Great retelling of Hoss Radbourn's 59 win season, but so much more
Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2020
Achorn does a great job telling the story of Old Hoss Radbourn's remarkable 59 win, 680+ inning season in 1884, but this book offers much more than that. It also gives insight into the baseball life and business of that era - how pitching staffs worked, how teams were constructed, the business aspects that influenced teams, the reserve clause, and the structures of the leagues.
Achorn also provides the context of life in Providence during that era - when Providence was part of the major leagues and life in that city at that time.
All in all, a great read.
