How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we donโ€™t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

3.0 out of 5 starsUneven. I found parts of this very compelling, and other parts distinctly off-putting.
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on November 22, 2020
This is the first book in a science fiction series that contains aliens, conspiracies, and military elements. I found it a mixed bag. At times, I was swept up by action sequences. At times, I was intrigued by the aliens and other aspects of the plot. Although the characterization lacked much nuance, I didn't object, being in the mood for a book with unambiguously good characters. Alas, however, there were times when I was put off by the tone, specifically by the way women were described and by the way men reacted to them. I expect there are large numbers of readers who wouldn't have been bothered by this at all, but it did bother me.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Perfect, But Very, Very Good!
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on May 5, 2014

To summarize without spoiling: Gannon's main character, a journalist and polymath by the name of Caine Riordan, stumbles upon a sensational secret on the moon and, for his trouble, is stuck in the freezer for thirteen years. When his handlers finally deign to wake him up, they rope him into their covert intelligence outfit and send him to Delta Pavonis III to determine whether Exxon's future iteration, which has set up operations on the planet in the hopes of cornering the oil market in the outlying colonies, is hiding evidence of sapient native life. Riordan's role in this mission - and what he eventually discovers - makes him the target of some very persistent assassins. It also pulls him into a dicey diplomatic adventure that may very well bring doom to Earth.

This is Gannon's first solo novel, I believe, and the start of a series -- and on the whole, I liked it. Gannon strikes a good balance between penning a story that feels satisfying and complete and introducing some new questions that will no doubt be tackled in book two. I particularly enjoyed the final segment; once the aliens show up, the political intrigue that results is masterfully written. Watching the alien powers in question jockeying for position - and watching poor Earth getting caught in the middle - was absolutely fascinating.

There were a few things that bothered me about Fire with Fire, though. I'm not a fan of large corporations, but I do think Gannon misses - or at least fails to mention - how government has played a role in their ascendancy. I also think Riordan is just a little too perfect. Renaissance man though he may be, he would've been more sympathetic if, at least a few times, something turned out to be beyond his multiple areas of expertise.

Still, when I read some of the other reviews out there, I boggle. One reviewer complains, for example, that Riordan doesn't react with sufficient emotion to losing thirteen years plus a hundred hours of his life -- which prompts me to wonder if we've even read the same book because I saw plenty of signs that he isn't happy with his situation and is especially motivated to find out why he was effectively pulled out of circulation. Here's a newsflash: people don't all react to trauma in the same way. Riordan does not appear to have personal attachments that would have been wrenched by a thirteen year displacement (except for the one which, for spoilery reasons, he doesn't remember anyway). What's more, he strikes me as a stoic; it makes sense, therefore, that instead of bemoaning his fate, he would put on the hat of the investigative journalist and seek to uncover what the hell happened -- with, of course, some liberal amounts of snark directed at the people responsible for his predicament.

And the claim that Gannon's characters are indifferent to genocide? Based on what I read, that's completely off-base. When Riordan discovers that atrocities are indeed being perpetrated against the natives on Delta Pavonis III, he does do something about it -- but because he doesn't spend pages nursing a useless rage about future!Exxon's malfeasance, that fact evidently fails to register on some readers' radar.

This is a book about people who act in a deliberate and considered way based on high ideals and a mature sense of the universe's dangers. The title - Fire with Fire - refers to the existential crisis Earth ultimately faces and to the sad reality that those tasked with protecting the innocent are often forced to dirty their own noses on their charges' behalf. Upon reflection, I suspect this is probably what bothers the above-discussed detractors most. Many would like to imagine that there is no need for the cloak and dagger -- that there is no need for government secrecy, honeypot spies, and all the rest. But the wolves are at the door, and we do in fact need our own dogs to drive them away. That is the state of the fallen world in which we live.

What do you do when you discover someone or something is out to destroy your planet, the only basket you have to hold all your eggs?
Follow along as Caine Riordan discovers how deep manipulation can be when the entire human race's existence is on the line.
To me Caine Riordan has the reasoning ability something like a Sherlock Holmes. Not the cocaine addicted, arrogant, Sherlock though. His mind is sharp. He is an investigative reporter at times. But he has ethics many in his position might not have.
This is the story of how Earth becomes acquainted with a universe in which we are not alone. It's not a new topic. Mr. Gannon does a great job putting an interesting tale together that makes you wonder where you are being led. I look forward to the further reveals of Caine Riordan's part in the tale begun here

4.0 out of 5 stars A slow start, but then ...

I asked some friends in a Facebook group for recommendations on this yearโ€™s Nebula award candidates. Several enthusiastically recommended โ€œMarque of Caineโ€ which was Book Five in a series, beginning with โ€œFire with Fire.โ€ I begrudgingly dove in, encouraged after learning the author was also a member of our group! I found myself not caring about the characters and feeling a bit frustrated that so much was clearly being held back by the all-knowing narrator. It seemed a bit too deux et machina how Caine seemed to have perfect foresight into exactly how to deal with each new challenging situation he encountered. I pushed the book off several times asking if I really wanted to commit to five more books of this. And then ... a page is turned and the real roller coaster ride began. Without spoilers, I did a long past midnight and up early the next day to finish because I just couldnโ€™t put this book down! Just grabbed books 2-5 as a Christmas present to myself and canโ€™t finish this review fast enough so I can start reading book two! Be patient - all will be revealed - and what a rush it will be!

4.0 out of 5 stars Rip-roaring action but somewhat flat characterizaion

So, Chuck Gannonโ€™s stuff. I like his books, butโ€ฆthereโ€™s not a lot of character development and I feel like a number of the characters are very two-dimensional. They sort of go through the motions that the author needs them to do dictated by the exigencies of the plot. Part of that may have to do with the impression I get that he doesnโ€™t have them fully realized in his own mind. There are a lot of characters in this series, and for a number of them, he seems to have just sketched out the character and his or her motivations without delving deeply into whether the things they are doing are really consistent with the character as-is.

Which sort of leads to my second point, Caine as superman. He is our multi-talented hero, a man who steps up to every challenge, a crack intelligence operative, a brilliant author, an outstanding naval officer, and so on. He seems to have no flaws. And the corollary to that is that he always seems to have precisely the skillset needed when danger or intrigue threatens things. The problem is that I donโ€™t really identify with him. The man with no flaws isnโ€™t really a man, he is a perfect machine. Because he has no flaws, he never grows, except to develop the requisite abilities to solve any problem that comes before him.

Now, this criticism isnโ€™t to say that I donโ€™t enjoy the books. They are rip-roaring military science-fiction and great fun. But there are a hair too many breathless escapes, a few too many convenient coincidences that favor the heroes for my taste. It takes a bit too much suspension of disbelief to completely pull me in to the story.

So, Justin gave it a two-star review and I agree with most of his criticisms, but (and you knew this was coming, didn't you?) characters aren't everything. There is also plot. And I have to tell you, Gannon really lays it on. He gets his heroes into and out of trouble at about 60 RPM. The pace just doesn't stop. That is why I am giving this four stars instead of two. The characterization is pretty flat, but the plot and action are just completely non-stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Damned interesting

I had a very difficult time with the first half, even setting it aside for months. However, when I picked it back up - in search of something lighter than the quantum mechanics treatise I was reading which even dumbed down demands a huge amount of mental acuity and energy - it really clicked for me. Itโ€™s a very ambitious book, clearly part of a larger cycle rather than even pretending to be standalone. The reality of twenty-first century writing, I know. But most of the subplots have been at least partially resolved, and while one would expect that to simplify things, both the existing subplots and sheer breadth of the main plot make it otherwise.

Characters are well drawn, distinct and relatable. None of the characters seem to act out of character, or illogically according to their natures and motivations. Pacing is more of a mixed bag, with several subplot arcs rising to crescendo at different times. Settings are interesting, although I could have preferred a bit more description. Overall, this reminded me indirectly of the old masters, Asimov or Seinlein or the like. Not necessarily stylistically, just in scope, breadth of vision.

Off to buy the next now.

To really understand "Fire with Fire" you have to accept that it's an origin story. Chuck Gannon has to set the stage for a wide ranging space opera/spy thriller, and consequently has a lot to convey to the reader. In FwF, he does this through the engaging story of Caine Riordan, author, investigator, and polymath. The story opens with the mystery of the missing 100 hours of Riordan's life. At first, the time gap serves as a virtual McGuffin, the plot detail that has no real meaning except to move the story along, like the ironically named "unobtanium" in the film Avatar. In search of those 100 missing hours, whose details Riordan can not recall, he becomes a spy, diplomat, statesman, and eventually a warrior, all the while peeling back later after layer of the mysteries of Earth's first - and second - contact with exosapiens. It's only in the final conclusion to the book, as it sets up the sequel and what will undoubtedly be a fantastic series that Gannon reveals the McGuffin is anything but...and that the missing 100 hours may hold the key to Earth's survival.

"Fire with Fire" is a great read, even if it starts a bit slow. Fans who grew up on Our Man Flint or Doc Savage will recognize a hero archetype we rarely see anymore, and by the mid-point of the book the story and action move at breakneck pace. Buy the book, and enjoy.

Caine Riordan is an intelligence analyst sent to the moon in 2105 to investigate the truth behind allegations of conspiracy. He stumbles into more than he bargained for, because he is caught and placed in cryo-storage for 12 years until the powers-that-be decide to thaw him out and give him a second chance at life. Work for us...or else!
Unfortunately, much has changed while he was away. Humanity discovered faster than light travel and has started to colonize the stars.
Fortunately, Riordan is a polymath - a person of wide-ranging knowledge and learning - capable of making intuitive leaps.
Just as well, because he's press-ganged on a mission to the Delta Pavonis system where all is not as it seems. Rival parties are intent on establishing control of certain...commodities. Commodities that may, or may not be linked to a primitive species hiding in the surrounding jungles.
As Riordan throws himself into his work, he discovers there might also be more to that species than people think.
Needless to say, mishap and mayhem abound, with assassins and saboteurs around every corner. But why?
I'll give you a clue. Suddenly, it become clear there's more, much more than Delta Pavonis under the microscope.
This is the first story I've read by Charles Gannon, and I've got to say, I liked it.
Well paced and fun to read.

I got this book because of the very good anthology Lost Signals which takes place in this universe. The worldbuilding and spycraft are probably the best parts of the tale. I appreciate a good megacorp dystopia as much as anyone. The hero was a bit too heroic and a bit too competent but that is okay and fits in the genre with the retro Lugh Surehand style jack of all trades polymath.

I feel like the book is what Gordon R Dickson might have wrote if he'd done some study on military intelligence and had kept the general trend of writing longer stories than he did in his youth. It reminded me of Wolfling updated to the 21st century with a different twist. The editing could have been tighter and more show vs tell.
