I will go against the majority here and say I liked this book. I really didn't see where Ava was that bad. I had read these negative reviews before I read the book and I kept waiting for her to do something really whiny and I didn't see it. This is my favorite type of story. The man marries but doesn't love the woman and she thinks there is someone else. London said she thought of Diana and Charles as the inspiration for this book and I think it worked.

A lot of people felt that Ava was the one who didn't stand up to her stepfather, but I felt Jared wimped out over Edmond. He wasn't the hero "who can do no wrong" in my book. Jared wasn't one of my top five male leads--in fact, I felt he was the weak link in this story. He bickered and fretted over how his father made him feel, but he didn't really stand up for himself.

I am a Julia London fan and I was glad to see that this book wasn't the dud several people portrayed. I am anxious to see how Ava's sisters fare in their matrimonial pursuits. And who is Mr. Percy?

After reading Greer's story - the one about the prince - which is the middle book of the Desperate Debutantes trilogy, I decided I wasn't enamored enough of Greer and her prince to be interested in any further discourse about her cousins. But I was so wrong! Ava is immediately likeable from the get-go, and by far my favorite cousin of the 3 girls. Jared is your typical stoic and unemotional lordly rake, but also likeable, especially when he believably can't seem to help falling for Ava.

I also greatly admired Ava's courage in the face of a husband who started out not nearly as interested in her as she was in him, putting this book into a definite 5-star category. Having read all 3 of the trilogy now, I can say that the Hazards of Hunting a Duke is the clear winner.

This is the first book of the Debutante series and I personally found it to be rather compelling. There are some far-fetched situations but it did not get too ridiculous considering the subject matter. I found it to be an entertaining read although I'm not sure if I would reread it again.

This was not Julia London's best effort. The plot line was slow and the romance was nil. There was zero sexual tension, zero hero jealousy, and the tired marriage of convenience theme.

There was too much repertoire between Ava and her sister and not enough going on with the hero.

I felt the h/h were in love only because the author tells us they were. There is no build up to the grand climax. I just kept waiting for it and nothing happened.

I gave it three stars because I really enjoyed JL's older work. For a great read, check out "Wicked Angel".
