5.0 out of 5 starsOur True Identity

As a young college student who was not covered by the blood of Christ yet, I had quickly learned to place my Identity in what I accomplished and owned. Whether that would be in football, women, partying, GPA, athletic performance, where I have been, who I know, career success, prestige, and possessions. Even though I had accomplished many things, I still felt as if my life was missing something. Which is why I always longed for more and more thinking and hoping that one day I would look back and be satisfied with my life. Then in just an instance, my life became broken, my career success seemed to fade, football was gone, family broke apart, grades slipped, girlfriends left, possessions were no longer affordable, and I had turned to alcohol and partying to numb the pain which was easy to do in college. And the foundation of my life crumbled, and the towers I had built in my life came down with a crash.
Then, just as I felt life could not get any worse I met a man who shared the gospel with me and took me under his wing. As I was investigating this person Jesus Christ, I noticed there was a change in my life. This change came through hearing and trusting in the Gospel and understanding that I desperately needed a savior. My entire life I had placed my identity in worldly things that could never satisfy me thinking they would save my life, and now I understand that my life can ONLY be satisfied in Christ and understanding who I am in Him.
This book "Who Do You Think Your Are" is an outstanding book because we really do have an identity crisis which Mark Driscoll points out in the beginning of the book. Mark Driscoll hit on point with every topic on who we are in Christ. And this book will open your eyes to see more of God and how we can reflect his image along with studying Paul's letters to the church.
Mark Driscoll requires you to read the book of Ephesians (Paul's letter to Ephesus) along with this book so you can have a better understanding of what Paul was telling the body of Christ (Who they are in Christ). Paul constantly praises the church body, prays for them, reminds them that they are loved, guilt free, righteous, holy, saints, and most importantly covered in the blood of Christ.
This book changed how I thought of my self. I no longer have to see my self as a sinful man, or dwell in my sin and feel guilty. But, I now know and I can say that I am in Christ, I can fight sin, I can reflect God's image, I am JOYFUL, I am righteous and holy, I am forgiven...Man, it sure does feel good to say those things.
My favorite paragraph in the book...
"You aren't what's been done to you but what Jesus has done for you. You aren't what you do but what Jesus has done. What you do doesn't determine who you are. Rather, who you are in Christ determines what you do." (pg.3,line 3-5, Driscoll)
Like John Piper states, "It is not books that change people's lives, but paragraphs." And this paragraph (^^^) changed me absolutely!!!
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone!!! And please do not put this book off, because if you do not know how you are defined in Christ, something else will define you.
