We jump right into the middle of this story with Griffin and Kate because they meet right away and already have a long-ago shared history. Every story set in Sunshine, Idaho is interconnected but they release so slowly that I never remember who's who right when I start the book. The last book, Rescue My Heart, is about Adam and Holly. Griffin is Holly's brother and Kate is Holly's best friend. They've known each other for ages but they're being thrown together now for Holly and Adam's wedding.

Kate is a caretaker for everyone. She's a school teacher, surrogate mother to her siblings, housekeeper to her father. She even takes care of her ex-boyfriend/best male friend. I honestly had no idea where she found the time for all these things, but that's pretty typical of Jill Shalvis characters – they're so busy, they must not sleep or something.

Kate doesn't really take care of herself; the best she can manage is an occasional run or something to work off all the ice cream she eats. She's been offered a full scholarship for a master's program, but she can't convince herself to accept it when she's so “needed” where she is. She's so very scared of losing her place in life. She shows she cares by doing for people and what will happen to her heart if she's not there to take care of everyone. It ends up being rather unhealthy, the way Kate enables everyone to depend on her. I got really frustrated sometimes with her family, not just for relying on her, but really they used her and dumped a lot of grief on her too. Ok, so it was mostly her teenage sister, but sometimes I really wanted to smack her and I got irritated that no one did.

Between Holly and Kate's ex (Ryan), she had some nice caring friends. They don't take advantage of her, but they do let her express her love by taking care of them. I loved that Kate was able to have a good male friend without any added weirdness from Griffin or others. It was really nice to see that kind of confidence and security between all the characters that no one started looking sideways at them because they were friends.

Holly warns Griffin to stay away from Kate because (obviously) he's a love-'em-and-leave-'em type. But especially with a little wedding related alcohol in her system, Kate really wants Griffin even if it's only for a night. It's something Kate's started convincing herself that she should do just because she wants it. Some way of taking care of herself, fulfilling her needs, taking some part of life by the horns and not letting opportunity pass her by.

Griffin is trying to find a place where he belongs after being injured in the military. He ran as fast as he could from Sunshine, Idaho as a teenager, but now thinks that maybe he could belong there. He's hurting inside and out and Kate is a great panacea for his pain. She adds him to her list of people she cares for and tries everything she can to help him. Griffin seems like the first person that actually tries to give something back to her. I loved that about him. He let her express her own caring, but also turned it around on her and took care of her too. Even when they're not sure where things are going between them, they both reflect affection very clearly.

Most of the time, I thought that Griffin and Kate were really alike. They were both so good at taking care of people and effortlessly showed people they cared. They also didn't get upset when the other person was caring for them. No hurt feeling or saying “don't baby me” and stuff. It was like they really understood each other.

I found it so amusing that Griffin ends up second guessing himself and being the insecure one. Kate seems totally ok with her decisions in regards to Griffin, but Griffin always seems confused. Kate's too busy with life to let herself wait around and pine for a guy, but Griffin's always wondering if she's upset about something. It was a nice switch to have the guy be a little insecure instead of putting that onto the female character.

They did have their times of messing up, which were frustrating and upsetting to see. In trying to deal with his pain, Griffin ends up being a bit nasty towards the end, but they were able to work things out eventually.

I usually have a couple good laughs from these books, but I think this one was more of a smile with a couple surprising tearful moments too. The caring in this book was so well written that you really felt for these characters. It was another good comfort read. Definitely nicest if you have a long afternoon to just sit and read all day, but still good when you only have small snatches of time.

3.0 out of 5 starsUnnecessary complications
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 1, 2014
I couldn't wait to go back to Sunshine, Idaho. I loved the first three books in the series and couldn't wait to see Holly's brother and best friend get their happy endings. But now that I've finished it I'm disappointed I didn't love it as much as I thought I would.

It had a great beginning and middle. It had a good rhythm and I smiled and laughed in some parts. The thing is...

I felt many things happened in the last pages and they all wrapped up so fast in a way that left me feeling I read an incomplete book. Yeah, the main couple got their HEA but for me it felt kinda… meh.

I was expecting so much more and I would have definitely finished the book way before. I felt the things that happened in the end were unnecessary and a way to add drama to a story that didn't need it.

I'm all for complicated stories but this was a simple story that didn't need complications to make it better, it just make it feel dull.

Still…

It's always a pleasure to read a Jill Shalvis book and visit old favorite characters and even though it wasn't an amazing reading for me, it was not bad either. Though I would recommend the first three books in the series over this

5.0 out of 5 stars A rating....

My Review:
Jill Shalvis has it. I don't know exactly what "it" is, but her books and the emotions of her characters are simply perfection. I love and adore the way that she writes. I am constantly giggling, but that's not the only emotion that her books manage to tug out of me. They are so heartfelt and real, but OMG...maintain that gorgeous level of smexy that makes everything just so fun.

This book features, Griff, a wounded alpha soldier trying to find his place now that the military is no longer an option for him. You all know I love a hot soldier story and Griff is right up there with EVERYTHING I love in a hero. He's the strong silent type until he gets around Kate. She manages to get under his skin every time and he doesn't know what to do about it. Griff is not a guy who does helpless well, but that's how Kate makes him feel...because she makes him feel and it's a gorgeous thing to read. I love it when a hot alpha is brought to his knees by the perfect woman. Romance absolutely at its best.

Then there's Kate. She's a second grade teacher and fits every idea behind that. She's sweet and open and honest and....OMG, one of the toughest heroines I've read in a while. She's awesome. At her heart, she's a caregiver...taking care of her family, her friends, her ex-boyfriend, the kids in her class, and Griffin in those moments when he'll let her. Luckily, she's pretty sneaky and manages to do that a lot of the time without him even realizing until it's too late.

There was just so much about this book that I loved:
*first and foremost...Griff and Kate...really incredible characters that are so easy to fall in love with. Jill Shalvis crafted their back-stories to perfection and I loved everything about both of them....so much!!
*Kate and the way that she takes care of everyone. Her relationship with her ex, Ryan...LOVED them together. They are nothing more than really good friends now, but they were so fun together, so honest. I'm pretty sure Ryan will get a story soon and I'm THRILLED about that because I loved him too.
*Dustin (one of Kate's harder students) and Tommy (Kate's little brother as well as her student too). I loved the way Tommy was a miniature version of Kate and how socially awkward that made him, but he's a kid secure in who he is and still willing to give so much...even to Dustin who's so awful to him throughout most the book. Like Kate, Tommy is a giver.
*Griff and his dad....this part of the story was so good and so emotional simply because Griff is trying to do better and wants to belong so badly. Those scenes between them were full of angst and it almost hurt to read them, but they just made me love Griff even more.

This is a FABULOUS book. Definitely entertaining. Completely romantic. Jill Shalvis did it again and proved once again why she's on my auto-buy list. I NEVER read cover copy for her books anymore. I just automatically know that if I buy one of her books, I won't regret it. LOVE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great romance, lots of steam, easy to read. Hit the spot!

Kate is a teacher in an elementary school. She works herself ragged by helping to take care of her father, sister and brother. Her father was addicted to pain killers and is now one year sober. Her little sister is pushing all boundaries with brassiness, dressing provocatively and attempting to win an academy award for best drama queen. Kate's little brother is quirky, gets bullied and only wears super hero clothing. She hasn't had a date in forever, and is putting her own life on hold to help her family (whom she believes will completely fall apart without her).

Griffin is an injured war vet who has returned home to his family's ranch to be in town for his sister's wedding. His sister is Kate's best friend. Griffin and Kate have known each other since they were little. And Kate has had a crush on Griffin since she was little.
With Griffin's rough relationship with his dad, his head injury and a bit of PTSD, he is not open to a relationship with Kate, even though their chemistry is off the charts.

What was fun about this book?
- Kate is awesome. She is beautiful, smart, hardworking, incredibly kind and loyal, sweet, tenacious and wonderful with people.
- Griffin is sexy, loyal, willing to change his life for the better.
- The little brother, Tommy. He's a fourth grader who is incredibly smart, quirky and perceptive. Love this kid. Wanted to adopt him.
- Humor. This book has some really funny scenes. I found myself laughing out loud at various parts of the book. specifically with Griffin and his best friend.
- Hot steamy scenes. wow. Didn't expect that.
- HEA
- No cliffhanger.
- No insane angst nor misunderstandings between the characters.
- Story is easy to follow. Plows along at an easy even pace. Predictable, but that's okay. this is a nice light romance with a bit of teeth to it because the characters are not fluffy and there is great dialogue.
- The dialogue is great. Love books with lots of dialogue because you get to experience everything WITH the characters.

What was not so great?
- Griffin was so hot and cold. He kept turning Kate down. Felt so bummed for her. Understood why, but felt really badly for her
- Sometimes Kate threw herself at Griffin too much. Felt a bit embarrassed for her. Where was her pride?
- The big 'thing' that shows itself at the end. It was an interesting plot twist, but thought it resolved itself a bit too quickly and easily. Would have liked to see that play out a little more. Or just get rid of it completely.
- It seems like every Jill Shalvis book (towards the end of the book) has one of the main characters ditching the other one. Running away. Fleeing. Giving up. Goodbye. Then a quick reconciliation. I really do not like that. If things get bad, do not run away. Don't give up. Don't leave. you know that they will get together in the end, but it's still annoying when it happens in her books.

Overall, this was one of my favorite Jill Shalvis' books because it was funny, had engaging dialogue, the characters were more interesting and the storyline was engaging.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Break From Lucky Harbor
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on February 25, 2014
Verified Purchase
I really like Jill Shalvis's smart, breezy, funny contemporaries, but I'm at the end of my patience with the twee cuteness of Lucky Harbor, the fictional small town in the Pacific Northwest where most of her books are set. Rumor Has It is set in the only slightly less twee mountain town of Sunshine, Idaho, but it's enough of a change that that I could enjoy this book as I have not enjoyed the last few Lucky Harbor books.

Kate is a second grade teacher who takes care of everyone: her students, her friends, her ex-boyfriend-slash-boss, her recovering pill addict father and her two much-younger siblings. She's won a scholarship to attend a graduate degree program in science in California, but she doesn't dare accept because so many people count on her.

Griffin is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan (V is for Veteran in Sock Poppet's A to Z 2014 Reading Challenge), recently discharged from the military on medical disability after an IED explosion nearly took off his head. He now gets debilitating headaches and suffers from nightmares and ringing in the ears. He's come back to Sunshine for his sister's wedding, but he has no intention of staying: he's never gotten along with his father, and he has job offers waiting for him on the East Coast.

Kate effortlessly absorbs Griffin into the circle of people she takes care of, coming across him in the throes of a migraine and soothing his pain. For all she looks after others, though, Kate isn't selfless: she decides she wants Griffin in her bed, and she pursues him despite his gentlemanly reservations. She knows he doesn't intend to stay in town, but she doesn't care: she's not expecting anything long-term.

To his immense surprise and discomfort, Griffin finds himself falling for Kate and, more shocking yet, he finds contentment helping out at the family ranch. Suddenly, Sunshine seems less confining than it was when he was a rebellious kid, and the job offers back east seem less inviting.

And yet just when it seems everything will work out for a happy-ever-after, Griffin discovers a family secret that throws him for a loop. He shuts out Kate and everyone else, and is about to move East when something else happens to upset his plans again. If this sounds kind of chaotic, it is: there are a lot of plot twists in the last quarter of the book, which makes the end feel hurried and disorganized, unfortunately. Even with the messy plot detours at the end, though, my overall reading experience was positive: Kate is smart and funny and not at all a doormat, though she often puts the needs of others above her own; Griffin is emotionally reserved but not immature or damaged; and together they bring out the best qualities in one another, which gives me faith in the staying power of their romance. And, as usual, Shalvis's dialogue is quick and snarky and sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, which goes a long way toward making the read entertaining even where the story leaves something to be desired.

Griffin is home from Afghanistan for his sister Holly's(Rescue My Heart) wedding. Turns out, he is home permanently on a medical discharge. Kate, Holly's best friend, has had a crush on Grif since she was 10. And you know what weddings lead to...yeah. But instead of getting the chemistry out of their system, the fire just keeps getting hotter.

What worked for me - Grif. He is reeling from his injury, still struggling with PTSD and migraines, with his way of life, the military, yanked out from under him. He comes home to Sunshine, a place he couldn't wait to ditch as soon as he could enlist. Grif feels restless, out of sorts, 2 steps off the pace, and my heart just went out to him. He has a tense relationship with his father, and he wants so much to belong, but isn't sure how to get there. Kate grounds him, soothes him, and makes him feel things he thinks he has no business feeling. He's kind of gruff, but he has a heart of gold. The way Grif treated Tommy, Kate's little brother, just stole my heart. Grif wants Kate so much, though he is convinced he will hurt her.

Kate - Loved Kate. She is a 2nd grade teacher who spouts off science trivia when she is nervous. Oh, she cracked me up. She takes care of everyone in her life except herself. Kate has a great opportunity to study for her Master's, all expenses paid, but she is reluctant to leave Sunshine. Or so she says. Griffin calls her on it, making her admit maybe she is a little afraid of taking a chance. Kate is funny, and brave with her heart, putting herself all in on her one chance with Griffin, even though she knows it likely won't end well for her. I admired her so much. She has dignity and grace, and once she made her choices, she didn't back down.

Great secondary characters. Like every Jill Shalvis novel, the town folk become part of the story. Loved Ryan, and Kate's family.

There is a great lesson here. Several lessons, really. Family is what you make it. Home is where your heart is, or where the person who holds your heart is. Take a chance, because we only get one shot at this thing called life. And as Tommy would tell us, never leave a man behind.

What didn't work - Not one thing.

Bottom line - Another terrific read from Ms. Shalvis. She is one of my go-to, I-know-I-am-gonna-love-this, writers. I inhaled Rumor Has It in one sitting. Time and money extremely well spent.

Rumor Has it............ Jill Shalvis

Being a huge Jill Shalvis fan, and my favorite of her series being Animal Magnetism, I was so excited to read this novel. It was everything I hoped for and more.

Kate Evans is an amazing woman. She is a second grade teacher in Sunshine Idaho, acts like a mother to her two siblings, and even takes care of her Dad. Most amazing of all, she is best friends with her former boyfriend Ryan and rides with him to school everyday. Ryan is the principal at the elementary school . Kate likes to do everything for everybody, but doesn't seem to have time for herself. Right now she is trying to hold it together for the wedding of her other best friend Holly. Holly is marrying Adam ( Rescue My Heart) and it's a perfect match.
Kate is carrying a very important piece of paper in her purse. It's a scholarship to a graduate program for science education at San Diego University. She has received this prestigious scholarship for three years, and turned it down twice. This is the last year it will be offered , and she is still afraid to go. How would the family survive without her help?

Griffin Reid was the bad boy in town, and immediately joined the Navy after graduating from high school. Griff does not have a very good relationship with his Dad, even in childhood. He can't seem to do anything to please him. Griff is now medically discharged from the SEAL's after being injured from an IED. He has traumatic brain injury, and between that and his sister Holly's wedding he decided to stay in Sunshine for a while. If, he and his father can keep from biting each other's head off.

This novel has familiar faces from previous Animal Magnetism stories, and as always the laughter and love. Kate is a beautiful, smart, and very capable woman who spouts science facts when she's nervous. Griff makes her very nervous. Griff is in town, just for a short while, trying to decide what to do next. He knows he should stay away from Kate, she totally gets under his skin, but she has dug in very deep, and he can't let go. The secondary characters, as always add to the laughter. If your looking for a small town romance, with laughs and sizzling scenes...........Rumor Has It is a sure thing.

I received this ARC from NetGalley for an honest review.

Jill Shalvis certainly has a knack for writing tough hot guys with a military background. She has such as way of making her men very tough, yet there is a little bit of each of them that has a physical weakness. In Rumor Has It, Grif's particular weakness is that he was injured in combat (or whatever you would call it) and was sent home. He has debilitating headaches after being almost blown up by an IED. I really love how with each guy their 'issue' is something that affects them, but it isn't really the main part of the story. Just a small part that makes him who he is.
OK, so we have Kate, the sweet and innocent 2nd grade teacher, BFF's with Holly, from Rescue My Heart, as well as Grif's sister. And Kate has had a crush on Grif for as long as she can remember. Kate decides that at Holly's wedding, she is finally going to go for it. And is shut down. HARD. Thus begins their crazy affair.
I have to say, Rumor Has It is probably my favorite story in this series. But, I absolutely love them all.
Kate is so great. She is an absolute walking contradiction. She is sweet and accommodating, and giving to everyone she sees. She always puts her needs back, taking on her families responsibilities since her family, more specifically, her father has been shirking his responsibilities. And she has become in fact, an enabler. But,when Grif comes back to town, he messes with her head and somehow gets under her skin enough to pursue him, even though he keeps telling her to walk away and he won't have sex with her. But, she sure is feisty and stubborn, so no way is she going to take no for an answer. And, since she is so sweet, she wears her heart on her sleeve, and has no problem telling Grif that she wants him over and over again. She's got some balls.
And, Grif.. Oh Grif. He's definitely hot. And sweet. And even though it was probably hard as hell for him, he does the 'right' thing and tells Kate no. Even though he is kicking himself for it, almost instantly. His heart is definitely in the right place.
So, I definitely recommend this amazing read for anyone. Just anyone.

I was not expecting it, but I fell in love when I was reading Rumor Has It. The guy had everything - self-deprecating humor, whimsy, independence, protection of his sister. I was only somewhat dismayed by the fact that I would have to wait about 20 years (since he is only 7). How can you not love a little boy who dresses as Green Arrow or Tony Stark and says, "A dork is a whale's penis". And how can you not love an author that KNOWS that?! Tommy is Kate Evans' little brother, and one of the many reasons that her sense of responsility has kept her frantically running in place in her hometown of Sunshine Idaho. Her stasis is interrupted by the sexy Griffin Reid, a returning veteran suffering from PTSD, migraines and father issues. Look for a lot of the hotness factor (such as when Grif wakes up, looks out the window, and sees Kate ("Grif looked down at himself and remembered - he'd slept in the buff and stood there in the window butt-ass naked...Still, she didn't play coy or shy and look away"). I can just picture that scene (of course, maybe the pictures that Jill Shalvis and Kristin Higgins post on their facebook pages help with that). Those two authors might be amused to know that they ping-pong between first and second in my romance book-bed-and-wine category. And I have to say that Jill edged ahead slightly with Rimor Has It. I am a sucker for the guys that fight for our nation and the women that teach our children.

This is the story of Kate and Griffin.

Kate is a second grade teacher and when she nervous she starts stating science facts. She hasn't been too lucky in the relationship department so when her best friend Holly is getting married she decides it's the perfect opportunity to have a fun night just for herself, a sort of adventure. She's been taking care of every one from her dad to her siblings and everyone that needs her, it's her turn to have a little fun. Her friend's brother is in town for the wedding and there's no other guy that makes her more nervous than Griffin. He's a playboy so it should be easy to get into his pants. Will she be able go seduce him for the night or is she not worth it for him?

Griffin left Sunshine many years ago thinking he would never come back. Now that he's back he's confused with the fact that he's not feeling suffocated but instead he feels like he's finally home. It doesn't help the fact that sweet Kate is making him feel things he never thought he'd feel for a woman before. Things are never as easy as they seem and he doesn't break her heart but he can't help but love her. What will he do when secrets about his life come out and he wants to run? Will he stay with Kate or will he break both their hearts and leave?

A beautiful story! Jill does it again and I can't wait for the next book in the series. They're just addictive!
