5.0 out of 5 starsDOOM reads just like a live-action video game
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2014
DOOM is a recognizable brand to any 90s kid or true gamer from the PC age of first person video gaming. One of my most vivid memories as a kid is sitting in my underwear at the large IBM PC a kid, around the age of six, blasting away demons, boneys, and hell-princes until late into the night. DOOM changed video gaming and provided a fun, horror filled universe for fans to live in. Sadly, as a kid, I never read the DOOM novelizations. Now, more than twenty years later, I am enjoying this series. The first book in the series is so far its best.
Imagine your worst nightmare becoming a reality. Humanity’s conception of hell and horror are made real by alien invaders who have one prime objective: destroy humanity!
"Fly" Taggart and Arlene, "A.S.", must traverse Mars’ moons and destroy thousands (literally!) of factory produced demon-like creatures and, wait for it . . . zombies! Yes, I think this is definitely one of those long lost zombie tales that should make a come back. Although I am personally burned out on the zombie genre (sorry The Walking Dead fans, but it is true), I felt revived by the undeads in the DOOM series. Their lemon-stinking existence is a constant reminder that when the dead walk the earth (DOOM #2), so will demons.
DOOM reads just like a live-action video game. The authors do a fun job to explain why rockets and MediPacks appear randomly when levers are pulled. Great imagination plus care and love was put into these stores for fans of DOOM. Knee-Deep in the Dead is by far the best of the four part series.

SPECIFICALLY FOR THE EBOOK:

Why is it that this book has GONE UP IN PRICE over the last few years, but doesn't seem to have ever been given a proper editing run? Every single chapter suffers from unchecked typos and misused words. The story is fine, but I expect this level of sheer incompetence from only the newest of indie authors who can't afford good editing. But Simon and Schuster? A company that has been around for almost 100yrs? I expect better. HIGHLY recommend waiting for this to go on sale, if they ever let it. The last two in the series were $0.99 each a few years back, and yet this one has never been.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best version of the "DOOM" storyline

Author does a great job of making a video game of endless carnage against the forces of hell into a really great story that makes sense. Characters have a nice arc over the series. Books 1-3 are great. Book 4 kinda took a weird turn for me

Not too shabby of a read. It does portray the game play all too often. Walking through mazes and tunnels like the original game. Key card here and key card there, kill that and this and more of it. If you enjoyed the game from the early 90s and really enjoy the latest DOOM reboot from iD, you'll enjoy this book. Started reading the second book and looking forward to reading about how the Marines kick ass and take names!

3.0 out of 5 stars An OK book
Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2004

First off I've been a Doom fan since day 1 of the game's launch. And that was about 10 years ago.

This first book reminds me of the Aliens trilogy.

But it's worse in content. I think the writer has focused too much on the game action instead of trying to build a story based on that plot and thus ended up with some passages that just don't sit right. For example he talks about the megahealth sphere, which is an item in the game that gives you 100 points to your health.

Descriptive narration tends to be superficial and I feel the book only gets better at about page 120 [out of 250 that the book has].

So I'd say it's an OK book, could have been better, read it only if you like the Doom plot.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars, with indulgence. I'm reading book 2 and the story is much richer.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you are a doom love you have to get this

this is an amazing book its not that long and i just loved it
the picture shown is not the cover you will get
the one you will get is a demons face but i didn't really care ether way the book is
if you love doom (and i mean the game not the movie) you need to get it
the reason i say you shouldn't get it if you love the movie and not the game is because the movie and the game have nothing in common the movie is biased on the game to the extent that there is evil monsters and they are on mars THAT'S IT! the game is demons coming from hell and wanting to take back earth the movie is about an ancient spices creating an extra chromosome and some of them going crazy
its a 250 page book
a great read very intense-full
the book reads kind of as if you were playing the game

the only downfall is you get the first and second one and you read those but when you go to get the third one its like 50 bucks which is kind of horrible.

otherwise its an amazing buy

Warning. I was not aware of this at the time but I am now. This is not a story about Doom Guy but more of a story set in Doom in an alternate universe. This story HEAVILY revolves around a love story....HEAVILY. Also keep in mind that this book is, what I can only assume, meant for teens so there is next to no explicit content. All in all its a fun read if you like cheesy quips or want a soft approach to the Doom series.

Synopsis:
Marine Corpral Flynn Taggart along with the rest of Fox company are sent to Mars's moon Phobos to see why the colonists stationed there have gone silent. Once on Phobos, Taggart is detained for assulting his superior officer, and the rest of Fox company preceeds into the base. Taggart hears the screams of his allies over the intercome and sets off in hot pursuite. But what Taggart sees in the confiends of the Phobos base are horrors that defy all explanation. Taggart must now comabat these living terrors in order to find the surviving members of his company... if any.

Review:
I have never played any of the"Doom" games but i imagine that they are alot like this book: one guy fighting waves upon waves of horible monsters in gory combat, without any real substance. Sure in the beginning when Taggart kills his first demon, one gets excited and believes that there is hope for this book, but after about 200 pages of this mindnumbing fighting with nothing in-beetween one gets bored quick. Graned there is some good character development and exciting moments in here, but they are simply smothered to death with redundant battle scenes. I would hope that the sequels are an inprovement.

Grade:B-

Recommendation: people who played and liked the "Doom" videogame franchise

Cost: Get a 3.00 used copy this book is not worth 7.99.

First exposed to this book in a hard copy I borrowed from my friend. I own the digital and paperback copies of the whole series now. Might not be entirely Canon, but the story and flow fill in a lot of blanks for me
