5.0 out of 5 starsOur True Identity
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 21, 2013
As a young college student who was not covered by the blood of Christ yet, I had quickly learned to place my Identity in what I accomplished and owned. Whether that would be in football, women, partying, GPA, athletic performance, where I have been, who I know, career success, prestige, and possessions. Even though I had accomplished many things, I still felt as if my life was missing something. Which is why I always longed for more and more thinking and hoping that one day I would look back and be satisfied with my life. Then in just an instance, my life became broken, my career success seemed to fade, football was gone, family broke apart, grades slipped, girlfriends left, possessions were no longer affordable, and I had turned to alcohol and partying to numb the pain which was easy to do in college. And the foundation of my life crumbled, and the towers I had built in my life came down with a crash.

Then, just as I felt life could not get any worse I met a man who shared the gospel with me and took me under his wing. As I was investigating this person Jesus Christ, I noticed there was a change in my life. This change came through hearing and trusting in the Gospel and understanding that I desperately needed a savior. My entire life I had placed my identity in worldly things that could never satisfy me thinking they would save my life, and now I understand that my life can ONLY be satisfied in Christ and understanding who I am in Him.

This book "Who Do You Think Your Are" is an outstanding book because we really do have an identity crisis which Mark Driscoll points out in the beginning of the book. Mark Driscoll hit on point with every topic on who we are in Christ. And this book will open your eyes to see more of God and how we can reflect his image along with studying Paul's letters to the church.

Mark Driscoll requires you to read the book of Ephesians (Paul's letter to Ephesus) along with this book so you can have a better understanding of what Paul was telling the body of Christ (Who they are in Christ). Paul constantly praises the church body, prays for them, reminds them that they are loved, guilt free, righteous, holy, saints, and most importantly covered in the blood of Christ.
This book changed how I thought of my self. I no longer have to see my self as a sinful man, or dwell in my sin and feel guilty. But, I now know and I can say that I am in Christ, I can fight sin, I can reflect God's image, I am JOYFUL, I am righteous and holy, I am forgiven...Man, it sure does feel good to say those things.

My favorite paragraph in the book...
"You aren't what's been done to you but what Jesus has done for you. You aren't what you do but what Jesus has done. What you do doesn't determine who you are. Rather, who you are in Christ determines what you do." (pg.3,line 3-5, Driscoll)

Like John Piper states, "It is not books that change people's lives, but paragraphs." And this paragraph (^^^) changed me absolutely!!!

I would definitely recommend this book to everyone!!! And please do not put this book off, because if you do not know how you are defined in Christ, something else will define you.

3.0 out of 5 starsA Decent Exposition of Ephesians
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 6, 2014
Mark Driscoll is probably one of the most polarizing figures within conservative evangelicalism today. There’s no doubt that his methods can seem a little outlandish and he’s definitely said things that I would never dream of saying (much less from the pulpit); but, I’ll be honest. There’s something about him that I like. I like the fact that he’s willing to boldly speak truth in the opposition’s face (even if I don’t always agree with him). I also admire the fact that he’s doing ministry and preaching from a conservative theological perspective while living in one of the most unchurched, liberal cities in America. I’ve read a couple of his books and while I do find myself disagreeing on some issues (primarily Calvinist/Arminian ones), I find his writing enjoyable and many of his points valid. This book was no different. It’s basically a broad exposition of Ephesians with a special emphasis on the Christian’s identity in Christ. It’s an encouraging book for a Christian and I’d recommend it with a minor caveat. Like all Calvinists, Driscoll denies our ability in Christ to live holy, free from conscious sin. But the thing that I don’t understand is how he makes the statement several times that we are called to be holy. He just follows every mention of that call with a parenthetical statement that reminds us how sinful we still are. So… are we holy or sinful? How can we be both? Anyway, he only does it two or three times in the whole book so I’d still consider it worth a read.

Got a copy of this book from Mars Hill to read in advance. I have read several of his other books and can easily say in terms of writing quality and material this is Mark Driscoll's best book by far. He stays very close to the biblical text, but brings out a lot of great application through story telling and pastoral experience. I myself have been walking through what I really have felt is a certain kind of identity crisis in my life for the past 5 years and this book really spoke to me. It is hard to understand who we truly are in Christ, and even harder to apply that knowledge to our actual walks. Since reading this book and interacting with friends and family I have become more and more convinced that how we identify ourselves is at the heart of so many issues in our lives. I have already purchased several copies and given them to people close to me.

Mark Driscoll is a very controversial pastor, on both sides of the spectrum. Liberals hate him because he holds to a classical/orthodox biblical worldview and conservatives/fundamentals don't like him either because of his ability to say things in a very straight forward (or blunt) fashion. A lot of the criticism that you read in the reviews of this book have more or less nothing to do with the actual book. The book itself is incredibly solid and helpful. But if you do not hold to an evangelical worldview don't be surprised if you are don't agree with him.

But I recommend that you do something radical. Instead of listening to the hate regarding Driscoll's beliefs, read the book and see if God speaks to you through Ephesians and the expositing of His Word! You just might be surprised.

What does it mean to have your identity in Christ. As Christians do we consider what we have placed our identity in. Do we know and how can we know. Pastor Mark has an I am statement beginning with a question mark and each statement thereafter with a statement being in Christ. He shares personal testimonies of those who have battled their identity in Christ. It is a battle in every area of our lives. In relationships, what we do and ultimately who we are. While Satan tells us did God say, just as Jesus was tempted in his identity, we can by the word of God and know the I AM. Rightly knowing our identity affects our relationship with God and others. I think just like Job who lost everything knew who he was in Christ knew reality and clung to the truth which is who God is. A humbling study that causes you to think further

4.0 out of 5 stars Pastor Driscoll...a pretty good author

Although I love Pastor Driscoll's writing as he goes through the Book of Ephesians, he heavily disperses his pet doctrine of Calvinism into it as though it too is Biblical doctrine...which it's not. I hope we can remember John Calvin was just a man, albeit, a great tool in the reformation, but still just a man as you and I are, and he did not write biblical truth, it was his own slant on what he felt God might be saying. The gospel is for who-so-ever-will...And we were given the gift of free choice by God to respond to the clarion call to salvation from God Almighty...and those who come and receive Christ are the chosen.
Still, this is a wonderful look at the marvelous book of Ephesians and who we truly are in Christ. This must be our focus, not Calvinism.

Mark Driscoll does an outstanding job of encouraging followers of Jesus to see themselves as God sees them. In many ways, this is a GREAT companion to Tchividjian's "Jesus+Nothing=Everything." Driscoll is of the great leaders among young Calvinists and Reformed Theology today. One talent he possesses is his ability write like he speaks. If you enjoy his style as a communicator and preacher, you'll be encouraged by his work on the printed page.

We are excited to use this book for our staff team in India. Rick Warren said the greatest need for the upcoming generation is to heal themselves before they can help others. This books focuses on that topic of people's identity in Christ. Excited for good discussions to come from this book.

I confess that I enjoy listening to Mark Driscoll's sermons. He preached a sermon series on Ephesians, and the contents of this book are not much different. I found both to be very encouraging reminders of who I am in Jesus Christ.
