5.0 out of 5 starsI'm a huge fan!

With each book I read in the series starring Commissario Brunetti, I become more and more enamored of the entire Brunetti coterie -- the family, his colleagues, and (of course) Venice itself. The way Leon creates a sense of space, of place, is remarkable. I came late to this author and cannot recommend her more highly. If you, too, are discovering Brunetti, I advise beginning at the beginning, with Death at La Fenice, in order to get the most pleasure out of the series. Don't misunderstand, each book can stand alone, but the most pleasure can be gained by reading them in order.

Commissario Brunetti is a man without faith or religion in the service of a corrupt government and criminal justice system. He contents himself with small victories, willing to ignore the rest. As such, he and his small mysteries are rather boring. Of course if he fought the system he would soon be dismissed or worse and there could not be a series of police detective novels. And without faith or religion on what basis could he fight the system anyway? Having worked under somewhat similar circumstances, I do not see how he continues without a belief in an ultimate right and wrong. He also seems naive. Constantly surprised by revelations of corruption such as seafood from polluted waters being sold to the public. My real life law enforcement experience was surprise when I didn't find corruption.

This was my first Brunetti book. There will not be another unless one is offered free or at a substantial discount. I am certainly not willing to pay $6 or more for another volume in this series.

Donna Leon is truly reaching her stride as an author as a creator of characters and the problems they must cope with. The book covers the gamut from the relatons between men and women and the dysfunctional nature of governments. Its opening challenge is the murder of a father and son in their boat in the Venetian out island of Pelistrina. Its closing challenge is a major storm that hits that island. In the process Brunetti’s friends and cowokers face life altering events.
Certainly I feel I know Brunetti better now by far.
Curiously I am about to start a book by Don DeLillo that also takes place in Pelistrina.

Although I am not reading the Brunetti series in order because I wait for each volume to go on reduced price, I found this installment to be the best I have read so far. The character development as well as the plot are superb. In this case, Guido is called out to an outer island where two fishermen have been murdered and their boat blown up and sunk. Guido enlists the participation of Signorina Elletra in solving the mystery and finds himself trying to unravel his feelings for her. I look forward to the next book to reveal the effect. I highly recommend this entire series. Donna Leon is a highly skilled author.

I have become a fan of Donna Leon’s Conmmissario Brunetti series and A Sea of Troubles didn’t disappoint me in any sense of the word. I find Leon’s writing intelligent, her storylines imaginative yet plausible, her characters multi dimensional and interesting, and her locations vivid and intriguing. I’m looking forward to her next book and hoping that it ties up a few of the loose ends about one of my favorite characters, Elettra Zorzi.

When two murdered bodies are raised from the sea, Commissario Brunetti's investigation into the murders becomes a complex mix of half truths to down right refusal by the towns people to tell the police anything. When a third murder occurred events become even more urgent and deadly. It all accumulates it a mighty storm with a tragic outcome.

I have very much enjoyed the Donna Leon series featuring Commissario Brunetti. I find her writing to be intelligent. The detective plods along, much like the real world instead of sudden miraculous revelations and discoveries. I have liked all of the stories. The continuing characters of family and coworkers add to the enjoyment. I will be sad to come to the end of the series.

I marvel at how Donna Left n finds new parts of Venice to bring into her novels. This time it's Pellestrina, a fishing island near the mainland. Human relationships form the basis of this volume - fishing communities and their loyalty to each other, loyalty and even love for people in Brunetti's circle.
