5.0 out of 5 starsOk! Didn’t see that coming!

I very much enjoy Jeremy Robinson’s writing and stories, with and without others. There is always some unexpected twist or turn and just when you think you may have a plausible reason…you don’t! This particular story romps through an ever changing countryside. You come to appreciate the character’s strengths and weaknesses. It also makes you realise that while there could be a parallel universe or other dimensions, “This isn’t Kansas anymore Toto!” Dark but good and entertaining! Hope there is a sequel.

3.0 out of 5 starsDecent, But Not Quite A Stand-Out Effort
Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2014
Refuge covers the adventures of a group of townsfolk who, whilst much of the town is gone, find themselves transported (along with the town itself) to another world. the books cover the exploits and dangers they encounter along the way.

Firstly the writing is good technically and stylistically. Pains have been taken to make the different authors styles gel, and while there are some typos they don't noticeably detract from the reading experience. The writing is generally easy to follow, pertinent, and varied enough to keep your attention.

The characters are so-so. There are a lot of them and not all of them feel fleshed out sufficiently or given enough page time. Even those that the story focuses on, though, do not feel particularly depth-ful. Some of this is due to the TV-show feel of the story and the penchant for slow character development that shows often take. That said, the dialogue is good, the characters are consistent, but develop believably as the as much as the story allows for as it progresses.

My biggest gripe is the story itself. For the page count, not a whole lot seems to happen, and the world that the characters explore could have played a much more prominent role. Much of the story focuses on the characters running around town trying to figure out what was going on or on characters who die off or otherwise don't much advance the overall plot. The cast can become a little unwieldy at times despite this and keeping everyone straight was difficult at points.

Perhaps the revelation at the beginning that the story was going to be modeled like a TV show, with the first 5 episodes comprising episode 1, skewed my viewpoint. As it was though, it just did not feel the story moved forward commensurate to the page count. While not a cardinal sin for a reader, I personally felt like the story that was told could have been told in a shorter amount of pages.

Recommended, but not one I'll rush to read the sequels for.

"13 levels of hell"......
An impossible-to-put-down full-tilt horror series. A great story that unfolds at an even, fast pace. A lot of bad stuff happens in this. A minor amount of unnecessary "filler", but it's not bad.
Well written, for the most part.

But I wish the authors had asked some people to read what they had written before publication so they could have caught the glaring inconsistencies and fallacies in the books.

SEMI-SPOILERS (but not really direct give-aways):
There are some things that bothered me.
At the end of Book 2 I think it was, they discover what might be the cause of what is going on...... but then it's like that never happened!! Any normal person, let alone intelligent people, would have immmediately focused on the bizarre thing they discovered (and it is prety much obvious that it's related to the events taking place since it makes a path to the bell tower) and would try to figure it out!! But it's like they never saw anything, until much later. It's totally ignored by them for an unusual amount of time..... until Book Four.

Also, in Book 3 when sound triggers attacks (I won't say by what) and the military guys warn certain people of that fact, it goes TOTALLY against what any normal person would act like a short time later when they torture one of them for information!! Obviously, anyone being tortured is going to make A LOT of noise!! These military guys would NOT have done that in the face of what the danger is. ESPECIALLY in the face of what the danger is.

But all-in-all it's a good story. Just plan on overlooking some stupidity and inconsistencies.

Would love for this group of authors to write another series! Just a little more thought put into what transpires.

4.0 out of 5 stars Season 1 Was a Hit!!
Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2014

This book was great, in so many ways. 1st, I liked the concept of a new "episode" of the series coming out about every 2 weeks. I waited to buy the Omnibus, but it was nice to know if I couldn't wait I could get the episodes that were already out. I also liked that this was just the the 1st, of who knows how many, "seasons" or parts to the book. That's pretty cool.

About the books themselves. I never would've realized that there were 5 different coauthors writing these 1st 5 books, it flowed as though it was just separated into parts. I loved the concept of the book.....a town suddenly spiraling from 1 world to the next, not knowing what the new world would bring with it. It was a fun read & I'm looking forward to Season 2!

The only thing that was tricky for me were all the characters. Each book flowed well, but with each book, if I remember correctly, there was at least 1 new character introduced. The main characters stayed the same always, but with the ever expanding cast of characters, I felt that there wasn't enough life blown into each character. This had an impact because, even in the last of the 5 books I had to pause to think about who, exactly, certain central key players were. After 5 books I just feel like I shouldn't have to question who someone is. Add in different nicknames & at times I had to stop & remember who was who. I think that's pretty much the only flaw, albeit kind of a big 1, that I had with these books. That's the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.

Regardless, if you like mystery, sci-fi, thrilling action packed adventures-BUY THIS SERIES!! I know I'll certainly be buying the books that come out for this series myself in the future!!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a great idea. What a fantastically fun ride......

I have been reading Jeremy for years. He is, by far, my current favorite author. Gathering together other similar authors to create this novel was a fantastic and innovative idea that, in my opinion, really worked well to create a chilling, (litterally) out-of-this-world experience. I waited and purchase the entire story rather than read the individual serial books and was pleased that they worked togther seamlessly. It also allowed for different perspectives from the same storyline to unfold at different times while still holding the reader in complete anticipation of what was to come. I loved all the characters and the evolving storyline made for good scary moments thoughtout the book. It a was a rollercoaster of fun and a delight to read.

Jeremy puts out more books per year than any other author I have read (try waiting for years between Wilbur Smith novels!). His story ideas are varied, unmatched, and always, always a joy to read. I can't wait for the next crazy book from Jeremy. Keep them coming!

A breakneck paced book that keeps you breathless until the end. It was cool imagining the different authors picking up the pieces of the previous story and moving on. It's not the deepest of stories, but a fun read nonetheless. I'll probably tune in to the next version.

5.0 out of 5 stars How many version of Hell are there?

I was never a big fan of horror, that is until I started reading Jeremy Bishop. This book is a collaboration with 5 different authors taking us readers to many different versions of hell that one small town goes through. I was amazed how 5 different people were able to write different parts/takes on one central story line. Some of the stuff is pretty sick and disgusting (which I am sure the authors will take as the compliment is meant to be)! It is not for those who scare easily because some of this stuff will make you shiver and wish you never read it!!! Pretty awesome stuff!

I could go on and on but I don't have that kind of time ;-). The omnibus version is a better value than the individual chapters so if you like any of his previous works or some of the works of the co-authors, take a chance. I think you will like it.

Jeremy Bishop and ALL the authors in this oh too short series did an Excellent job. Most books written by more than One Author usually ends up very inconsistent all the way through - But, Not Refuge! The Omnibus reads as one continuous novel.
More a Horror/Mystery novel than Science Fiction, Refuge moves along very quickly, and before you know it you're at The End...
Or maybe Not! Hopefully Mr. Bishop will continue this series to answer the eternal question of any Great Book: So, What Happens Next?
This book reads like a literary game of musical chairs... just when you're settled in, it's time to change, signaled by the town's church bell!
I knew I had to read this story when I found out Robert Swartwood was involved, and I was not disappointed!
