Wrong definition of Racism!!
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2015
I LOVE this series, but was so very disappointed with this book. As another reviewer has mentioned - the definition of racism is seriously wrong.
On page 2 of the book, it states, "Racism in America is the belief among some white people that they are better than black people. Smarter, too. It is the belief that black people do not deserve the same rights that white people have."
This definition is inaccurate, ALL races (even in America) are capable of racism - racism is the judging of others (good or bad) based only on the color of their skin.
Another reviewer also mentioned the drawing of a lynched man - it is there and if you have sensitive kids or are reading to a much younger child and want to wait on some of the awful details of history, keep it in mind.
With those exceptions - I still found the book full of information to share with my children - this series is great for kids!
If I had one other complaint - it is that the book tried to cover too much in one book - it discussed Rosa Parks, Philip Randolph, Brown vs Board of Education, Martin Luther King Jr., Ghandi, JFK, and many more - each of which could have had it's own book (and some of them do have their own book in the series).
Just to note: Merriam Webster's definition of racism is,
":poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race
: the belief that some races of people are better than others"
