The emperor has been assassinated and his heirs are now in danger. His successor, Kaden, is tucked away far from society where they believe him to be safe from attacks, but his brother, Valyn knows different. Someone has betrayed them and Valyn can trust no one with his secret. Nor can he go rescue Kaden immediately due to his own commitments. We are left with Adare's promise of revenge, the emperors unmarried daughter, and hoping her brothers are up to the task of running her beloved empire.

I enjoyed the first seven chapters and really look forward to the book. The chapters provided were filled with character introductions and preparing for what was to come. The royal family is not close, each had been sent to train for their own duties to the empire at a young age and will now have to trust the adults they have become to save the empire from a coup. I've already preordered my copy to finish the tale!

The prologue was so good, but the (unrelated) rest was kind of misogynistic and maybe a little juvenile when describing fat characters. It all suffered from repetitiveness. It all suffered from repetitiveness.

This was a fantastic book! Well written, great characters, and a fantasy world/story that draws you in! Maybe some of it was similar to other books in the fantasy genre but it did not feel cliche, overdone or like it was stolen. Plenty of questions that I'll be waiting (im)patiently to have answered!

Something I'll add for those that like a story to suck you in and not let go, I felt like the first chapter of The Emporer's Blades did just that. It made you think and you start to put the pieces together fairly quickly of how it is tied into the story.

I picked this up intending to read a few pages and, about 90 minutes later, finally put it down. Staveley has created a fascinating world with compelling characters and a looming sense of menace sure to spill forth in later chapters. That, and and a really cool bird (look at the cover art). This is a great free "teaser" that I highly recommend to anyone who enjoys epic fantasy. I can't wait for this book's full publication in January...

This series is awesome beyond belief. I finally finished all three and can say I am very happy with what he has done.
Mr. Staveley does a great job of making the bad guys feel like the kind of bad guy you need to die, but need to live. The scale of the battle happening in the minds of the leaders dwarfs all that you see on the battle field.

The authors writing ability is good, but the premise of the story, the hodgepodge world creation, and the over-the-top fantasy elements just weren't to my tastes. If a book can't grab me in the first seven chapters, it just isn't going to happen. This book didn't grab me.

This is quite simply, one of the best fantasy novels that I have ever read. Staveley's prose is second to none, I was fully immersed from page one of the prologue. I bought this book on a random whim and devoured it in two days. To my chagrin, the next installment is twelve months hence-- a torturous twelve months to be sure. Stop reading this and buy the book now!
