1.....Take The Monkeys And Run
Barbara is a housewife who is having trouble with her husband, Howard, and one night she hears noises at the house next door. She finds five monkeys in her tree the next day and calls the cops to protect her three daughters. Men in black show up and shut down the police. Barbara and her two neighbors/friends decide to find out why no one is investigating. They make a plan but it goes awry, they are kidnapped and Barbara finds out secrets of her town and family. She wonders if she should have listened to the police and Howard and stayed out of it.
2โ€ฆ..Citizen Insane
This time Barbara is involved in solving the shooting of a mom from schools. She is kidnapped, has a crazy woman in her front yard, her husband is still staying away and her friend, Colt, is there to help her. This is a good series, but Barb seems to flip-flop from smart P.I. to scared mom worrying about her kids and about her neighbors thinking how bad of a mom she is. She needs to figure out what she wants and if she wants to be a hero or wimp and if she is going to let her husband keep her in the dark and fool around in his job.
3โ€ฆ..Silenced By The Yams
Barbara is invited to a showing of a new movie opening and one of the directors is killed. Her friend, Frankie, is accused of the crime. Barb knows he wouldnโ€™t do it. She is kidnapped and later, she is blown up. With the help of Frankie, Colt, and her different girlfriends, Barbara solves a big case with a twist. She is still self-deprecating and oscillating between brave to coward from one page to another.
4โ€ฆ..Saturday Night Cleaver
Barbara is taking care of her three kids and husband, Howard, after his bad crash while on his last day of work. Plus, the doctor put her on a diet and told her to walk. While walking, she finds a hand and male genitals in the woods. Howard is bored and when their friend, Colt, is missing Howard and Barbara go investigate.

Huntress (I hunt books)
3.0 out of 5 starsTaken in small doses...a funny series.
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on February 22, 2015
I enjoyed the first book in this series so much that I bought the box set in hopes of more hilarity. There is a lot of humor in these stories. Barbara Marr seems to get herself in the worst of predicaments without even trying. Her friends are quirky. I would probably hit her husband upside the head a few times if he kept telling me that 'he can't tell me'. What good is having an FBI husband if you can't use him for information.
As I read further into the series, I started losing interest. Oh, the humor is there, and often, very funny. But it is very hard to believe that all this mayhem is occurring in a suburb called Rustic Woods. I kept thinking throughout the series that the FBI really needs to move their headquarters here because this is where all the action is.
So, the humor is funny, the characters quirky, but by the fourth story, I was getting tired of it. Sorry.

The stories are more than a little farfetched but they aren't documentaries. The series is laced with humor. All of the characters mature through the stories. By the end Barbara is realizing that her mouth gets her into trouble and that she is a fairly vindictive "friend" and she starts making amends. That is a good change for her and for those around her.

Her supporting cast, husband, old boyfriend, and three or four women friends add to the depth of the series.
Each of the stories stands alone, so there is a little repetition catching up the new reader who doesn't start at the beginning of the series.
FYI Very little in the way of unacceptable language. Some references to gore.
I like they way the series "ended" leaving room for a new chapter without being a cliffhanger.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Escape!

Easy reading; and these are a fun set of mysteries. I do have a bit of a problem imagining the main character, because the only thing that seems to have been described is her curly hair. Her husband's resemblance to George Clooney is repeated a bit too often, as is her fondness for a certain movie director and a great star, although I do like that particular quirk when used sparingly and I hope she gets her wish. I would recommend starting at the beginning of the series and reading all her boks in order to get the finest impact. She DOES get into some situations that border on the insane (I will never use white gravel again!), but my advice is to go for it. However, remember to start with Book One, because she WILL hook you!

4.0 out of 5 stars BARBARA MARR MYSTERIES BOXED SET
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on January 10, 2014

I really enjoyed this series. Barbara Marr is a 40 something soccer mom who finds trouble and murder around every corner. She has three daughters who keep her busy. She has a complicated relationship with her mother, but as the series progresses she understands her better and accepts her more. Her husband is a hunky George Clooney look alike. In the first book, she learns his true profession..in the subsequent books, he retires and changes professions. Each book gets better and more fun to read. This series is all fun reading. If you are looking for light, fun entertainment, this is for you. If you are looking for serious mystery reading, you may want to skip it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Need a light-weight distraction? You've come to the right place.

Light, easy and quick to read, just right for those "snowed-in" days when you need a little lift but don't want to think about life too much. The characters are not (and not meant to be) realistic but they are quirky and funny. The situations are unreal--again, not necessarily a bad thing! A couple of the stories need a little proof-reading; however, this was not terribly distracting (and I'm easily distracted by sloppy writing, so these had to be minor). Not great fiction, nor is this intended to be so.
Reading this is like watching old reruns on TV. Nothing to tax your mind, and sufficient material to keep you amused. Relax and enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars kinda out there fun these books are for you

If you want some honest, kinda out there fun these books are for you! No graphic sex but you know the heroine and her husband have a great sex life, no swearing, maybe a few bible swear words but I don't remember any taking the Lord's name or God's name in vain. These are laugh out load funny! I would be reading late at night while my husband was sleeping and I would have to try not to shake the bed from laughing so hard. I would love to have this author as my neighbor but then we would probably get into way too much trouble! You could let your girls to your great grandma read these books. Treat yourself to some wacky, been there fun!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Mystery With a Touch of Humor

These books are a fun read. The main character, Barbara Marr, is certainly a woman who seems to attract trouble. Somehow dead bodies turn up wherever she goes. Karen Cantwell's writing combines humorous dialogue, an interesting cast of characters appearing in all four books, and plots interesting enough to keep my attention. I can't say the main character is believable, but if she were, she would be just another female detective rather than the sarcastic, funny, quirky woman she is. For anyone looking for light reading with a touch of humor, this is the perfect set of books in which to lose yourself.

Ok. I really didn't like the first 2 books. I thought Barb was a total jellyfish who I wanted to punch in the face. Boohoo, your husband left. Get a spine . Be brave for your kids. Then, later in book 1, she got a bit better. Book 2 was still a lot of insecurities but she did better. Books 3 and 4 were much better. Better plot twists, characters had much more depth. Story line was much better.
If you really didn't care for the first book, I would say to stick it out until the end.
I don't think old Barb is an annoying wet noodle anymore. :)
