Engaging series for 9 year olds and up

My son got the first series of this book from school and really liked it, read through it way too fast. His Aunt got him the next several books in the series and he's been flying through those. He enjoys the books and is exciting for the next. My sister-in-law, an avid book reader, started reading them with him and noted there is a lot of teenage angst, laziness, and whiny-ness that is portrayed by the dragons and she didn't care for that so much. It's tricky because the more my son sees, reads, experiences these kinds of attitudes, responses etc the easier it is for him to learn that as how he handles situations. So I have to be careful with what he reads, sees, etc. to counter some of it with what is the right way to handle situations. Overall, I'd still recommend this series.
