5.0 out of 5 starsAdding my praise, but also a warning

Like most other people in here I also loved this book. When it was published it was really a delightful and unexpected surprise. Blood song really just have so much going for it. Interesting plot, intriguing characters, a fresh magic system... I mean, this was the full package! There is no reason in the world not to pick up this book, I promise you that it will pull you in and never let go! Years down the line I still think about it some times, but here comes the warning. The later books in the series is a HUUUUUUGE letdown. This book was self published, and it kind of feels like Blood song had the plot of three books in one, if the book had been expanded and divided into three books it might have delivered more on the promise given. It seems to me that when the book was published as one book the author had to make up two new books with new plot twists and it completely belly floppet. Read the first book, imagine what it could have been, mourn it and move on. Even though the later books in the series do not deliver, you owe it to yourself not to loose out on the magic of the first.

3.0 out of 5 starsThe first half is great
Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2019
I love the premise--how these young boys are trained and have to complete tests to become a part of the Sixth Order, the warriors of the Realm. The descriptions of the Order House, the masters, the aspects, and Vaelin's fellow "brothers" are so interesting. Some of the characters are multi-layered. The King--Janus is dimensional. I loved seeing how his crafty mind worked.
About 60% in to the book is when it started to become chaotic. The editing seemed to take a back seat, the time periods were untidy, narration was hit and miss, and the war and battle sequences were often confusing with so many new names of characters, cities, faiths, it was hard to read. It was like a Game of Thrones ambition that fell far short.
Some parts of the story were given lots of detail and other parts--important parts--were skimmed over. For example, the five years Vaelin spent in prison. Then when he has his battle with the Shield, it's over almost before it begins. It really feels like there are two books here, and the second one is still in the draft stage.
When I was reading the first half of this book, I was excited to have discovered a new series that was well written and fun to read. Now that I've finished the book, I know I won't be reading any more of these.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tremendous Epic Fantasy

Recently re-read this so I could read book 2.

This is definitely within my top favorite books. I love everything about it. The concept of the blood song, the characters - especially Vaelin - the sweeping plot lines...I could go on and on. The world Anthony Ryan has built is epic. What I find most interesting is all the different religions and how they are all handled. It was just really interesting to watch how a belief system basically based on dead ancestors so influenced the characters and their way of life.

Vaelin is actually one of my favorite protagonists, and one of the best I've come across in a while. He's not a "golden child" hero, but he's not an anti-hero either. He's not good at everything, but he kicks butt anyway. His "blood song" is fascinating and I need way more answers than you get in this book. I love the way the book is structured as him telling his story to a master historian.

I really love this book. Recommended if you like gritty epic fantasy.

Content warning:
Language. There's a lot of it scattered throughout. A couple uses of the F bomb.
Sex. No graphic or explicit scenes. It's mentioned that a couple has sex but it's more of a "fade to black" type thing. There's a few other mentions throughout.
Violence. Vaelin grows up in a battle-school. The whole book revolves around his learning to fight and then his multiple campaigns, but the descriptions aren't graphic.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review of the entire trilogy.

Book one was pretty good. A new world, hints of a unique universe/death/magic system. Interesting characters, a bit of a coming of age tale. Nice story. Book two, more of the same. Three to four stars for these first two books. Readable, with only some small consistency flaws. Big build up to the battle, long battle and it's over the second hero man shows up, that was kind of an easy battle! type stuff.

Book three, ugh. Badly needed an editor. Trying not to give away a spoiler, I was initially pleased the main character became more self reliant, but then a plot device came along that took that away as well. New boring characters were introduced late in the book, with elaborate back stories that didn't advance the plot, just new people, we don't really care about, and won't be with us for long anyway. Why? The character PoV switched every chapter, even when not a whole lot of interesting things were happening, in that part of the world. At best you're getting tiny bits of interesting "this is a clue to how the universe works" but hidden within the slog of boring. I just wanted it to be over.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the best epic fantasy I'll read all year

I haven't read an epic fantasy as enjoyable as Blood Song in a long time. Fans of Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind should like this, but *gasp* I actually thought this was better because of its tighter plot. The world building was slow but deliberate, and the delivery hooked me almost immediately. While I usually read books very fast, I wanted to read this slowly and savor every word because stories this good are so rare.

Blood Song starts with a historian who wants to record the life story of Vaelin Al Sorna, the Hope Killer and now Imperial prisoner. Once Vaelin's story began, I was enthralled. After his mother's death, his father deposits ten-year old Vaelin at the gates of the Sixth Order to train and live out the rest of his life as a warrior of the Faith. While initially stung at his father's easy disposal of him, he quickly adapts to his environment and excels in his training, bonding easily with other boys.

I enjoy stories that start with characters in their youth. Vaelin's friendship with his "brothers" of the Sixth Order is built based on mutual trust and dependence on each other to succeed. But this isn't just Vaelin's story. The supporting characters are multi-layered and add much to the plot.

It's easy to see early on that Vaelin is destined for leadership. But what's not immediately discernible is that Vaelin's destiny is not necessarily played out as planned.

This book has it all - rich characters, an interesting and exciting plot, battles, and intrigue. This is going on my favorites list and probably will be the best fantasy I'll read all year.

This book will be hard to follow. Everything about it is so real; from the brutal upbringing of soon to be soldiers to the duplicity and casual disregard of so many of those in power, as always.

To bonds formed between children thrust into a world never imagined and inescapable. And to the battlefields, both physical and emotional.

There is , however, love and loyalty and a chilling knowledge of the inescapable, to selfless sacrifice.

Not for a moment will you feel you know what is next occurring. Not for a moment do you want to be inattentive.

This story is mind blowing and monumental. So intricate but so compelling. Can’t find enough words to describe it.

This Series is so hard to review...So Many Great Things Happened....Just Read It.

Bloodsong is the journey of a boy into becoming a man with enough power to change the world. The majority of this books focuses on the bond built between brothers, bonds that can’t be broken no matter what you have done. It is hard to capture Bloodsong accurately in a review because it has a fully built world, characters and plot. Small mysteries and journeys lead to larger ones. The choices that Vaelin makes throughout his life are not all correct. He makes mistakes and sacrifices along the way and there were enough twists and turns that I was kept guessing the entire book.

Vaelin is the son of a famous Warrior and healer. After the death of his mother Vaelin is taken to train with the Order where he gives up all ties to his family and land to become a brother of the 6th order and protector of the faith.

-- The Aspect’s gaze was impassive but Vaelin knew he could read every thought in his boy’s head. He wondered later how many boys, dragged or tricked there by treacherous fathers, did run away, and if so, if they ever regretted it. Loyalty is our strength. “I wish to come in, please,” he told the Aspect. There were tears in his eyes but he blinked them away. “I wish to learn many things.”

Vaelin’s journey in the order is a difficult one they are training warriors and he is an apt pupil, living through all the trails along the way. Never once did I question the man that Vaelin grew up to be because I journeyed through those years with him when he built bonds with his brothers in the Order and learned that the reasons he was brought to them might not be everything he thought they were. As every new layer is peeled away we see that maybe there is something dark lurking and waiting in the shadows as Vaelin has a destiny and there are some that do not want to see him make his way to it.

Beral Shak Ur…”why do you call me that? I have a name of my own.”
“Men such as yourself tend to collect names like trophies. Not all the names you’ll earn will be so kind.”

There are so many things I liked about this story.

First, it is told from the Present looking back on the past for most of it and as Vaelin tells his story you can’t wait to find out what happened to put him in the position he is in in the present. The narration escalated the intrigue over certain events by knowing the part of the end result.

Second the world building is completely full and well-rounded with lands, religions, politics and so many meshed up cultures that it is hard not to get too caught up in all the details of it. The extra stories and lore all fit in and weave together so well.

Third, there is a slight magic in tale, but I never found it overdone. There is a gradual realization of it instead of an abrupt “you have power and will rule the world muh-HA-Ha-ha-hA”. I really liked the hint of magic in the land and the promise of finding out more in later books.

Finally, I loved the relationships that Vaelin had with those around him. The bonds between the brothers, the girl he loved and the very dangerous game he played with the King made him an extraordinarily easy character to like. He was never pompous or overconfident but made his choices and went on with them.

I grew to really care for the characters in this world. Some of the scenes of war are a little horrific, but I think they should be. The story was complex, interesting and had enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. I strongly recommend this to any Fantasy lover.

5.0 out of 5 stars A captivating universe, full of promise

I like a lot the premise of virtually invincible foes for the hero - (spoiler alert) how do you get rid of a soul once and for all if it refuses to stay dead and insists on hijacking a body every so often? The Blood Song sure seems an excellent weapon to have against such fiendish adversaries.

I like how the hero is put together - a tenacious core, with veins of compassion, and growing wisdom. I also like the writing style - simple, direct, flowing the story fluidly. Came across only a handful of typos (like "pouring" instead of "poring"), and a few small grammar hiccups - eminently forgivable.

We're left with a few puzzles, like why the Seventh Order would want Vaelin dead early on - unless they somehow thought he'd unravel them altogether. Is there anything one could do to help a grief-mad widow overcome her insatiable need for vengeance and become acquainted with forgiveness, or is it inevitable that she'll join in with the One Who Waits crowd? And are there some benevolent-style Departed, or only vile, vicious, vindictive, power-hungry destructive types?

We also get our appetite whetted for many more potential adventures - a promise for more on the Raven's Shadow legend and the Northern Reaches connection, more details on the Nameless and associated Mysteries, the story of the Queen of Fire, and (hopefully) figuring out how to reach and combat effectively the seemingly impregnable master puppeteer that runs the gang of malicious Departed.

Overall, beautifully done, I cannot recommend this book highly enough - and I strongly suspect the sequels will be just as good if not even better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly impressed.

Wow. Completely fell in love with this book. The pacing was great, even, and kept drawing me in with each piece of the adventure. The main characters were relatable, each very intriguing with his own back story; the plot was intriguing and fresh; and the world the author built was well detailed, VERY well detailed, something you don't always see with these kinds of novels. But he took his time to set up this world, and it shows, from the geographical makeup of his world to the Faith that the Orders follow within it. Additionally: This is a LONG book. I loved that, because I love to just keep reading for hours and hours if it's a great book, which for me this was. The length didn't seem daunting at all in the face of such lush writing.

Negatives: there were some grammatical issues, some sentence structures that could've been easily fixed. Also, there were certain scenes in which it seemed like perhaps there was a sentence or thought missing, almost as if the author had gotten ahead of himself in writing that passage. But honestly, the story is so good that these things were easy to overlook. They might trip you up for a second but the pull of the story is good enough to overcome them.

This book is so good I'm just stunned. Just finished and wanted to write the review immediately. Thank goodness the story will continue, and although the next one is not out yet I don't care. I need time to think about what I've just read. It's overwhelming.

While looking for something new and good to read, I saw that this book had five stars even though there were 657 reviews. Even LOTR isn't that highly rated! Then I read the synopsis and saw that the recommendation for the book was written by none other than Michael J. Sullivan, author of the incomparable Riyria Revelations trilogy, the best epic fantasy I've read in years. That clinched it for me. And now I'm done with this amazing book that is a masterpiece of the genre.

The good news is that Anthony Ryan says he's quit his day job to write full time. The other good news is that he's done with book two so it won't be long to wait. In the meantime I'm starting on his other book, part three of which is available on Amazon, check his author's page.

Thank you very much for this book, Anthony. As Michael Sullivan says, you are truly a master storyteller.
