Any mystery needs to appeal & be relatable to the reader. This story begins in the setting at an Auction of a family's property. The main character,Jaymie and her sister Becca, both collect items that are easily found in most auctions. At this auction Jaymie see an old Hoosier cabinet, because she loves items from the past especially those for the kitchen. It was easy for me to relate to because I once found N Antique Hoosier Cabinet that I loved and had to have, so I was able to relate to falling in love wean object that has so much history. I bought mine, my husband restored it and it's my favorite piece of furniture. The Hoosier Cabinet is surrounded by mystery and has a story to tell and that's what the mystery is about. Jamie is 32, has a sister 15 years older and the dynamics of their relationship is typical of most siblings where the Becca feels she needs to guide her younger sister, and that never bodes well. Jamie is fortunate enough because of her family dynamics to be able to pursue independent career choices. Her personal life has been upset because she has to review what happened to her last failed relationship and she must decide how to deal with the aftermath. It's all part of life and the book has, many interesting characters. Overall I found it interesting. Those thing that bothered me was at times there seemed to be a deliberate attempt to use a thesaurus to replace ordinary, daily vocabulary with words that were similar but didn't always seem to fit , and some seem out of context. I have my Masters so vocabulary is always interesting to me but it's almost as if someone just looked in th thesaurus and thought, 'this word fits when maybe it didn't seem to fit.
Jamie is at the crossroads of her life seeking independence and looking introspective at her life and what she values and throughout this mystery her values come to light. There is mystery and more than enough suspects. The book was enjoyable and there was a choices I add but that's what reading is about decisions that determine the course of the story. After her unexpected breakup with the man she thought she loved she has to make personal decisions and 2 interesting but very different men enter her life. Personally I'm hoping that she makes a better decision the next time around than she did the first round. I'm older an although handsome might be an initial response I'm hopeful she will eventually realize in future books that the matures matching values has more longevity than "good looking.". My preference is Daniel because he has the same values and because every mystery always has the character linked to a detective and they go off in the sunset and solve mysteries. I think the story has so much more potential if " the good guy wins." Daniel is always there for her, something she has never had because her parents seem so detached from her life others than financially.
Now about the mystery of the Hoosier Cabinet, I highly recommend reading the story and sincerely hope the author continues to surprise the reader with the choices the main character makes and doesn't go down the expected path. This had an unexpected ending, some things didn't quite fit but that tends to follow real life .

3.0 out of 5 starslots of twists and turns and lots of information about the town
Reviewed in the United States ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ on June 30, 2012
The book was very slow in the beginning. The writer explains the town then the history of the town then some of the town people...it got a bit old. Once the murder happened I expected things to pick up a bit but instead Jaymie just went about her normal routine. Yes, I understand citizens don't ususally get involved with police investigations but this is a cozy so I sort of thought she would...but nope. Not yet. More information is given about the town and its folk. Then Jaymie stumbles upon a special item and instead of turning it over to the police she keeps it and goes about her normal routine even though Jaymie is saying she will for the last few chapters. Then Jaymie is the victim of another crime! What a surprise! Jaymie doesn't seem to be the smartest pea in the pod and after a while I found this trait a bit irritating. Then finally Jaymie decides to investigate which ends up being alot of going over things people told her in her head and trying to remember what she heard or was told..not alot of edge of your seat sleuthing. But at least the character did something...which lead to an over analysis of her love life, the two guys she may or may not have an interest in, her career and ect....once Jaymie does so some sleuthing the story picks up a bit and takes quite a few twists and turns which would have been nice to see more evenly distrubuted in the book.

Victoria Hamilton is one of my favorite authors, and this first book in the series does not disappoint. There are plenty of dead ends and winding roads and surprising detours. Three cheers for an excellent mystery!!

I can't remember if it is made clear that this is book one of the series. I sometimes have a hard time figuring this out.

I am on an ever constant search for a mystery that has characters to whom I can relate. I found myself completely in tune with Jaymie, her sis Becca, and wonderful friend Dee. Jaymie is in love with vintage dishes, cookbooks, and suddenly a sweet Hoosier cabinet at a local estate auction. (Coincidentally, I have the exact Hoosier depicted on the book cover!) When Jaymie wins the bid, she takes home more than the cabinet...murder follows her home as well!

There are a number of things that I particularly enjoyed. Jaymie loves, collects, and (forgive me) covets the stuff I do! My aging home, built in 1925, is packed with vintage housewares, linens, and antiques I've collected over the last 20 years from hither and yon. And like Becca "nags" Jaymie about there being NO room for anything else; I receive similar "caring and helpful" advice. I smile and using my selective-hearing-secret-power; pretend I didn't hear a thing and carve out room. I am interested in recipes from the past and am intrigued by how modern conveniences have made producing good food so much easier. (A boon to this book is the recipe for Queen Victoria Cake from long ago.) I am considering trying my hand at it. Jamie's love for vintage creates a "career" in finding special pieces for others and to her putting together a cookbook collection of vintage recipes adapted for cooks of today. IF she can find a publisher. I'll buy a copy!

I also appreciated the absence of swearing; explicit sex and violence. Right up my alley! Since books do not come with ratings, I've ended up with books that contain themes I'm not interested in. These books have their readers but I'm looking for something else.

I liked the premise, the characters, and the story. Jaymie is loving and caring to family and friends. She invests her time in others in a hurried world. I liked that. There is a romantic bent with a couple of love interest possibilities for the single 32-year old Jaymie. She's not sure she's ready for a new relationship as she is still getting over her "old" boyfriend's sudden departure into the arms of another. This is particularly hard in a small town where everyone knows everybody else's business! The romance angle wasn't something I was looking for but others may find it a bonus and/or necessity. :-) There are no steamy descriptions, scenes, or dialogue.

All in all this turned out to be a good read. Nice and interesting people (well, excluding the villains and murderer, that is) in a sweet community, and a good whodunit to solve! I like to read to try and relax so I can fall asleep and this book completely fit the bill! I was able to put it aside to sleep and yet I wanted to resume reading the following night. I read it in about six hours.

Update: 12/30/2013
I went on to read book two:
Bowled Over (Vintage Kitchen Mysteries)  and three:  Freezer I'll Shoot (A Vintage Kitchen Mystery) . I enjoyed both!

VINE VOICE
4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging new mystery series for nostalgia-driven foodies

A cozy mystery can attract me with a setting and protagonist profession. That is, if I can tell myself I'll learn what's involved in running a florist business or what it'd be like to work in a re-enactment museum, I easily can justify a few hours finding out if the characters and whodunnit also measure up. In this first book in a new series, I was drawn to the interests of the main character -- a vintage cookware and cookbook collector -- and I'm glad I read the book. It's not perfect, but it absolutely fulfilled my "Please entertain me" requirements.

The setup is a little funky. Jaymie lives in a small touristy town on the U.S./Canadian border that embraces its history (such as running a yearly "Tea with the Queen" event). She's still getting over a breakup with a long-time boyfriend, who left her six months ago. But everything starts to change when Jaymie goes to an estate auction and falls in love with a "Hoosier," a 1920s all-in-one kitchen cabinet (no, I'd never heard of such things either). All is fine until that night, when someone breaks onto the porch where she temporarily left the cabinet... and is murdered. As with any cozy mystery, Jaymie gets involved in figuring out who and why.

There's also a charming three-legged dog, a standoffish cat, and -- well c'mon what did you expect? -- the beginning of a new love interest. The book cover promises "with recipes!" but you might want to note that it's only ONE recipe (though it does actually figure in the story, so I guess that's okay).

There are a few things in A Deadly Grind that are a little more true-to-life than we see in most mystery novels, such as the heroine essentially freaking out about the murder and, really, obsessing over it ALMOST to an annoying degree. (And then I think about how I'd react under the circumstances, and forgive the author for her verisimilitude.) I also like the fact that -- unlike most mysteries -- Jaymie and her friends have absolutely no idea who the victim is, so the first question to resolve is, "Who the heck is he and what was he doing on my porch?" instead of "And which of the many people with a motivation to kill the obviously-evil victim actually did it?"

The result is a fun, very readable story. I had to consciously suspend my disbelief at some of the plot points, but I was interested enough in the people and the setting to cheerfully set aside my critical analysis. I won't press this upon you and say, "Oh oh you MUST read this!" but if you buy the novel, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

I was intrigued by the subject of this cozy mystery when I read that it was "A Vintage Kitchen Mystery" as I happen to collect vintage kitchen items and I have a fairly large collection of cookbooks, many antique and vintage.
The opening lines are provocative and immediately draw one in to the story. The initial setting, at an estate auction, is in itself interesting as auctions always seem to turn up some exciting finds and a house of this era is sure to include some truly vintage treasures.
I could easily picture myself in that venue, happily bidding for the very same items.
The characters, with one or two exceptions, are entirely believable and the protagonist, Jaymie Leighton, is very engaging and it is easy to understand her motivations.
The murder is sufficiently quirky and the number of suspects enough to make it difficult to determine the identity of the murderer until near the end of the story.
I did guess the name of the perpetrator but only because I am always suspicious when a solution seems too pat. I just knew there had to be something else going on.
I particularly like the inclusion of the recipe for the Queen Elizabeth Cake at the end of the book. I have added it to my "to try" list.
In my opinion, any reader who is a fan of cozy mysteries will enjoy this one.

I'd been wanting to get to this series for a long time now. It was fun meeting Jaymie, her sister Becca and her different friends in the small Michigan town of Queensville. Jaymie had no idea when she fell in love with and bought an old Hoosier cabinet at an auction that it would be such a much-wanted piece from others as well. It was a good mystery with a great twist at the end. Jaymie ended up with two guys interested in her, so I'll be interested to see what happens with her and all her friends as the series goes on.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love this new series

As a debut book in a new mystery series I was pleasantly entertained. The new series is known as "A Vintage Kitchen Mystery," and I was happy to have this fact presented throughout the book. It ties in so nicely.

Our newest sleuth, Jaymie Leighton is a vintage cookware and cookbook enthusiast. Jaymie has amassed a large collection of usable Pyrex bowls etc. from times past. She is also a new writer of a compilation and modernization recipe book. To my delight Jaymie shared one of her main recipes involved in the story with us readers at the end, plus adding the history of the food. Outstanding idea.

The mystery was quite a mystery. Very physical (Jaymie and her new Vintage Hoosier gets attacked,) and also very cerebral as we join her in trying to figure out what the crooks are after and then share in the awe of finding the object. As to the culprits...oh I'm not even going to give you the slightest hint. It is a romp through a tourist mecca that you will remember.

I look forward to many more adventures with Jaymie and family and friends of Queensville, Michigan.

This first book in the Vintage Kitchen Mystery series has left me eager to read more from Victoria Hamilton! Having a fondness for vintage recipes and antiques myself ... especially Hoosier cabinets, I just couldn't resist reading this and once I started it was quite difficult to pry myself from between the pages. Hamilton has created a wonderful cast of characters living in this quaint Michigan town. I felt as though I were among old friends with each passing page...that is until a dead boy is found on Jaymie's summer porch! Filled with unexpected twists and turns, and plenty of red herrings throughout, Hamilton has created a charming mystery that left me guessing until the very end! And of course, recipes are included and I'm very tempted to give them a try...especially the Queen Victoria cake recipe. I've added this series to my list of cozy series to continue and look forward to reading the next installment, Bowled Over.

i really like this author. My first time reading her books. I like Jaymie and where she lives. I don't know the authors history but she is obviously pro-choice, she doesn't mince words or replay conversations involving her characters. They are politically correct and that's refreshing. And the books are interesting. I will read this series. Thank you Ms. Hamilton.
