A good writer not meeting her potential
Reviewed in the United States on November 8, 2015
Ms. Katson has a lot of potential as a writer, but she needs to find a good, strong editor. It's not that there are grammar or punctuation errors, rather, she over-writes. All three books could be trimmed down into a single, exciting novel. As it stands, the books dwell too much on the protagonist's thought processes, reiterating things the reader has already understood from the story. I found myself skipping pages and then whole chapters just to get the story to move. Also, while some characters are well developed: Miriel and Catwin, other characters seem to suddenly "go mad" and behave in uncharacteristic ways: the High Priest, Catwin's foster mother, the Duke. This behavior is explained later, but I got the impression that the author had only just decided on the plot twists and had forced her characters into a mold. If I were her editor, I would suggest that she write the entire story, then revise it, rather than depending on a serial format. Or, release it serially after the story has been completed, so that the characterizations are fully realized and the story is balanced. I could easily tell that this was not a professionally edited piece and am sorry for that because this series could have been so much better.
