5.0 out of 5 starsVery funny "chick'flick" movie
Reviewed in the United States on October 8, 2016
This was a fun movie. As a huge Jane Austen fan, I just really enjoyed the premise - in a way it is a classic Jane Austen romance. Our heroine is basically a Jane Austen out of control fan, reality comes crashing down around her when she spends her life savings on a Jane Austen immersion vacation. Acting was great, and it was very funny. I can honestly say there were parts that had me truly laughing out loud (so hard, tears in my eyes!). This is a great, light romantic comedy also Jennifer Coolidge and James Callis are a riot.

Update: Movie vs Book.
Okay, I had not realized that this movie was based on a book. So I promptly read the book, it's a quick read and I have to say my review as written stands. Although the book was very nice, the basic story is the same and honestly, if they followed the book too closely, I think the movie would have been a little boring. Often, when you love a book, you are a little disappointed in the movie version, I believe mostly that has to do with the inability to fit in all the details a book can within 90 - 120 minutes. This movie was a great balance and I think a better story,

A
1.0 out of 5 stars"Bad" is the nicest adjective I can think of
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2020
When this came up in my recommendations, I was skeptical. But I was in the mood for something light to watch while I folded laundry and stuff, so I figured I'd give it a chance, thinking maybe it would surprise me and be wryly funny. Should have gone with my gut. This movie was just... bad. And that is the nicest possible adjective I can think of to describe this move. The writing was bad. The acting was bad. (With the exception of James Callis' wonderful comedic performance.) The character development was flat, there was no motivation for any of the action, the plot twists were not twisty. Although it shares the key plot points with a Pride and Prejudice, it wholly lacks the wit and empathetic characters. The main character, Jane, is no Elizabeth Bennet. Her character is annoying and dumb, and completely unbelievable. I honestly preferred to pay attention to my folded socks instead of what was going on on the screen- at least my socks didn't throw temper tantrums or demand that I not only suspend my disbelief, but shove it out the window entirely in order to accept such implausible characters and plot. If you are looking for a modern day retelling of Pride and Prejudice, I'd suggest Bridget Jones' Diary instead. If you would like an entertaining and illuminating show about modern people trying to live in an authentic period setting, watch the PBS reality series "Manor House" and "Regency House." If you want Jane Austen, watch a BBC adaptation... or just read the books. I wouldn't recommend Austenland.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant love story sure to please Austen fans young and old.

First, let me start off by saying: I hate romcoms. As a 17-year-old Austenite myself I am always looking for period love stories that throw off the disgustingly modern tropes, over-sexualization, and jokes that just don't land commonly seen in today's movies. After reading the description for this movie, though marketed as a romcom, I decided to give it a chance, and boy was I ever pleased.

Austenland provides a refuge for anyone - and not just ladies, though this movie is definitely directed towards us - who loves Austen's novels and the kind of romance she provides. Though there are shirtless men and some innuendo here and there, it's all tasteful, and better yet - its not the central plot. In the middle of all the (surprisingly accurate) historical costuming, jokes that actually made me laugh, and lovable and humorous side characters, a romance blooms that is not only believable (well, as believable as a 1.5 hour movie can make it), but also tender and one that melts the heart of even the stoniest of people. Along with it too is a journey of self discovery for Jane and an ending that leaves no loose ends or disappointed fans. All of this made it easy for me to forgive the few cheesy romcom tropes that were present, so much so that I purchased the movie immediately after finishing the rental and watched it twice more in following 24 hours.

All in all, Austenland is a funny, feel-good romance for those of us who find themselves identifying with the leading lady Jane, someone who wants a simple, straightforward, and true love, and who isn't afraid to risk it all to find someone who feels exactly the same way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must See For Jane Austen Fans

I love the humour that Elizabeth Charming and Captain Andrews bring to this movie. They are Hilarious but Amelia Cartwright and Captain George East are equally funny with their over the top characters! I love how Mr Waddlesworth was the same actor that played Mr Hurst in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice movie. JJ Fields did a fantastic job as the resident Mr. Darcy character, Henry Nobley and the fact that he has played an Austen main character, Henry Tilney, makes it even more amusing. Keri Russell did fantastic as Jane.
I have watched it several times and found new parts to laugh at that I didn't catch the first time. This must of been an hilarious movie to make given all the characters. A must to watch for any Jane Austen fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Impressions....

Confession: I thought this would be really stupid, but watched it because I love Jane Austen. Of course, I am more enamored with Mr. Knightly than Mr. Darcy, but still. I found this to be well done. Well scripted. It started out quirky and maintained the humor throughout. I smiled a lot. Laughed a little. Maybe wished I were her a TEENY (ok, maybe a little more than that), bit. The ending was a bit jolting, but I'm still smiling so it couldn't be that bad.

I highly recommend this for Austen fans out there. Make sure you've read (and/or seen) them all as Emma, Pride and Prejudice, Persuasion, and Sense and Sensibility all make appearances. And a note to all of us, be careful for what or whom you wish (although if you know a Mr. Knightly out there, I'm still single....).

5.0 out of 5 stars Austenland Mixes Period Romance with Screwball Hilarity
Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2015

What an underrated movie! Don't believe everything rotten tomatoes says, this film is perfect for anyone who loves Austen and quirky humor. It's the little things about this movie that keeps me watching it over and over again. Staples of Austen fiction like mixed up lovers, witty conversation, and play acting are reinterpreted to comedic effect by the scriptwriters and the hilarious cast. Jennifer Coolidge's Elizabeth Charming spouts of ridiculous non sequiturs left and right while the honored Miss Heartwright cracked me up with her eccentric mannerisms and line delivery. The male characters are almost as funny between the flamboyant Colonel Andrews and the exasperated Darcy-clone Henry Nobley who's frustration with the madness of the plot just made me like him more and more. If screwball comedies that build on cliches of period romances are your thing, don't pass this movie up!

Loved it doesn't begin to describe how much I loved watching this movie. I just finished reading the book last night and watched the movie just now. It does differ from the book a little, but the spirit of the film and the book are the same. The casting was spot on and it was just such a perfect escape.

Such a cute movie! If you read the book first, it's a little different (the ending in the book is cuter, in my opinion) but it's very much worth watching! Keri Russell's character is so silly cute, and Jennifer Coolidge is so funny (she definitely made her character in the movie better than the original in the book). It's a very unique story, and very lighthearted. Worth a watch!

I loved the 2 main characters Jane and Mr. Nobley, played by Keri Russell and JJ Feild. Lots of silly stuff but some very funny scenes and all the actors were great. I think JJ Feild made a great "Mr. Darcy" character and some of the plot twists were sweet surprises.
Highly recommend for Austen fans.
