Might be useful if planning visit to Verdun. Recently visited Verdun. Very worthwhile and awe inspiring considering the carnage that occurred there in the longest battle ever fought. Entire area is overgrown with brush and trees. Visit to Fort Douamont worthwhile. Musee Armee in Paris and Musee in Meaux both very worthwhile to WWI buffs.
This book is part of a series of short, photo-filled military histories paperbacks. It provides a lot of great details,a nd the graphics and pictures are downright spectacular. I only wish it were even longer.
The French lost Fort Douamont during the first week of the 10 month battle of Verdun and spent most of the second half of the battle trying to get it back. Conditions in the fort for the German defenders were appalling, the French casualties were appallingly high, and the fort didn't pass back into French hands until just before the fighting ground to a halt. This is a detailed and gruesome account of the fighting in and around the fortress, and a useful walking guide for anyone wanting to see the battle field for themselves. An excellent book and highly recommended for anyone interested in the Great War.
Solid piece of scholarship that sets out the Fort Douamont tragedy clearly and dispassionately. It is hard to imagine at this distance the awful terror and waste of life that took place here; hundreds are still entombed within the fort. Anyone who doubts the utter futility of war should read this book.
