Just finished reading The Unspoken and before starting my review I decided to read some of the reviews. All though I agree with people that an author should research a subject prior to writing it, I'm not sure I would focus totally on those errors. I do a lot of reading and frankly have noticed that in 95% of the books I've read (in different genres) that there are mistakes in them. BUT when I read these types of fictional stories, either being mystery, horror, paranormal, romance, I am just looking for an escape. Not focusing on errors so much, but searching for that story that will temporarily take me away from my daily problems. The Unspoken was one that did.

Now on to my review. Another great story by Heather Graham. All though usually her books can be read by themselves, it does help to read her previous books. Especially the last one, The Unholy, to understand the story better.

As usually this had everything I was looking for in a story to get lost in. Intrigue, suspense, romance, mystery, action, etc. I am so glad that Will wasn't overlooked and he got his own story. I wasn't sure at first if I would like the pairing of Will and Kat, but they were amazing together. Major chemistry between them. It worked out well.

The story in itself was intriguing, so many possible suspects. It had me guessing until the end. All in all, it was a great story, even with the mistakes. But to me that's what makes me a fan of hers. Her books have always been interesting, a great escape, that it's worth just reading for the story itself.

This is the second Heather Graham book I've read. The first being "The Unholy." I did like this one somewhat better than "The Unholy" simply because I liked the subject better, but all in all it didn't do that much for me. In thinking over why it occurs to me that what her writing lacks is suspense. She could be a script writer for a TV series or movie, but for a novel there just isn't that much to keep you reading. I have one more of her books to read because I bought a set of three, but after that I don't believe I will buy anymore books by this author.

Heather Graham's books have a paranormal twist and is why I read them. There's nothing extraordinary about them though. The story always lays out the same. A gifted person and an unbelieving investigator not liking one another yet forced to work together to solve a murder who in the end fall in bed, love and sometimes marriage. So these books are pretty much "if you've read one you've read them all". They're a pretty quick read and are fine for the beach or late night insomnia.

I usually love Heather Graham, but her writing is so inconsistent in quality. This book had a lot of melodrama paired with several unbelievable scenes -an FBI agent so incensed that he pulls a gun magazine out of a gun, breaks it over his knee, and throws the gun in a corner. Have you ever tried to break a magazine? You're an FBI agent-why would you have a hissy fit & disturb the crime scene like that? The characters just did not have any believability.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the story. But it felt like I'd read it before. The characters were not as compelling as some of her previous pairings (although I did like them), and the formula of their pairing seemed trite. Maybe because it's been done before - and by Heather Graham? All in all, it was enjoyable, but not her best story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slow Start, Satisfying end

Slow start to this story, but a satisfying story in the end. This story is a reasonable contribution to the Krewe mythology, but moves at a slower pace than we have come to expect. The supernatural elements were less central to the story than in other Harrison stories, which was a surprise. Fans of Graham and of Elizabeth Peters would like a little more history.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stilted writing

I like Heather Graham, but since she has been writing the "Krewe of Hunters" series her writing seems stilted. The dialog sounds phony. I found the motive for the murders of this particular Krewe book a little unbelievable.

Heather's books prior to the Krewe series were much better written.

I really like Heather Graham and want to like this book, but she left me behind almost immediately. The murder of a diver in Lake Michigan by drowning with salt water in the lungs is just wrong. Lake Michigan and all the Great Lakes are FRESH WATER, I should know I live in MIchigan. I am tired of writers not bothering to research more than looking up a few facts on Google and running with it. Errors like that ruin stories for me because I then spend the rest of the book nit picking rather than enjoying the plot. A simple re-read by someone with just a little bit of knowledge would have prevented this.

VINE VOICE
3.0 out of 5 stars A fun read with some weak spots
Reviewed in the United States on August 16, 2012
If you've read my previous reviews for some of the books in this series, you'll know that I've been rather disappointed overall by the KoH series. Most of them seemed to more fizzle than anything else, but I'm glad to say that this book is a marked improvement over the last few books in this series. It's not an overwhelmingly great "Graham's back" type of book, but it's enough to where I can definitely recommend it to Graham fans.

I really believe that part of what makes the book work is that our pairing in this book are two members from the separate Krewe teams. They've had their characters slowly built up in the previous books and because of that, they're more developed than some of the other love interests and you can get more invested in their characters and their romance. The mystery isn't bad either. It's not going to stump Sherlock Holmes anytime soon, but it's enough to keep me reading and the whole "investigating a shipwreck" part was entertaining.

My biggest gripe would've been that Kat and Will's romance goes a little fast at times. One moment they're ready to tear each other's heads off and the next they're totally into each other and friendly enough to where they can leave the door open between their rooms. The interaction between them was so nice that I didn't overly mind, but I'd have liked to see a bit more of the thawing of the ice between them. Their animosity/irritation for one another was so strong at first (without being outright hate) that it just seemed a little to sudden. The whodunit could've been a little better done, but it made sense for the most part and was entertaining, so I can't really get too angry about that.

Overall though, this was a very fun read and one of the better entries in the KoH series so far. There's a very good dollop of adventure here, which will make this a fantastic beach read. I didn't have to struggle as much through this as I did with some of the earlier books in the series and towards the end I couldn't help but want to keep reading. It's still not Graham's best work, but it's one that fans will want to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmmm, lungs filled with salt water in a fresh water drowning?????
Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2014
I kept hoping it was not another of the publisher or editor's lack of proof reading skills. I think Harlequin needs to be in less of a hurry to publish books and be more diligent with proof reading. I am hooked on Heather's books and have read a number of them and find in each one where proof readers, if there are any, have missed things. I grew up in Chicago so an ME stating someone had salt water in their lungs when drowning in a fresh water lake jumped out at me. I was really hoping that it was a plot twist but the fact that none of the characters caught it just showed poor editing skills. There really was not much about Chicago in the book either which is no surprise but I was hoping for more. With the Field Museum there and its collection of mummies I would have hoped that there was more about the magnificent history of such museums. Maybe even something about one of the characters having broken in to it and stealing some of the ancient mummy wrappings to plant at the various scenes. I love reading Heather's books and will continue to do so. Once I start one I can't put it down so I obviously like them. I like the ghost story aspect and the love stories too. Being a gay man I do find the love scenes extremely tame and quite vanilla flavored. It is clear that Heather has a specific type of man she likes, hairless. Where are the beefy muscular men with hair on their chest and the women who love them!!! Or, heaven forbid, a love story between two of the leading men! GASP, SHOCK, OH THE HORROR OF IT!!!!!
