May Not Be the Book You Think It Is

The subtitle of this book, “Build Your Own Digital Communication System in Five Easy Steps,” is misleading for two reasons. First, you will not end up with a working communication system or even any software at all; instead you will have a collection of Matlab script files which you may be able to assemble to decode one artificially constructed message. Second, the five “easy” steps are not easy, because this is not a how-to-do-it book, it is a classroom textbook illustrated with Matlab scripts. Still, the book is valuable for what it does do, which is to describe the problems of digital data communication and provide the theory of solutions to these problems. However, even on those terms, some of the explanations are poor. This book might be OK for classroom use, but it’s not a good choice for self-study.
