How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

VINE VOICE
5.0 out of 5 starsRecommended thriller with only one overused plot device
Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2020
I accidentally started out on book 3 of this series, so I know the writing improves.

The writing is still good in this debut, but the author leaned on a particular plot device too heavily to create ongoing tension.

The main character Rick Cahill kept getting “caught” by witnesses in compromising situations, and this just didn’t play for a guy who’s supposedly not stupid.

Otherwise the story and characters were well-developed, and the overall style of storytelling was sharp enough to encourage me to continue on with the series.

Recommended thriller.

The price was right. Since it didn't cost anything, I thought I would give it a try. I guess you get what you pay for!!! I couldn't get used to the choppy sentences. Clearly, the author was trying to emulate Rick's speech on Casablanca, but Humphrey Bogart was NOT the only voice in the movie and in 2021, this style is not at all appealing. I didn't make it much past chapter 3 before giving up on the book. There are not many books that I won't finish, but this one was definitely not worth my time!!!

This, book has more twists and turns than an Arizona mountain highway. Has a reader's attention from page one to done. Great character development-as in "real" life everybody's flawed. This is mystery, with psych insights woven as weft and weave in the plot.

Like noir? This is the real thing. Best I've read in years. Great character insight and "down on your luck" story moves fast with duplicitous dames, dirty cops, clumsy thugs and even the girl next door who still pines for our hero. Can't get more noir than this. It's so noir it's funny!

Cahill is a tough as nails hard core hard-boiled former cop accused of his wife’s brutal murder. He remains under suspicion, forced out of the SDPD, working in the restaurant he worked as a teen. A wrecked man, he’s struggling to find himself; but he still maintains his own moral code and ethics and has a gentle streak.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Noir Thriller with Heart
Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2016

A great noir mystery with crisp, terse writing and superbly controlled voice. Coyle reveals his main character's flaws as well as his strengths, giving us the picture of a man who is wounded and full of regrets, yet who still manages to be kind and, when pressed, do right by those he loves. The San Diego settings, particularly the locations in La Jolla, are so well-drawn that anyone who has been there will recognize them immediately. A dark, fast-paced read, with just enough action, pathos, and dry humor to keep us rooting for ex-cop Rick Cahill until the very end.

Ok, I had my doubts, having read other cop/PI tales centered around San Diego/So Cal good cops and bad. This one hooked me enough to go to book #2.

Yesterday’s Echo reminded me of ray chandler style novels. A Page-turner. This is the first of the Rick Cahill series. I started with Wrong Light and came back to the beginning. Can’t wait for the next book!
