This was a really pleasant surprise. The book was free so I picked it up on a whim and didn't read it immediately, assuming it might be a bit lackluster as a result. Boy, was I glad to be wrong. This book kept my attention throughout. It's a stand-alone suspense novel with a good dash of romance thrown in between the two main characters. Mallory is an FBI agent whose career has been shaped by her twin sister, Payton, being abducted as a young child. She has a small part to play in the tracking of a serial killer, after which she is transferred to Quantico where she continues her own investigation of her sister's abduction and a spate of killings being committed. She is also commissioned with an undercover mission to help track down a vigilante who is being fed information by an unknown FBI agent. Enter Alex Parker, a former CIA assassin who is commissioned by an unknown government source to take out undesirables in the community such as serial killers and pedophiles. He is set with the task to keep an eye on Mallory, during which he questions if his choices have led his life in the right direction.
The book was told from the point of view of Mallory and Alex for most of the book, with the occasional POV of the villain being reflected. This was a good touch as it helped the reader get a bit behind the scenes. I liked Mallory and Alex as leads. Mallory was a confident female and Alex was a bit of a sweetheart while also being a strong character. As there wasn't too wide of a spread of characters in the book, it was pretty easy to narrow down the likely suspects, especially since the author dropped a few subtle hints, but I still found the plot and twists were enough to keep me entertained and there was a solid amount of detail given. However, if you really like to keep guessing throughout a novel, this might annoy you a bit. There was a good build up of suspense and the relationship side of things heated up early in the book, which I liked.
The author has been really clever offering this book for free as I will definitely be purchasing other books in the series. If you're a fan of this genre, it really is a great read.
