Reigning it in
Reviewed in the United States on September 10, 2019
By the end of Duel Nature, Chris is essentially a demi-god. He can match the Darkkin's greatest fighters blow for blow, he can turn ancient vampires to ash with a thought, and his Grim personality is nothing short of a machine designed to kill as efficiently as possible. He is quite simply too powerful, and Conroe seems to have realized it, as Fallen Stars is designed to reign Chris in, without removing his history.
It's nice to have the chance to see Chris on his own, away from Lydia, Nika, and Tanya for a change, and for the bulk of FS, he is accompanied by Stacia Reynolds, the werewolf he saved from George Lassiter early on in the series. Their friendship is a delight to read, and though she is tested more than once, Stacia proves herself to be a true and loyal friend. But more than anything, FS is a turning point. The next book in the series follows the POV of Declan, a young witch with a gift for technology, who is perhaps my favorite character in the series. The world of the Demon Accords is much larger than just Chris and his friends, and this is where it all begins.
