5.0 out of 5 starsInspector Rutledge Is a Methodical Detective
Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2019
If you are looking for a fast paced, edge of your seat kind of action, you might want to steer clear of the Inspector Rutledge series. I really enjoy them because I like his character and because I believe that the pace of the mystery reflects a serious desire to solve the mystery and see the problem through. I highly recommend reading them in order because your knowledge of his background is an important element of his approach to a problem. I also like the time period that is reflected in the setting: post World War I and this experience plays a major role in his character and I believe in his approach to his position at Scotland Yard. He is frequently at odds with his supervising officer, but he continue to build his cases carefully and completely. If you decide to take the plunge, happy reading!

I was re reading this book and was puzzled by the ending or lack thereof. After reviewing the reviews I see I am not alone. I was going to research the last few chapters but no need. 2.0 out of 5 stars No resolution or ending. Disappointing.

This book was not nearly as well written as previous books in the series. I have loved these books and the characters. This book makes no sense. It seemed to have been written by a totally different author. And what happened to the ending?
Was this book written by a Todd nephew? The plotting is all over the place. The legal issues make no sense. And the ending fails to resolve a central part of the plot. Did they run out of paper or time?
Did the editor/publisher neglect to tell the author(s) that they had not written the ending? I do not care how long a book is. I care if it isn’t complete.

1.0 out of 5 stars No complete ending to this book

I have been enjoying the Ian Rutledge series to some extent (Americans writing British mysteries are generally lacking in authenticity with few exceptions). Without repeating what others have commented, my reason for giving this a one star rating is because of the ending - or lack of an ending which has never occurred in this series before. I felt as if some pages were missing. Throughout this book one particular character is missing & thought dead (murdered). Another character is thought to have hid the fact that her husband is dead & buried in the garden. None of these issues were cleared up. Did the authors fail to send the complete manuscript to their publisher? Did one of the editors screw up royally? A huge disappointment.

2.0 out of 5 stars Unresolved ending and weak ebidence

So what happened to Lewis French? A very prominent character in the book, his whereabouts were not confirmed at the conclusion of the book. Now, I have noticed in previous books in this series a couple of loose ends as well but could live with it. In this book, it seems a glaring error. I really liked the complexity of the book and had been looking forward to a resolution of the mystery but instead only one of the missing main characters was found. I also agree with another reviewer that the arrest of Gooding, the Chief Clerk, and his granddaughter seemed baseless, the only clue being that her handkerchief was found in Lewis French's motor car.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Seller but book is also good!

I bought this book used..super impressed by the seller's description since it actually matched the quality of the book. So often used books are rated arbitrarily and while technically may be close to the description they leave alot to be desired.

I love the Ian Rutledge series and as my library had let the subscription for this book lapse, I bought a used copy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Keeps Getting Better

This is the most complex Inspector Rutledge mystery to date. The plot has so many twists and turns I could not put it down. Others have described what makes Charles Todd's books so readable, so I will not address that. I will answer the question that has been raised in many three-star or less reviews about how the books seem to end abruptly. Some authors tie up every Lou send for their readers. Charles Todd gives you the answers to every plot point but not sent out Bulkley in a paragraph necessarily. The reader must gather the information much the way Rutledge does, one piece at a time. Since there is no one but Hamish to discuss the case with and Hamish has been on hand throughout the investigation there really is no way for the authors to restate all of the conclusions without being obvious. The answers are all there for the discerning reader and helps keep them on their toes. It is, I have found, yet another reason to immensely enjoy this fine series.

3.0 out of 5 stars I think the son of the writing duo took over

This book is written with a different voice. I preferred the earlier voice - it was less clinical and much more human and attractive. the change was quite noticeable almost immediately. I strongly suspect that the mother of the writing team Charles Todd wrote the balance of the other novels. She most definitely should write the rest. I do not like the new voice Some of the richness of this character and his rich emotional and psychological life has been lost.

In addition, I have been waiting with bated breath to see if Ian Rutlege becomes involved with his lady friend. Most annoyingly, as a quick aside, we are told that her husband, who is badly injured, has been discovered, and she is off to see him and that is the end of their relationship. I was not impressed at all with this story line development. The rest of the story is OK. It is certainly not the best in the series, and I was a little disappointed in the story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Boring

Ho-hum. This one was boring. We do not even get a little relief with Bowles' temporary absence. His replacement seems as eager and satisfied to railroad innocent people instead of working to find the real culprit. Why are all of Rutledge's superiors so similar? And how did such lazy and incompetent men rise to a position of power?

I'm happy Frances found someone, but disappointed she'll be even less a part of the series since it sounds like she will no longer reside in London. And no Meredith Channing means we are reverting back to the tired theme of Rutledge falling for a woman who rejects him in the end.

And Rutledge's psychological problems seem to be getting worse, not better. One of my least favorite books in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another wonderful Charles Todd book

I really enjoy this series. I learn so much about the time period and realize how much has changed in attitudes since then.
This book had me guessing until the end. I had mistakenly identified the killer several times before finding out I was all wrong. If you like mysteries that aren't obvious from the beginning, you'll love this series. I highly recommend it. Also recommend the other Charles Todd series about Bess Crawford that takes place in the same time period and gives an even better sense of WWI.
