First off, if SciFi could give us any lesson it should be "never let teenagers into space". Seems to be a runninng concept that if you let teens out there they will create havoc and nearly destroy us all. That's kind of what happens in these books. But don't worry, the Molly Fyde series is excellent story telling, and I enjoyed it very much.

I'm rewriting my review because I was able to experience the books once again since my wife was reading them recently. Every once in awhile I would ask her "what's happening now" and she'd tell me. And since I'm not one to give up the plot I would simply reply "interesting".

The story telling by Howey is precise and descriptive. It also flows very well so that you get caught up in the story and simply can't put it down. I love a good Space Opera and this fits that catagory so well. The charachters are vivid and likable (except those you aren't supposed to like) and are described so that you can really get into their minds and feel the emotions along with them.

What I like most is the author, Hugh Howey. This is the 3rd series of his that I've read. First was the Silo Series, then Sand, and now of course Molly Fyde. Three vastly different stories yet you can easily tell that they were the same writer. It's such a diversity that isn't found in today's writers, no matter the genre. I have been amazed and please and can't wait for more. And my wife can't wait either.

3.0 out of 5 starsgreat finish to the story but...
Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2012
i didn't really care about the flashbacks. cole's was semi-interesting, walter's i skipped through, and anlyn's i barely skimmed through. the best backstory was the freakin wadi's! but it was in the prolouge so it didn't feel intrusive like i felt the rest of the flashbacks were.

the actual story was very good though and i thought it tied it up nicely so if there are no more molly fyde books in howey's future i'll be sad but at least i feel satisfied. love molly, cole, the wadi, and cat; great characters! howey can really make you feel for these people. i loved the hyperspace part of the story. i could lose penelope, anlyn, edison, and anything palan related.

if you haven't read wool yet, read wool!! its what turned me on to howey in the first place even though the stories are different in every way a story can be whats the same is his wonderfully descriptive worlds he creates and characters (even bad peeps) that you emote with.

if my vote counts at all i want more molly fyde! and not like another five hundred years down the road molly fyde's decendants; i mean the characters that survived this book doing what howey hinted at them doing at the end of the story.

Yea for Molly Fyde! Yea for Hugh Howey!

This concludes my Hugh Howey reading marathon. Since I discovered the endlessly amazing Wool (YOU MUST READ IT!!! NOW!!!) I've read nothing except Hugh Howey books. 6 Silo stories (Now on my Greatest Ever shelf), The Hurricane (loved it), The Plagiarist (loved it), Half Way Home (well written but preachy--mad me mad), I Zombie (Gross, didn't get past page 5), and 4 Molly Fyde stories (Totally Awesome). I guess you could say I'm a fan. Or I'm obsessive. Both are probably accurate . . .

Enough about me and my feelings for Hugh. This is about Molly. She's a 17-year-old star fighter pilot who gets kicked out of the Intergalactic Naval Academy because she's too good and she intimidates the boys. Well, at least that's what your led to believe. Turns out the conspiracies start subtlety showing their hand beginning on page one of book one--and then there's non stop mystery, excitement, love, heroics, tragedy, intrigue, imagination, cliff hangers, betrayal, and the like right up until you close the cover on the very last book.

I loved reading the Molly Fyde books. In addition to being completely fun, the characters are endearing and the creativity throughout the story is more impressive than I can even express. This ability to create completely unique and imaginative is a common factor throughout all of Hugh's books. Watch out for some language (not so bad in Molly Fyde, but it's there), but other than that I feel like discovering Hugh Howey was like winning the reading lottery. The 4 Molly Fyde books get my full and complete recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars A good finale to a good series!

Sometimes it is annoying when you are reading a series and the last book leaves you unhappy. The fight for peace was a good finish to a really good saga.

Without spoilers I will say that my favorite is Cat's dance on the ship. Some major characters who there for most of the series lose their lives, but not in a way that makes you angry like some other series (with initials G.O.T.) I have started.

This is not a perfect work, there quite a few times I kinda thought well that isn't very realistic, but I'm not reading fiction because to hear about another reality that is perfectly thought out and strictly consistent. I'm reading fiction for enjoyment and for me the main concerns are likable characters and the story of how they overcome adversity. This series filled that bill very nicely.

Things I really liked:
Cat!
Parsona
Hyperspace - very creative if a little wacky
Bern Seer
cool swords - esp how careful you have to fight differently and be careful with them very well done
Byrne is a good bad guy
How you understand more about things that happened earlier as you proceed.

Things I didn't like as much
Too much gore
I think blood of billions need a couple happy moments it was too much of a downer
I felt that Saunders would have been way harder to convince
Didn't get the point of events involving Riggs

I highly recommend this book and the series in general, especially if you mainly like good stories and characters more than you value perfection and consistency.

The series is a bit slow getting going in the beginning, but once it does, you're hooked.

Here, in book 4 of the series, the characters are all either dear friends or....someone you kind of wish were a friend but you don't really trust him...or someone you're pretty sure is a sneaky bastard but you wonder about whether his motives might not be what the appear...or someone you've heard about and are only now getting to know....
Anyway, they are well-developed, complex and familiar. By this point, Howey is free to let the characters do their thing, which as usual involves amazingly complicated gravity defying spaceship maneuvering and saving planets with bobby pins. I'm sure it would all work in real life though, because the details and explanations are so clear.

The story races along. There was a bit at the end that reminded me campily of "Star Wars", but I was sobbing anyway.

There's a few loose ends, so I'm very relieved to hear that there is more Molly Fyde in the works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Molly Fyde Bern Saga 4

I loved the Silo Saga so I thought I would try another Hugh Howie series. This is a bit more for Tweens but enjoyable anyway. I mean what young girl would not want to be great at piloting her own space craft, fighting other spieces and winning (bare-handed!), making friends with other world species, being beautiful AND getting the best guy in the acadmy? I would and I am over 50 years old!

Here we aee an older, smarter Molly Fyde. But still as brave as ever. She is becoming a young woman now, some jealousy, but still has her eye on saving the world. She still gets the guy but in a more mature way.

But really, a good series, perfect for the tweens, no foul language, no making out or sex, and the blood isn't even gory red. A good recommendation for 10 to 14 year old female readers. I don't think the boys would want to read about getting the better of the younger and older males by a girl!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Conclusion

Hugh Howey's final book in the Molly Fyde saga, Book 4, ends with most all the loose ends nicely tied and accounted for. I like that each of the four books are good lengths so that I received reciprocal value for the price I paid.

The very strong and capable women characters are excellent role models for all who read this series while the main males are not only endearing, but also brave and match the women's intelligence and goodness. The partnerships formed between male/female as well as among a variety of alien species are very rewarding to discover as the books progress.

Saving universe's is a big theme. For me, Howdy did a fine job of presenting circumstances that challenged both the characters and the readers. Recommend the whole series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible!

Lately I've been seeing a plethora of books that have teenagers or other young people as the main characters. Most of the ones I have read are good, some are not, others are terrible, but this series by Hugh Howey is incredible! The two main characters are teenagers and Mr. Howey is able to write them realistically as youngsters and at the same time this series is not for kids. I was hesitant at first to read this series because it is so different than the entirety of the Wool series, which was masterfully written. But Mr. Howey has created a universe where humans are a malformed creation of a race that can make the universe into whatever image it wants.

The scale is vast and the adventure spans the galaxy going in and out of hyperspace.

5.0 out of 5 stars A really enjoyable series that was hard to put down.

This final book in the Bern Saga is the longest yet at nearly 700 pages. But like the other books in the series the pages just seem to melt away. The Bern are attacking and against all odds Molly Fyde and friends must find a way to stop them.

This book starts with a back story about the Wadi and in addition provides back stories for three of the main characters; Anlyn Hoo, Walter, and Cole.

This book wraps up an impressive saga and answers all our burning questions including the identity of the Bern Seer.

I just started reading a lot this last year and a week ago I added this collection to my reading list. Once i started the first book I couldn't put it down. I have read all of them in a week. The whole series keeps you right there with Molly and wanting to reach out and help her take on the galaxy. It is well worth your money and don't just get the first book because when you finish you will want to get the next one to find out what happens. So get all of them at the same time so you don't have to stop and wait for the next one to download. Loved the series and would highly recommend reading this series.
