I read this book years ago, but apparently never gave an opinion.... I love this author. She writes well and the plot is developed. There are some character flaws that you can easily overlook if you enjoy good chemistry between main characters.

Ember was written well, and I can understand how an 18 year old would only be concerned about the boy....but it got so extreme that Ember comes off really shallow at times. It makes her unattractive.

Eli.....is a great read. Stacey gives you just enough information to keep you flipping the page.

Love this world and the characters Stacey writes. Try this one.

1.0 out of 5 starsHorrible Main Characters!!!

The heroine is a complete idiot, she whines, makes stupid, selfish decisions, then chooses the biggest, abusive jerk for her love interest. I could not find anything to like about these two characters! I have never disliked main characters as much as these two.

******Spoilers*****

Just sighs and head shaking the whole way through this book. Ember is a teenager and just legal but I really couldn't get around how often she runs away from something. Add to that the fact she's running into the woods constantly is annoying. Then there's her relationship with Eli. They're both hot and cold and she feels this draw but she's a closed off person usually, but she reveals all to Eli, then she wants to kiss him, then she argued with him, then her feelings are hurt because he won't talk to her, then she kisses him again, then she's working with him. I mean there was so much back and forth, if I were watching in real life I feel like I would have gotten whiplash. The hate to love was poorly done in this book, particularly because the "hate" part didn't last long and the "love" part was inconceivable.

That Ember called Eli to pick her up from jail made no sense when she had friends who could do it that's she's known longer. The reason? Oh I just couldn't resist. Then he leaves her alone in the damned woods and what does she do? Call her friends to pick her up. Just no. This book was not for me at all.

Not to mention the decisions she makes and maybe she's supposed to come across as sassy but her behavior is bipolar in the way she accuses Eli of being. And can someone explain why her school counselor and principal would have say over psychotic medication she'd be taking? What the hunh? That part of the book was discordant, not to mention the animosity of the police detective Weiss. Again, it's a no which sucks because the storyline seems interesting underneath all of the other stuff. And I'm not even going to mention the dreams. It's fast become one of my petc peeves for authors to constantly write in dream events. I skipped almost all of them. Will not continue the series.

1.0 out of 5 stars DNF Hot, cold, whiplash, multiple personalities

You name it, thats the main characters.. I tried to finish the book to figure out why the MCs were suppose to be enemies and what they actually were, but they were too irritating. I'm sorry it's not fair for me to say when I didn't even finish the book, but the whiplash was too much.

Ember is a loner but reveals everything to a man she's afraid of, hates, and lusts for. She's still a child and whines alot when she doesn't get her way.. Eli is even worse, he's mean, possessive, arrogant, too old, confused and so hot and cold it's dizzying. He doesn't seem to know who he is.

I found the hard-on the sheriff and principle seemed to have for Em a bit odd. There's no proof of foul play but she's the suspect and goes to juvie. While the step dad seems to remain clueless about her magical attributes. Just didn't come together for me.

I read to 47% if it gets better idk.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dubious consent with her own body?
Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2021

I've read a lot of authors who toy with the line of consent, and many who unfortunately cross that line with their characters trying to convince the reader that it's acceptable when it's not. But never have I read a character who's own body violates her consent.
Sure, I've seen the trope of a supernatural pull between the two main characters or an unnatural sexual attraction between soulmates that draws them together. But to read the female protagonist scream mentally NO and try to fight only for her body to go against her was honestly a first, and I'm conflicted. It wasn't romantic or sexy, but oddly violating and disturbing. It was like witnessing an assault but the perpetrator is her own body. It reminded me of what can happen when someone is drugged and it made the relationship between the two main characters feel off.

Honestly the only reason I gave it 3 stars was because the story was interesting and made me want to finish at least this book, but not sure if I'll continue the series. Both the female protagonist and her love interest were insufferable and their relationship was shallow. The whole relationship is based on how hot our male lead is and an overwhelmingly strong sexual pull.
That's it.
Not because she witnesses his hidden soft side, not because of any mutual exchange of personal information or bonding they do while working together. Not because he saves her (almost every situation when she's in danger or is injured is because of him or his people) Instead she does all the talking, spilling all her personal info on him (yes I meant on as she dumps it on him and he hardly says anything) and he does nothing but smirk, brood, or stare at her in hate.
Not my cup of tea. Read at your own risk.

3.0 out of 5 stars Should've Been Way Shorter

Darkness of Light is the first book in Stacey Marie Brown's Darkness series. In this installment Ember struggles with feeling like an outsider as well as trying to hold onto reality. And what about her intense feelings for the mysterious Eli?

This book is too long and struggles because of it. There are many cases of scenes repeating themselves to the point of me being extremely bored during large portions of the book. Nearly every conversation between Ember and Eli starts with them being kind and ends with one of them storming away from the other. Every time Ember goes out somewhere there is a disaster.

The ending of the book is great just because we finally learn what's going on and the scenes aren't just repeats of earlier ones.

Ember is one of the most sex deprived characters I've seen. Even after she's been violently sexually assaulted, she still thinks of doing the nasty with Eli. Heck, seeing his sibling really turns her on because she's reminded of her 'love'.

This author needs to stay away from topics of sexual assault and rape. Besides Ember's libido recovering really fast, Eli pries for answers about the sexual assault and he is supposed to be the one readers are supposed to fall in love with. He should have given her distance when she refused to answer him. Also when Ember finds out her father might have raped her mother, she mourns him leaving them. Like...what? Why would you blame your rapist father for leaving you? Wouldn't you be happy?

I would recommend Darkness of Light to those that like paranormal romance.

2.0 out of 5 stars ... off to a rough start and I don’t feel like I’m going to go past the first 25% of ...

Darkness of Light is off to a rough start and I don’t feel like I’m going to go past the first 25% of this book. I find it annoying when YA books make adults over the top unreasonable. In this case a school principle and a sheriff harassing a girl for what appear to be electrical problems at the school. They have no proof she is involved in any sort of sabotage and the problems apparently show no sign of foul play. The principle and the sheriff are just certain she is behind it though and are blaming her and are making her to go a school for troubled kids anyway or she won’t get to graduate and will be expelled… It just doesn’t work for me, and many parents would hire a lawyer by this point, but the author needed this to happen to make her plot work out.

Another thing that is not working for me is that the story is placed in Olympia Washington, a small city with the population of 50,000 and the author is treating it like it is a really small town. Olympia has 9 high schools and the Thurston county sheriff does not have time to harass one kid over and over again based on something so flimsy and unrealistic. I went and look at the author’s bio and see she is not from Washington State and I have my doubts she’s actually been to Olympia before.

I’ll be telling my teen to skip this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great start to the series!

I started this book on an add from Amazon that the first in the series was free. I picked it up...because, why not??? I had not heard of the author and it was free so the decision was easy to give it a try. First off the description was very intriguing but I have read books about troubled teens before. Something about this book just said "READ ME'. So I did......in 4 hours.....It was that good!

I loved the mystery behind Ember, Torin and Eli. You did not know who was bad or who was good and the story kept me guessing the entire time and all of my guesses were wrong... I love a book that will surprise me. The world building was nothing special but I loved The magic system! I also fell in love with the conflicted bad boy, Eli. I was rooting for him the whole book. There was just something about him that I loved. The cover is gorgeous and I would have purchased it on that alone. Do yourselves a favor and get this book! I have already started on book 2 and look forward to where this is going!

I just plowed through this book in about a day. I didn't really think I was an UF fan until this book. I didn't read through the blurb or synopsis, just nabbed it on a whim and began. I'm really glad I did. I read through a lot of the reviews here once I was finished, and was appalled by the people saying that this first book was slow... drawn out... but people forget that this is a long series. You have to take the proper time to develop your characters and your world. There are too many UF books that just speed through the details and "get to the meat" and that does them a disservice.

We have a young MC that is a little bit of an outcast. She's a young 18 and has lived through the tragedy of her mother dying 5 years prior. She slowly begins to realize that there's something not quite right about her. She's not the same as everyone else. She finds herself in odd situations where strange things happen and gets blamed for all of it. She's sent to a "rehabilitation school" and that's where this story truly begins. She takes notice of a guy who is strikingly attractive. He seems to be everywhere she is and she notices odd things about him too. The chemistry between these two becomes outlandish, palpable. If the plot and world didn't progress at a perfect pace, I think it would have bothered me how much the story dwelled on the looks of said hot guy, but it didn't end up bothering me. By the last 25% of this book, things get crazy! It's the build up that we were waiting for and it's next level! I instantly went and grabbed book 2 so I didn't have to wait another second for the next installment. I highly recommend anything by this author!

3.0 out of 5 stars I was Darkness & Light

3 ⭐⭐⭐

Darkness of Light is the first book in the Darkness series by Stacey Marie Brown.

Ember Brycin thought she was hallucinating, seeing bizarre creatures, hearing voices and being able to do unusual stuff. She was then sent to an institution for the troubled youths. There she was able to meet Eli Dragen whom she met once in jail. 😳

The concept of the story was good, it was interesting at first especially with Ember’s identity.

I think the story is heading in a good direction. It's just that the story was dragged on for too long, nothing much happens in the book until the final pages. At first I find it really hard to figure out where the chemistry is between them. I can’t keep up with Eli’s mood swings and Ember is a bit annoying. Honestly, I also can’t grasp the animosity of Detective Weiss to Ember.

Still the story was interesting with unique characters. 👌🏻
