How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsSmith does it again!

I have been enjoying Smith’s backlist for a couple of years now, and this one absolutely rocks! From beginning to end, it is a journey of weird and crazy that you will never forget! Great characters, dialogue and a story that makes you want to keep reading even when you have work to do! When I finished, I went searching for another Smith title... what else can I say? 5 stars for sure!

2.0 out of 5 starsStrange and Eerie Book
Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2013
This book has one of the strangest plots I have ever encountered. It has subplots that add little or nothing to the primary plot which has a small group fighting a takeover by creatures from a parallel world. Most of the book is very implausible. The book is very graphic and explicit in sexual and torture descriptions which may be offensive to some readers.

I finished reading it because I don't put down a boot in which I have invested time and money until it is finished. Despite this, I would probably not recommend it to others.

This books was in, my opinion, a better version of the movie 31 by rob zombie. I have a feeling Mr. Zombie might have drawn inspiration from this. But that's not all the book has a lot of great gory scenes, and really twisted characters, I'm not a big fan of the whole circus thing but that is jist me. Still if you enjoy killer clowns and a lot of twisted characters give this story a try.

What a ride! I always have an awesome time with Mr. Smith's books. This was no exception....What a unique and creative voice. This carnival idea could have gone a completely different way with any other author. Instead you get the taste of something completely extraordinary that you cannot put the book down until you reach the fantastic conclusion. This novel will give you interesting characters: fabulous villains, sweet and tough heroes. It will blend depraved horror with rip roaring adventure, and a touch of humour. Bravo! Let the show begin.....

"The Freakshow" is disgusting. It has a mixture of gore and sex (at the same time it seems) unlike anything I've read before. The freaks aren't the most imaginative "people". Most of the ways of dispatching humans are fairly mundane. Like reaching a hand into the stomach and pulling out the entrails and starting to eat them while the human is still alive. You know...stuff like that. But Smith will describe the scene in a paragraph where I used 20 words. Even the necrophilia mindset isn't off limits for Smith (although that character didn't get a chance to go through with it). The thing about this book is that it started up right away. There was no building up to it.

The thing I didn't like about it was there were 3 major story lines. Two converged completely, and the third ran in the background but ended up affecting the initial two. It was well done, but there would be several chapters between in between each scene. I found myself having to go back and re-read the ending of chapters to remember what was going on.

In thinking about how to rate this book, I recall the movie
Summer School . There were 2 guys that loved "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". And they rated it "2 thumbs up. 4 for gore". I have to admit that I liked that book. The story was nothing too new, but the execution of the story and the graphic descriptions of the acts in the book made it intriguing and hard to put down.

Despite its horrific depictions of death, torture, and gore, this was a fun and riveting read. The freaks are all individually interesting and the heroes are fleshed out characters you can root for. Theres enough lore about the freaks to satisfy you but kept mysterious enough to leave you craving more. Must read for horror fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Great Horror From Bryan Smith!

A great fast read lots of suspense & entertainment and chalk full of horror...Mr Smith may never win a Pulitzer but he always delivers with great action packed horror....I have read several of Smiths work and likes his style of bringing several interrelated stories together for one great conclusion.....Some how the Freaks in Freak Show where much scarier then the hillbilly cannibals, demon possessed humans, Reaper revived corps, teenage girl Psychopaths and demon possessed cheerleaders with chainsaws from his other stories......Pick up one of Mr Smiths books and you will not be disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Bryan Smith's Best Work

The story started out strong, but quickly lost me about a third of the way in. The characters were just so over the top and ridiculous that I ceased caring about their plight. It was as if Smith was blindly trying find his story without any real thought to the details, events, or personality. I understand this is an earlier piece from Smith, so if you are considering one of his stories, pick up 'Depraved' or 'The Killing Kind', or The Dark Ones' instead.

You know how some books you take your sweet time to read. This book you ought to make time to read. If you're a horror genre fan THIS is the book to get. It shall grasp you from page one, leave you hanging on another page and then for the ultimate it shall fascinate you.

Thus far I've bought three of this author's books. It cannot be a coincidence that ALL three are wonderful. This means, of course, I have to get all of them.
