I want a snake tattoo. Now.

Seriously, look me in the eye and try to tell you don't want a familial after reading this book.

Jennifer L. Armentrout is growing on me as an author. Her books are never 'the best' (as in Throne of Glass Level), but she does write some of the better (if not the best) entertaining books.

She has this ability to make a series grow on you, more than I ever know possible. I felt the same way too when I was reading the Lux series. It's like it always starts off as another good, entertaining romance book, but as it progresses, you start to realize that you're enjoying it more and more, and before you know it you had already bought the entire series and listed in the top 5 best hate-love relationships I have ever seen.

Speaking of which, if you're a reader who finished the Lux series, really enjoyed it, and is desperately looking for another series that is like it, I strongly suggest this book (series). You will not disappoint.

Our main character, Layla, is a hybrid half-breed. An abomination. She is half-warden, half demon. A combination that is actually impossible because the two breeds really hate each other, no less mate.

We see how she struggles with her identity, and how she suffers the discrimination from her clan members and those who is the closest that she has to family. And how it pains her that she would never fit in either, because she's half in both.

In this book, I personally like Zayne better than Roth as a character. Roth is...not that well written actually. I don't know how to describe it. Astaroth, crown prince of hell, is a little bit of a disappointment. He didn't live up the hate/love relationship like I imagined (because he kept arrogantly trying to hit on Layla), but that also makes him the idea second-guy. But I see room for improvement, and hopefully in the next book I'll like him more. And we didn't get to see much (if not none) of any scenes where we get a glimpse into his true self. Remember: it's the rare depth of emotions that we see from these second guys that get us to fall in love with them in the first place. Hopefully, Jennifer will put more of these scenes in the next installment.

However, despite the slight disappointment I felt with Roth, both Roth and Zayne were well-written and likable enough that I find myself into a soon-to-be-really-severe-case of a triangle love. But currently, since it is literally not possible for Layla to kiss Zayne without sucking out his soul, I'm intrigued to see how Jennifer's going to pull that relationship out.

I also really loved Layla. Again, Jennifer has proved herself again and gain how she is really good at mastering the creation of kick-ass heroines which sassy-as-hell is there middle name. She can fight, she's independent and strong, and most importantly: she knows when to spare a life and when not to, basically, not overly soft to the point that she's annoying. The characters all felt real; even Roth's arrogance and dickishness are realistic (and attractive).

I really, really liked this book. I feel like if I paid for it, I wouldn't be exactly disappointed. The love-relationships are very enjoyable, and for fans of second-guy romances, this is the series to go for you. Although it's choose-the-second-guy romance, and not that much on the hate/love relationship, I still urge fans of the Lux series to check out this book. We all know Jennifer's writing style, so if you enjoyed her other books, you'll definitely love this one too.

3.0 out of 5 starsInteresting and Improving
Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2022
When I first started reading i had a bit of issue with the writing style. There was a lot of passive voice and telling instead of showing, I'm not sure if it improved or if I just stopped noticing, I'm going to assume it improved.

This story follows a teenage girl who is currently in high school. She has never been kissed because she is essentially a succubai (spelling?) without the fun parts. She is thus way because she is half demon. Her other half is something called a warden, they are the demon hunters of the world. As you can assume she is raised by one of those species and gets drawn into an unconventional relationship with an individual of her other halves species. Chaos ensues, lives are crossed, and feelings are hurt. Oh, she's also the only one of her kind and the fate of mankind depends on her actions and "virtues".

It wasn't a bad read, pretty easy and has several comedic pop culture references that made me smile. I don't think I will be reading the next but it looks like they are stand-alones in the same universe.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wardens, and Demons, and Secrets! Oh, my!

An interesting start to a new series. Though the book comes across as formulaic and stereotypical of the genre, I still found myself drawn in to this word of Wardens (Gargoyles) and Demons.

White Hot Kiss, the first installment of Armentrout's The Dark Elements series, focuses on Layla, a teenage girl who is half Warden and half demon. She knows nothing of her past - who her parents are, or why they abandoned her. Taken in by the Wardens as a young girl, Layla assists them in their war against the demons by using her "gifts". Layla, though living with the Wardens, and stifling her demon heritage, feels like she does not really fit in. When she meets Roth, a demon who seems to know a lot about her past and who she really is, Layla begins to question everything she has been taught to believe.

There is what some may consider a love triangle of sorts in this book. But I don't see it that way. I think there has to be more active pursuit by all parties involved for it to be a true love triangle. Instead, there is one teenage girl trying to process and come to terms with her own feelings regarding two very different males. One, a gargoyle, has always held a special place in her heart and represents "home" (dare I call it hero worship?); the other, a demon, sets her pulse to racing, muddles her brain, and represents everything she has been taught to hate and judge (by the Wardens).

If I am being completely honest here - based on this book alone - I am a Roth fan over Zayne. I found Zayne to be a confusing character. I struggled to really understand his motivation and his behavior. At times, he comes across as condescending and childish in his treatment of Layla; while at other times, I got the sense that he is struggling with his own inner demons and turmoil. Does he feel more for Layla than brotherly love and friendship? Does he want to buck the system and tradition, or will he bow to the will of his father? I just do not know. Maybe Book 2 will answer some of the many questions I still have!

Overall, I enjoyed the story, but I would have liked more focus on who the Wardens really are, and some more action involving them in their true form - maybe more encounters between them and the demons? I know this story is from Layla's POV, but I think this would have heightened the reading experience.

I'm shook. Again, JLA has written another book boyfriend for me and I'm assuming every other person who's breathing. My beautiful and sarcastic, and very freaking hot Crown Prince of Hell. Satan's favorite and mine too. Here's the thing. I'm old. Not ancient old but still, this is YA and you would think that I would be bored while reading this but oh no, I'm gobbling it up like I've been starved of literature and this is the only book left in the world. I mean this book has Gargoyles and Demons and familiars and stuff and I'm so hooked that I don't know what to do now that I've finished. JLA is a master of writing all types of supernatural beings. You don't believe me? Seriously, go thru her back log and see for yourself. The woman can literally write about anything and make you love it. There are parts of this book where I really wanted to jump in and slap someone. Our poor little mix breed Layla was being treated like a red headed step child which she believed with all her heart she deserved. It was so hard at times seeing her treated this way. I could not stand Petr and Paimon while kinda funny, was creepy as hell! Also, I know many of you will be Zayne fans but I'm very meh about him. He's just to self absorbed for me. Roth on the other hand was perfection! All I know is I need a big snake tattoo now and I'm calling her Bambi! My heart broke towards the end of this and it better be repaired in the next one.

Ok y'all. Do not be dissuaded by the YA language or the McDonald's scene at the very beginning of the book (trust me). After read this book, I'm very blessed to share that I have a new book boyfriend. I know, I know... its a big deal. This book is all things that are great about YA low fantasy. I'm also convinced that @jennifer_l_armentrout can write some bad ass females and delicious male characters after staring my second series by her. Consider this a JLA fan account— it is quite literally a JLA review account now since my next several posts will be JLA reviews because she’s all I want to read. (FAIR WARNING)
Needless to say, “White Hot Kiss” has great fantasy system building, characters you want to call friends, and ends with the ultimate cliffhanger. Go read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars My first-ever fantasy book, and it was amazing!

Who would have thought that I was going to enjoy so much my first ever fantasy book? Not me. But Jennifer L. Armentrout's brilliant writing and marvelous plotting engulfed my attention with White Hot Kiss, the first book in The Dark Elements series.

The world she created is simply fascinating: wardens, who are truly gargoyles and live on earth to keep the demons at bay, demons who live among humans, alphas who rule... And the main characters couldn't be any more interesting. Layla is half-warden and half-demon, and she is struggling to find her place. She was raised by wardens and grew up with Zayne, who sees her as a little sister. Except, she has a massive crush on him. And then, there is Roth. Swoony, impossible not-to-fall-in-love-with Roth. A good-looking, tattooed, cocky new classmate who turns out to be an upper-level demon and constantly challenges Layla. He could compromise her relationship with her family, making her question everything she has ever known.

I was mindblown by the themes interweaved in the story. Because aside from the good and evil balance, the book poses questions about free will, millenary beliefs, and doing the right thing even when people would deem it wrong. And the writing is sublime. Favorite phrase? "I lost myself the moment I found you." All the power in that one sentence.

I know I'm late to the party by several years. But know that I've tried Jennifer L. Armentrout's stories, I don't plan on stopping!

I want to start by saying I read a few of Jennifer L Armentrout's books when I was younger and while I remember liking them I did not fall head over obsessed like I normally do. So through the years I would add her books to my tbr but never got around to reading them. What a mistake that was.

After reading her newest series From Blood and Ash I decided that I must've not only been young but also didn't know what good writing was because I am kicking myself for waiting so long for traveling down the road that is JLAs writing.

In the last few weeks I've been binge reading a few of her series. So far I have to say the Dark Elements series is my favorite! White Hot Kiss is a phenomenal start to a spectacular dark and lush series! I noticed a few reviews mention that JLAs writing is formulamatic and while I agree with that assessment I like her writing style because of that. She gives us what we love in a unique way. This series follows a formula of different paranormal creatures who think they are the better race and this of course leads to fighting. This is where the formula ends for me. JLA takes your standard YA paranormal trope and adds her own twists. Here we have Gargoyles vs Demons. Gargoyles act as wardens who protect the human race from discovering the exhistance of paranormal creatures. Enter in our heroine, Layla, an aspiring warden who just wants to live her live and help the world stay peaceful. Layla isn't your typical warden though, she is half gargoyle and half human. Her powers are limited. She doesn't have the skill sets of a full warden which makes her more of a liability and outcast among the wardens. She is raised with the belief all demons are evil and spends her days tagging demons so the wardens can find them later, and pining after the boy she grew up with Zayne. Of course there's a small hitch to pining after boy, not only can she tag demons she can also kiss anyone and steal their soul.

Enter in Roth. (Please note my review is going to be a bit biased for Roth as he's my boy haha) Roth is a demon who saves Layla when she is in danger one night. Because of how she was raised she instantly distrusts Roth. Roth is a deliciously dark character. He does what he wants when he wants and stands up for what he believes in. One thing about Demons is they do not have a soul for Layla to steal. Wrapped up in the Roth and Layla dynamic is the simple fact that if they end up together she can have a full relationship with him and she won't run the risk of killing him with her kiss. Did I mention I am team Roth???

I'm not normally a fan of a love triangle but I love the dynamic between Zayne, Layla, and Roth. One offers love, friendship, longing, and the familiar; the other offers love, and the unknown. No one knows who is going to win her heart but it sure is fun to guess. Will she choose the boy she's always known or will she learn to trust the unknown?

TL;DR
overall rating- 4 Stars
steam level- 3
love triangle- yes
recommend- YES!!!!!!!!!!

Angels. Demons. Gargoyles. Add in a half-breed who doesn't fit anywhere caught between Zayne, an unrequited love, and Roth, a sexy demon prince to muddle everything, and you've got a wild ride of a story.

Layla is half-demon, half-Warden, or gargoyles as dubbed by humans after coming out to the public as defenders of humanity. With no real place, no certain future, and a whole lot of sass, she finds herself the target of demon attacks with no idea why. When a sexy upper level demon rescues her from an attack, they begin a partnership (with lots of sexual tension) to figure out the demon behind the attacks while trying to keep her Warden family out of it and, in her mind, safe. Things don't go as planned, Layla looks like a traitor, and Roth proves that not all demons are the same. If they fail, untold evil will be released on the earth and the apocalypse will begin.

This story is such a fantastic blend of urban fantasy, angel/demon lore, and the psychology of figuring out how to love yourself as a whole despite hatred and bigotry. It is a beautiful picture of Layla discovering who she is and what she is capable of for the first time in her 17 years, after being told her whole life that part of her is evil and should be hated. The two male protagonists, Roth and Zayne, both have such different relationships with her, but both fit her perfectly. Zayne is sweet and caring, but oscillates between duty as a Warden and his love for Layla. Roth is fiery and impulsive, but fiercely protective, allowing her to fully be who she is with no shame. Security and freedom represented in two relationships.

There was enough action to move the story along and just enough spice to keep the reader wanting more. The first book in a trilogy, with a spin-off series in the works, it is a fantastic read and an important look into acceptance and being true to who you are.

Ooooh JLA 😍 I'm not sure what I can say that hasn't already been said, but The Dark Elements is one of her young adult series and for me, when I picked it up, it was such a refreshing read! Which makes me laugh 1) because while this is a lighter read as far as fantasy & writing goes, the content is slightly on the darker side with its paranormal elements, and 2) when I recently watched JLA and SJM’s Instagram Live, I found out that one of JLA’s go-to, comfort zone shows while she writes is Supernatural AND IT’S MINE TOO just in general 😂

At any rate, I found White Hot Kiss light, fun, and easy to get through and digest. It touches just enough world-building and fantasy boxes without being overly complicated or too in-depth that I just breezed right through. The story takes our world and infuses it with an angels and demons trope which I am always down for as well as an incredibly well-done love triangle! This urban, punky fantasy also felt oddly cozy with its high school vibes. In my mind, we were at my middle school which brought with it some nostalgia! JLA’s writing is SO spunky and fresh to the point of snort-laughing and I'm here for it!

I am also OBSESSED with the fact that Roth knows about Supernatural and his music taste follows suit. Also, Zayne has an Impala 😍🙌🏻 Thank you very much for that JLA!!! A must-read if you’re a paranormal, fantasy, and JLA fan!

I thought about tossing this one to the side because the first chapter didn’t grab me. I’m glad I stuck with it. Because of Layla’s ability, is hard for her to get too close to a guy, that is until Roth, the sexy demon comes along. Yet there’s still Zayne, the sexy warden, whom she’s known for most of her life, yet, is unfortunately someone Layla can’t have. Both guys are yummy, but she’s only capable of getting closer to one. I don’t foresee there being any chance Layla could be with with Zayne, so Roth seems like a better choice. I find Roth much more yummy. Maybe because the reader is able to spend more time with him and less with Zayne. But, with the way the book ended, things could go in a different direction. That is if Bambi doesn’t interfere. The question is who can she trust. The wardens didn’t fill her in with what she should have known and Roth could be the manipulative liar, being that he is a demon who openly admits he is a liar. Then there’s Zayne who undoubtedly cares for Layla, but is he keeping things from her.

Gargoyles...

Every time I read paranormal/fantasy romance with them I cannot help cracking up. Somehow once I pull myself together, I am quite surprised by how much I enjoy the material. Case in point White Hot Kiss.

There are gargoyles and demons, hot, hot demons like Roth.

Our main chica in this series is Layla a part demon, part gargoyle badass who finds herself unable to kiss anyone without killing them/sucking out their soul until she meets Roth. A hot to trot prince of hell who makes her question everything.

Needless to say, I was sucked into this world and immediately bought the next book once I finished it.
