5.0 out of 5 starsA brilliant introduction to a world with gargoyles and demons
Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2022
Bitter Sweet Love is an enticing introduction to the Dark Elements world. This short prequel focuses on Dez and Jasmine, which we will see again as secondary characters of the three books that follow.

After being gone for three years, Dez is back to claim the love of his life or, as it's a tradition in the warden community, to be mated. They grew up together and had feelings for each other, and just as Jasmine's dad announced that they would mate, he disappeared. And she hasn't been able to get over it, much less to forgive him for breaking her heart. She has seven days to give him a final answer but, before doing so, she demands him to meet some conditions.

It's swoony the way Dez will give everything to make Jas happy. He is very much protective of her, as every warden is of the women. And he is hot and charming, and so very alpha with a huge heart. Jasmine is fierce yet centered, and will quickly discover that love doesn't fade nor goes away. They are so amazing together, that I found myself devouring their story.

Who would have thought that I would be swooning over gargoyles and demons? The world Jennifer L. Armentrout created is addictive and captivating. I can't recommend this series enough.

3.0 out of 5 starsBitter Sweet Love
Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2015
Bitter Sweet Love was a nice introduction to the series. We get a bit of background on the current state of the world. The most important bit being that gargoyles are no longer the things of legend. Humans now know about them, and are living among them. They're not exactly accepted by everyone, but they're not secrets any longer. There's also quite a bit about the gargoyle mating system and their culture in general. It's another one of those "sexist for your own good" type of societies, where women aren't allowed to do anything except choose if they mate or not. It's nothing too original, but I'm liking the gargoyles as a species. They're interesting.

Bitter Sweet Love also has a brief introduction to Layla, who is the main character of the series. She's unusual even among her kind and isn't welcome or accepted because she's half demon. She can also steal souls, which obviously no one wants to have done to them! It's not like she's going around threatening anyone, and she has to be close enough to kiss in order to even do it, but that doesn't stop anyone from being afraid of her. Even Jasmine was standoffish with her at first until she got to her know her. All in all, I think this was a good short story that packed in a lot of information that I'm happy to have known before going into the first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Start to The Dark Elements Series!

I loved this beginning prequel to Dark Elements Series by Jennifer L Armentrout. As usual with this author you get a great plot, wonderful dialog, and a sense of humor to go along with it! I read this book and can't wait to get started on the next one.

Jasmine is a young woman who loves to fly, even though her father would be horrified if he knew it! Jasmine's father is the leader of the New York group of Wardens and Jasmine is learning just what that means.

When she was younger, her father brought home an orphaned boy, Dez, of the California clan that had been wiped out, and at first he would not respond to anyone, until he responded to Jasmine. Together they have grown up. Her father states that they are to be mated and Jasmine is beyond thrilled. That is until the next morning when he gets up and Dez is gone, with no word or explanation. Beyond hurt, she lives without Dez, wondering why he left and if he did not want to be with her.

Three years later, Dez returns, and he has asked Jasmine's father for Jasmine's hand in marriage. According to their law, Jasmine has the right to say yes or no, and has one week to decide. Of course she is mad and has no plan on getting mated until she knows the truth of where Dez went, and why he did not tell her he was going.

Read on and find out what happens! I know you will love this prequel, an I loved how Jasmine exasperates Dez, and what he has to do to get her to say yes, or does she say no?

I gave this book 5 glittering stars! Now on to book one, White Hot Kiss!

Bitter Sweet Love is the prequel to the Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. This prequel didn’t take long to read. It briefly goes into the world that Jennifer has created for this series, including gargoyles and demons.

Storyline/My Thoughts: I’ve read previous books from Jennifer, but I couldn’t wait to dive into this one due to the paranormal creatures that were in it. First, we have shifters that shift into gargoyles, and they go after demons. We have all kinds of demons that wreak havoc in the world. The gargoyles have to deal with sending the demons back to where they come from daily. In the meantime, the female gargoyles have to stay hidden and not be part of hunting dangers. In the case of Jasmine, she wants to explore more and not be locked away. Her one true love/best friend, Des, left her three years ago and now is back to claim her as his mate. Unfortunately, she’s not going to make it easy for him. She makes conditions to him before she makes her decision, and some of those decisions put her in harm’s way.

I could tell right away that Des still loved Jasmine, but it would take a lot of groveling to make up for the time he left. Des didn’t want to tell Jasmine right away why he left, but I could understand why he was hesitant to say to her when he did. Jasmine drove me crazy with the conditions she made for Des to decide if she would mate with him. After a while, it became predictable what she was going to choose.

I did like being introduced to some of the secondary characters in this book that will be the main characters in the next book. I couldn’t wait to read the rest of the series now, especially after being introduced to a particular demon.

This prequel receives four stars from me, and the only reason it didn’t get five stars was Jasmine and how she treated Des and how she treated a specific young character. I didn’t particularly appreciate how she treated this young character. I don’t want to give away the person, but she does get to be the series’s main character. Jasmine was very judgmental, and she realized it after she got to know the character. I liked how Jasmine finally realized how much Des cared for her, but she could’ve not put Des through so much trouble. She could have also listened to him, and she would not have got hurt. Overall, this prequel was a great start introducing the series.

Standalone or Part of Series: It’s a prequel to the Dark Elements series, but can be read as a standalone.

HEA: Yes

Trope: Arrange Relationship/Marriage/Mating; Friends-to-Lovers;

Would I recommend this book? Yes. I recommend this book to Young Adult Paranormal/Fantasy readers out there. If you enjoy Jennifer L. Armentrout’s other paranormal books, then you’ll enjoy this series.

𝗥𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: ☆☆☆☆ 4/5

This was my first introduction into the world that is Dark Elements and it immediately grabbed my attention. What I liked most about this book, is this world that JLA created! I’ve never read a book about gargoyles and I already fell in love with this new world. I liked the story of Jasmine and Dez, it was a bit short, but that was not surprising since this is a prequel novella. Even though it was short, I could really feel the connection between Jasmine and Dez and I just love it. This was such a nice second chance paranormal romance whilst also being this kick ass introduction to a new world! I am excited for the rest of this series!!

“I loved you the night you brought me pudding and stayed with me until I fell asleep. That was eleven years ago and my love for you have never faded. Not for one second.”

Bitter Sweet Love by Jennifer Armentrout is a prequel novella to her Dark Elements series. This world that JLA created is full of mystery, suspense, and a love story between two Gargoyle Wardens.

Jasmine and Dez have been friends since they were young. Where one goes the other follows.

They share a bond that can’t be broken..... or so they thought.

One night Dez disappears, and is never seen again. Leaving Jasmine’s heart in shatters.

Years pass and Dez is back, and wants to be more than just friends with Jasmine..... a mate. But her heart is still broken for what he did, and is not so willing to forgive.

So she gives him seven days to convince her why hey should be together.

The tension between these two was fantastic. Dez’s love for Jasmine was so heartwarming, and him ownimg up to his mistakes...... gah I wish he was mine.

A fantastic start to this series, that I can’t wait to read Layla and Zayne’s story next.

I liked this story. Jasmine is feisty and independent. I really like her sister Danika too. I felt terrible for Jasmine that the man she loved went away. Then surprise, surprise Dex, the man she has loved for years is back but she isn’t happy, she is hurt and she lets him know it. So Dex sets out to win back her trust and her love. I would love more about this couple. It was only leading up to the next books about Zayne and Layla that I don’t think I will read because I hate a love triangle.

This is one of those novellas that I can read over and over and still love just as much as the full-length novels from the series. I know I can always count on JLA to get me out of a book slump. This novel did exactly what a prequel novella is supposed to do: pull you in to a new world, give you just enough background info to get the gist of the setting, introduce you to the main characters without giving too much away, and make you excited for the rest of the series. I was completely enthralled by Jas and Dez's story and fell in love with them both instantly. My only negative: I wanted more!! Great start to what I know will be a heart-wrenching series, and I can't wait to continue.

3.5 stars Who wouldn’t want to have wings to fly anywhere they wanted-as long as their dad didn’t find out? Jasmine is a gargoyle warden, and lives with her dad and sister. She spends her time flying whenever she can now that her home schooling is over. She has loved Dez since the day her family took him in at age ten, after he loses his family horrifically. So when he leaves her when he’s eighteen, never to be heard of again, she is devastated. She was fifteen at the time and now it’s three years later. When Dez shows back up and is ready to mate with her, Jasmine is completely surprised, and caught off guard to say the least. Due to their tradition, she has seven days to say yes. This is the story of what happens when she gives him her wish list of experiences she wants to have during the seven days, and it’s up to him to fulfill them.

Jasmine is seventeen, beautiful, has been completely sheltered all her life, and has never traveled anywhere. Dez is a super hot guy-one that makes all the women’s head turn wherever he goes. He’s also a really sweet guy that loves Jasmine, and he does have his reasons why he disappeared.

For such a short read, this was full of world building. In this world, demons live among clueless humans, and gargoyle wardens are tasked with killing them. Jasmine’s mom was killed by a demon when she was a child, and Dez’s family was wiped out by demons. The author’s vision of demons was unique. There’s all different kinds of them, and they show up when you least expect them. Since demon hunting is one of the items on Jasmine’s wish list, this goes a long way towards checking this off her list.

During the seven days, the pair travel to several places. When they visit D.C., they meet a demon/human hybrid named Layla. She is a rarity, and can easily steal their souls-if she gets close enough to kiss. This was the introduction to the main character of book one of this series, White Hot Kiss, and just made me want to read it more.

Since it was a novella, it was an extremely fast read, and set up the world for the series. I enjoyed the characters, and the descriptions of the demons the pair meets. The romance was sweet, and the characters fairly well developed. I think if the story had been bit longer, there could have been a lot more fleshing out of the characters. Also, although we find out why Dez left, I was wishing for more of a story of what happened to him after he left Jasmine. While it’s explained why he left without telling her, I think it needed a better reason for not getting in touch for three years. So yes, that’s the part of the read that bothered me.

I do already own White Hot Kiss, and plan to read it hopefully soon. I bought it because Jennifer Armentrout wrote one of my favorite series, The Lux Series, and I wanted to read another by her. While this didn’t really come close to being as good as Lux, I am hoping the rest of the series lives up to it.(RabidReads.com)

Avg. Good Reads Rating: 4.34

Series: The Dark Elements #0.5

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Pages: 105

Check it out: Good Reads | Barnes and Noble | Amazon

Good Reads Summary:

Dez wasn't just Jasmine's crush. A gargoyle Warden like Jas, he helped her come to terms with her destiny—fending off demons and maintaining balance between good and evil. He was her everything...right until the moment he disappeared without a trace. It didn't help that Jas's father had just announced that she and Dez would one day be mated. Hard not to take that personally.

And now he's back, three years older, ten times hotter, ready to pick up exactly where they left off. But Jas isn't taking that risk again. Dez has seven days to meet all her conditions and earn back her trust. Seven days filled with terrifying danger and sweet temptation. Seven days to win her heart—or shatter it all over again...

My reaction when I found out JLA was starting a new YA Paranormal series:

Now, this is a prequel novella, so it’s not the same main characters as the first book of the series, but you definitely meet them, and that was fun. I really enjoyed this book, as I do with all of JLA’s books. After reading this novella, this is sure to be another wildly successful YA series, that fans of the recently concluded Covenant Series and the soon to be concluded Lux Series will ravenously devour.

If you’re looking for your next fix of sweet yet sexy paranormal romance, look no further. We enter the story when Dez returns after three years of being gone. He and Jasmine already had a relationship. But he broke her heart and didn’t tell her why he was leaving, so she gave up on him. Let’s just say they don’t spend a lot of time getting to know each other since they already have history. And it’s not insta-love either. Dez has seven days to woo Jasmine, lest she turn him down, and lets just say that boy knows how to woo.

There’s some action as well, seeing how there’s a war going on or at least brewing between the Wardens and demons. We didn’t get a ton of information on that, but I’m assuming that will be very clearly explored in the first book, White Hot Kiss. I know, all these titles sound like straight romance novels. I’m sure there will be plenty of that, but knowing JLA, there will be lots of action and fantasy elements as well.

This is a quick read (only about 100 pages). Very well written. If you’re a fan of JLA, you’ve probably already read it and loved it. She never seems to disappoint, and Bitter Sweet Love is a great introduction to a new world that I’m sure will be just as popular as her previous works.

Originally posted on my blog: Tangled Up In Books

--"You will be mated in seven days."

I haven't read any of the blurbs for any of these books yet. If it's a book written by Jennifer L. Armentrout I just buy it no questions asked because she's golden that way. All I knew from following her posts was that it was going to be about gargoyles. I couldn't help but think about how very different that would be and was excited to see how she'd pull that off. Not that I was worried I love everything she writes and she got me to fall in love with a cocky alien for crying out loud! But I had assumed Layla would be human (wrong) and maybe either Zayne or Roth would be as well while the other was a gargoyle (half wrong). So there was a lot that surprised me with this story in the best ways of course. In fact it has me even more excited to get into this series and I already have a few theories. (Don't worry about those I'm generally wrong 98% of the time with my theories!)

--"Nothing in this world is stronger than love. It should always be enough, no matter what."

Dez and Jasmine's story sucked me in immediately. I loved Jasmine and her thirst for freedom and how she's even a bit reckless even though she seems to have everything under control. I liked the way she thought when it came to Dez coming back into her life, don't get me wrong I had my fingers crossed the whole time hoping she'd crack and say yes (once you read it you'll understand better). But still deep down I didn't want her to just give in. Dez had me so intrigued. He was very mysterious and sexy. It drove me crazy not knowing his secrets in the beginning!

--"Herbert bit me."

As with every single one of her books, JLA has this brilliant sense of humor that shines through her writing. I always seem to find myself laughing out loud whenever I read one of her books, and do it often.

--"I'm in this for the long haul."

This book really is bittersweet because while it was a huge slice of perfection, I easily became attached to Dez and Jasmine and they aren't the focus of the series. Though while my heart is a little sad over that and will miss being inside Jasmine's head, I did get to see a brief glimpse of a younger Layla and Zayne and that had me really excited to get into their story. Layla had a piece of my heart from the first moment she meets Jasmine and I felt that hurt twinge because of it. As did Zayne. The way he stood up for her was so swoon worthy. Roth has a lot of work to do if he's going to have any sort of chance to sway me in his direction. The bad boys usually do it for me but I'm not that impressed yet. Intrigued? Yes. Impressed? No. So far...it's Team Zayne for me. Let's see what the next two books have in store. Will I change my mind? Hmm...
