember a child's worries are real. They need to be listened to and comforted in order to help them empty their heavy pockets so that they can learn how to deal effectively with worry ad anxiety.
