I’m a huge fan of the series. I’ve watched the three seasons numerous times. But in an online search for something ATLAB related I came across these little gems. Wow!!! I felt like I was brought back to the Avatar universe reading these. The first one, I’ll admit, was a little rough around the edges. But the nostalgia attached kept my interests piqued. I can’t wait to indulge in the rest of the series. This is such an amazing addition. I share this with my son as well who also enjoyed the series. I shared it with him when he was old enough to indulge. Both he and I finished the first three books the evening they arrived. They won’t disappoint those who enjoyed the original series.

This was pretty bad by the end. The plot line makes some of the profound parts of the show feel a little weaker, Katara is written basically just as Aangs girlfriend with none of the personality and conviction she is supposed to have. It's silly. I want to buy so I can keep supporting the franchise and seeing more stories about these beloved characters but this one was pretty meh. I was enjoying it in the beginning. I liked Ursas story at first.

A slow start, but the beginning of a great series!

This is the first issue of a great series! Off to a slow start, the drawings get better as the story goes, as well as the dialogue. As a matter of fact the second issue features many moments that seem like they come straight out of the show. If you love the series, I highly recommend these comics.

The comic series is broken up to 3 issues per storyline. I found this first storyline to be kind of like the author just getting their feet wet in the Avatar universe. The second story, The Search, is where it really starts to get good. But I still recommend the Promise just so you can be treated to Toph's Metal Bending school. It's perfect! There are also some other story elements that you might be sorry you missed if you skip ahead.

And, I know it's noted elsewhere, but the creators of the show work closely with the creation of this series as well.

Let's get this out of the way. I love the shoe. I must have watched it all the way through every year for years. So, I finally broke down and bought this first comic. I actually think this show translates to the comic medium well. The artwork is vibrant and true to the characters from the show. Some reviews stated that the dialogue was left wanting, but I thought it was fun. There are some Toph and Sokka moments that are right on point. The one gripe I had was that some panels the artwork suffered and wasn't consistent.

The Promise Part 1 is an enjoyable read for anyone who has watched Avatar the Last Air Bender. It is the first of the promise trilogy and aids the connection between the Legend of Korra and ATLA. It continues the life of Aang, Katara, Zuko, Sokka, Toph, Mai, Suki, Iroh and Ozai.
This trilogy is named the promise because of the relationship that Zuko and Aang have after the war. In his "clearest state of mind", Zuko asks the Avatar to end him should Zuko become like his father. The books revolves around this Promise. Overall, the books are very similar to the TV show. They both have similar humor and the characters look almost the same.
I found that you can read/"watch" the comics on youtube. However, I suggest that you purchase the book because no video can capture how high quality the drawings are. In my opinion, it is worth it to buy the book.
My only complaints are not large issues. Firstly, I found the book to be too short. It takes maybe 10-20 minutes to read. If it was presented on television; I believe that it might take 2 episodes to complete (30 minutes each). Although this is expected because it is an anime book, I was disappointed when it was over so quickly. Also, I didn't like the new ways Katara and Aang display affection for one another. When both of them repeatedly call each other sweetie, it is not only annoying but rather a break of character from what we used to know them to be. Also, on pg. 50 and 51 Katara states the sentence:

"Stop-trying-to-set-my-boyfriend-on-fire"

The reason I used dashes in between each word was because the writer devoted a a whole slide for one word. I found this to be a waste of space and something that I would never see Katara do in the Television series.

An interesting thing I discovered was that in the Legend of Korra, Tenzin's bison is named Oogie. I suspect this comes from Sokka repeatedly calling Aang and Katara's PDA, Oogie.

Generally, it was fun to read and had a very similar mindset to Avatar the Last Airbender.

It Has Finally Arrived

After a long war, peace should have descended. Right? Wrong. Peace does not come easy to the 4 Nations. In order to maintain balance in their world, the Fire Nation colonies based in different Nations needed to be disbanded. However, fear and anger spurred the Fire Nation colonies to fight for their homes. As the Fire Lord, Zuko has to protect his people. As the Avatar, Aang needed to achieve peace and balance. Zuko and Aang are caught in the middle of the unrest and it might push their friendship to the breaking point.

Despite hoping for a happily ever after for Aang and company, there was a lot of work to clean up the mess the last Fire Lord created. The writers picked up the plot where Season 3 ended. Amazing storytelling, with just a hint of a predictable plot, that held you riveted to the pages. It easily captured and related their trademark humor and personalities. In graphic novels, events and actions tend by misconstrued or missed but the wording and the artwork in each panel were concise and action packed. The balance of action, intrigue and especially romance was done well. Zuko and Aang got equal page time. And for the AangxKatara fans out there, they were perfectly lovey-dovey that it was "oogie" at times.

The artwork was on par with the animation from the shows. Even though only a year has past, you can see the subtle changes of the gang as they mature. The lines are clean and crisp. The colors were sharp and beautifully shaded. The quality of the pages was tight and glossy. My only gripe is the length of the comic. (That's my only reason for not giving it a strong 5 stars.) For $11, I expected a bit more than 76 pages but the enjoyment value I got out of this book was definitely worth it. If you have never watched the series, I suggest watching the show first. There are no rehashing here. If you are a fan and haven't picked it up yet, do so now at a lower price. You will not regret it.

Just a bit boring, and so short!

The story picks up during the very last episode of the animated version, and I think it's a really nice transition. However, the storyline is a bit dull after that. Everything that happens makes sense (mostly), but it just seemed off to me. The whole "sweetie" thing is cringy, but I think that will get cleared up in the rest of this little trilogy. And the worst part: It was so short!! It took me about ten-fifteen minutes to read this, which is a huge let down. Also, it $7 for each part, and maybe I'm a penny pincher, but will it be worth it to get the other books?

Granted, I'm coming from the show, so those of you who have been following the comics might say otherwise. This is my first ATLA comic.

More promising than The Promise

I've been in the Avatar fandom for a good long time, and, of course, I had jumped at the opportunity of the printed comics: The Promise, and The Search. I had been waiting for the Gaang's new adventures, and the idea of solving the mystery that is Zuko's mom, Ursa? That sounds better than finding out who Lin Beifong's dad is.

In comparison to The Promise trilogy (a sequel to the original series, a prequel to The Search), The Search, is, well, more promising. The art style is the same as the Promise: slightly rounder than the cartoon, but still easily recognized as our favorite characters. The characters seem a little more in-character. And I've always had a soft spot for Azula, our beloved crazy princess. Her prominence in this story, as well as the parallels between Zuko and Azula and Sokka and Katara, still leave me hope for the rest of this trilogy. The plot is pretty intriguing, Azula's insanity drives the story, and with a bit of imagination, it's almost like we had the old series back. But not quite.

I do miss the presence of Toph, and I still wonder if Mai will ever make another appearance. That aside, I'll keep up with this plot. The chances of actually finding out what happened to Ursa, though... That's a whole different story. We'll just have to see.

A Brilliant Start To a Great Story

As a huge fan of this series, though admittedly not until after the series had nearly ended on TV, I want to love every bit of ancillary Avatar: The Last Airbender fiction. I got so hyped for the live action movie, and was so let down. I wanted mote Avatar, more GOOD Avatar, and eventually went searching for news from the creators of the cartoon. That's when I stumbled on the existence of the comics, and I knew I had to buy them. So I gathered up old Amazon gift cards to alleviate the strain on my wallet, and bought The Promise and the first two parts of The Search (part three was not published yet) all at once, and I am so glad that I did. The art is beautiful, and the story so immediately captures the tone and pace of the cartoon that before long it was like watching the show again, which was in turn like revisiting an old friend.

As for this particular installment, it is a fantastic beginning to a story that, as an Avatar fan, I felt genuinely NEEDED to be told. The decision to include the antagonistic Azula in the party for this adventure was a stroke of genius (she's my favorite character) as this is the closest that the protagonists and she have ever come to having common goals. All in all, I could not be happier that I own this, and re-read it as regularly as I re-watch episodes of the show.

A Wonderful Continuation of an Amazing Series

I am a die-hard fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender. So I was thrilled when I head about this continuation graphic novel series, and preordered it immediatly. Let me just say, it does not dissappoint. Everything we love about the series is there - the humor, the story, the incredible characters. And it picks up immediatly after we left off in season 3, even giving flashbacks to scenes I know I loved the first time. It's great! Just what the series needs!
The thing to keep in mind, though, is that this is a SHORT book. The content in it is probably worth about one episode of show-time. It's not a full-length graphic novel, and you will have to keep buying the next volumes to complete the story. I'm personally okay with this. I'm excited for the next book, and I will be preordering that as well so I can read it ASAP. But don't expect a full story in just this volume. Expect an episode.
If you're a fan of the series, you have to know what happens next. This is the book to start it, definitely a must-have. But, here's hoping they animate this story as well. That would pretty much make my life complete. (Korra 2012! Whoo!)
