We were shocked and disappointed at the sexist message
Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2018
My kids and I love to read books about characters and series. But as we read this story, we all got a little confused, disappointed, and angry. Froggy hates females, and they apparently live in a world where girls only exist to want to kiss boys? As we read, I explained to my kids that maybe this was an older book, filled with stereotypes and prejudices from a time gone by, only to flip to the copyright page and discover how recently this book was published. It was really sad to see such a blatant message of sexism with its portrayal of how annoying any girl must be and the ending reinforces Froggy’s viewpoint. I’m still scratching my head at how Froggy is a beloved character if he acts and speaks in such negative ways toward women and also disrespecting his dad at the movies by throwing popcorn. Not the best Froggy book, and I’d steer clear of it altogether unless you’re looking to have a conversation on stereotypes and male privilege in children’s literature.
