Wow! With all the politics of today, it is interesting to find a diplomat who stuck to his mind and came out a winner in history-- Dodd chose not to attend the Nazi Nuremberg Party Convention in the 1930's, even though others from the State Department encouraged him to attend and his British and French counterparts did. Now we know in retrospect that he made the right decision. Hard to believe that a UVA professor of History became the U.S. Ambassador to Germany during the pivotal period of the 1930's. Intriguing and embarrassing to know that his daughter was having affairs both with a senior Gestapo agent and a military attache at the Russian embassy during the same period. It is well worth reading history about our diplomatic relations with Germany during the Nazi period of incumbency.
