I enjoyed the suspense and mystery of this book

I enjoyed the suspense and mystery of this book, and the less-than-pretty picture it paints of the powers-that-be of Orange County, California. I especially liked the bit of Ross Macdonald influence in the writing and the world view. I didn't love the characters or the mystery, none of which were all that unique ultimately, although the author gave it a fine try with the relationship between the narrator and his adoptive father. This book is a lot better than some of the rote suspense novels around in recent years, with more characterization and better quality writing, but I feel like it recalls some classics more than it actually reaches their level. Certainly recommended for anyone who likes a good dramatic crime drama and mystery.
