I liked it but it’s not my favorite of Jojo Moyes books. The back and forth chapters of multiple characters thoughts is a bit much.
The martyrdom of both Liza and Mike is a bit over the top. If Mike like researching possibilities like it is stated, then he should have looked more into Vanessa’s reasoning. A woman scorned is quite often a barracuda.
Liza was willing to give up Hannah, her daughter who was abused by her boyfriend, Steven Villiers, and who had abused Liza too. Liza thought she had caused the death of her daughter Letty, whom she had with Steven. For Liza to willingly to go to jail to save whales, and sacrifice Hannah’s mental well-being, would cause so many psychological problems from her mother leaving her. Oh no, that is a no brainer. My child would always come first. A child is more important than an animal. Before turning myself in or even contemplating it. I would have investigated Steven. When a man is as abusive as he was, is a chronic abuser. He was a lying, cheating, manipulative man, Liza would have found something. Thank goodness Mike’s sister investigated more and listened to her intuition. Because it actually works out in the end because of Mike’s sister.
