much Potential but Fails to Deliver

There are a lot of things going on in this story and at tines I thought there was too much. Overall, there was just too much going on for me to really like it.
It took me almost 200 pages to become interested. The story is one with which i quit several times because of poor story line. For example, i quit when a drugged child is used for bait to trap an invisible worm like thing, which in turn is the bait for a flying invisible manta ray thing. The ray thing is to speedily power a ship that has rowers and sails. Eventually, I read on...
Characters are fleshed out, interesting, and believable. I liked the growth in Talon from a dumb kid to an adult Scenery discussions for the most part are also well done. I would have preferred less tribal warfare and jumbled bad guys for one or two well defined threats. I had a major problem understanding the identity and history of various clans and the tribal differences. A brief discussion or history lesson would have added for me at least one half star to the rating.
I will pass on the sequels.
