My fourth grade teacher had been in the Marines with John Glenn in Korea and talked about him in school. He admired him and for us kids, Life Magazine made them all instant heroes.
But even to a kid like me, it became clear at the time that Glenn wasn’t his colleagues’ favorite. Too straight arrow.
But time tells us they were being too hard on him. Let’s review.
- Stayed devoted to his wife, literally from playpen to grave while some of the others couldn’t keep it in their pants.
- fought in two wars earning a pile of medals, all without complaint.
- First American to orbit the earth - riding a rocket that blew up 50 percent of the time.
- Served his state of Ohio for several terms in the US Senate, almost without challenge.
It was an exemplary life, yet his book is almost an “aww shucks” recollection of a freckle-faced small town boy.
If you grew up thinking these guys were special, as I did, then this was a fun and easy read.
