5.0 out of 5 starsA great romance-suspense
Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2018
This was a really pleasant surprise. The book was free so I picked it up on a whim and didn't read it immediately, assuming it might be a bit lackluster as a result. Boy, was I glad to be wrong. This book kept my attention throughout. It's a stand-alone suspense novel with a good dash of romance thrown in between the two main characters. Mallory is an FBI agent whose career has been shaped by her twin sister, Payton, being abducted as a young child. She has a small part to play in the tracking of a serial killer, after which she is transferred to Quantico where she continues her own investigation of her sister's abduction and a spate of killings being committed. She is also commissioned with an undercover mission to help track down a vigilante who is being fed information by an unknown FBI agent. Enter Alex Parker, a former CIA assassin who is commissioned by an unknown government source to take out undesirables in the community such as serial killers and pedophiles. He is set with the task to keep an eye on Mallory, during which he questions if his choices have led his life in the right direction.

The book was told from the point of view of Mallory and Alex for most of the book, with the occasional POV of the villain being reflected. This was a good touch as it helped the reader get a bit behind the scenes. I liked Mallory and Alex as leads. Mallory was a confident female and Alex was a bit of a sweetheart while also being a strong character. As there wasn't too wide of a spread of characters in the book, it was pretty easy to narrow down the likely suspects, especially since the author dropped a few subtle hints, but I still found the plot and twists were enough to keep me entertained and there was a solid amount of detail given. However, if you really like to keep guessing throughout a novel, this might annoy you a bit. There was a good build up of suspense and the relationship side of things heated up early in the book, which I liked.

The author has been really clever offering this book for free as I will definitely be purchasing other books in the series. If you're a fan of this genre, it really is a great read.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst book

I generally do not bother to write reviews of books because different readers have different taste but I felt compelled to write a brief review for this book. The book started out with promise but soon descended into unimaginative dribble to provide some cheap sexual thrills to readers in the middle of a story about a serial killers who abducts, rapes, mutilates, and kills young women. This is probably the tenth book I have read where the main character went into the FBI because of guilt she felt over the fact that her twin sister was abducted twenty years ago and never found. I am sure some readers will enjoy such unimaginative plot and writing. Reading such books dealing with FBI characters one would be led to think that the FBI is full of screwed up agents who suffer from childhood or adulthood psychological trauma and drown their sorrow in single malt whisky and getting drunk. Of course, all male agents are tall and handsome with strong broad shoulders and females agents are incredibly beautiful. GET REAL!!

A Cold Dark Place (Cold Justice Book 1) by Author Toni Anderson

"A Cold Dark Place" is my first exposure to talented Author Toni Anderson and it won't be my last. This suspenseful, romantic, mystery novel is absolutely spellbinding. It is like walking into an on going investigation and getting totally wrapped up in the plot and feeling the intense emotions and fear of the main characters.

Alex Parker is a paid assassin and a member of the American covert operation, Gateway Project. After being extracted from a Moroccan prison he has agreed to a period of time in this clandestine organization whereby the law is circumvented in order to bring about justice quickly and efficiently without the usual red tape of government bureaucracy. In other words, Alex Parker and his partners are vigilantes working outside the law.

Mallory Rooney is a Special Agent for the FBI who is haunted by the abduction of her twin sister Payton at the age of nine years old. Mallory actually becomes a law enforcement officer so that she can solve the mysterious disappearance of her sister eighteen years earlier. Haunted by love and guilt and with every desire to bring the perpetrator to justice, she works endlessly and methodically to solve this crime. Who abducted Payton from her bed in the middle of the night? Why didn't they take her too? Is she still alive?

Alex and Mallory cross paths when a rapist and murderer is mysteriously shot in the head and the FBI is called to the crime scene. There is an immediate attraction between the two of them although both have no interest in a romantic entanglement. When the plot thickens, Alex makes a decision to protect Mallory at all costs...

I could hardly put down this fast paced, thriller novel. I actually had to do so a few times when it got so intense that I needed to take a breather. However, I couldn't stay away for long as I just needed to see what happened next. Great read!

This was a good storyline but I don’t care about graphic love scenes that last about 25 pages when I bought a thriller!! I also couldn’t stand the filthy language in the book. I just couldn’t take anymore after 43 pages.

I would have given 4 stars but I thought this book was good but didn't need the explicit sexual descriptions. I am not against sex or lovemaking but it can be written about without making it dirty. Other than that the story was exciting and suspenseful.

This was an exciting book, but broke my heart at times. Alex had gone into the CIA with the best of intentions and got caught up in something the CIA would never acknowledge. I can’t imagine the prison Alex was in and what he went through. I am sure when the Gateway Project came to him and told him he could get out if he gave them five years of his life. He was so far gone being captured he probably would have agreed to anything. He hated he had to kill serial killers and pediphiles before they were taken into custody. He ends up meeting Mallory who works for the FBI. My heart broke for her as her exact twin was kidnapped when she was nine years old and never found. This is why she went into the FBI so she could try and find her. Alex and Mallory have some of the same friends and meet each other. I was happy and sad that Alex and Mallory were attracted to each other. The story is so interesting with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the book and strongly encourage you to read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars FROM FEAR TO TEARS

A COLD DARK PLACE is the first book in the Cold Justice series. Reading the book blurbs, I believe each will stand on their own and can be read in any order.

Both Mallory and Alex have been scarred by life in big ways. Finding each other seems to be the first step in finally healing the wounds.

I loved all of the emotions that the story seemed to pull out of me from fear to laughter and ending with tears. There was even a gasp (no, not him!) moment. It had a great balance of mystery, intrigue, hope, fear, romance (even though both don’t date), charm, and steam with a bit of mean-girl drama for fun.

This was the first book I read from Toni Anderson and she has definitely gained a fan. I would recommend this to anyone who loves the NCIS, Criminal Minds type of TV shows.

4/5 Narration: Eric G. Dove’s voice is smooth and easy to listen to as your driving or working. Unfortunately, it’s also easy to let him go into the background if I’m not careful. While every sentence seems to be read with the proper care, there doesn’t seem to be enough theater to keep me in tune. Since I know he reads the rest of the series, I have to assume he improves. I’m looking forward to hearing more.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted audiobook copy via Author’s Direct, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

Wowza! What a ride! Mallory's identical twin, Payton, was kidnapped 18 years ago when they were 9. Mallory now works with the FBI, in part to seek justice; she 'feels' Payton died about a year ago. Alex is the cyber security partner in a private security firm; he also works with a clandestine government program to eliminate serial killers and pedophiles. The romance was wonderful, the suspense was amazing! It's trippy how Ms Anderson gives us a little PoV from the villain that clues us in to what's going on while also obfuscating whodunnit. Best romantic suspense ever!

Sex: multiple scenes
Language: 67 F words, 56 Lord's name in vain, 49 S words
Violence: shootings, knifing, kidnappings, choking, murders, rapes (FBI v serial killer v vigilante)
Cliffhanger: no
Do I need to read books before this one: no
Would I read more of the series: oh yes!!

A Cold Dark Place (Cold Justice Book 1)
By: Toni Anderson
5 out of 5 stars

The story A Cold Dark Place (Cold Justice Book 1) by Toni Anderson is a wonderful book that I loved reading. It is a thrilling story that also has mystery and romance. It is a book that hooks you in right from the beginning and doesn’t let go until you have read the final page. I found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. I enjoyed reading about the characters of Alex Parker and Mallory Rooney Alex is a man that is part of a secret government agency that takes care of those who harm others before they reach the justice system. He is good at what he does. He also holds onto guilt from the past. Special Agent Mallory Rooney is a woman who is beautiful, strong, and independent. She has always felt guilt over the abduction of her identical twin sister. She has always lived in the shadow of that event. Both Alex and Mallory have a past that haunts them. They are both characters that I grew to care about with each chapter that I read and wanted them to find happiness. What will happen when Alex is ordered to watch Mallory because of questions she is asking about a vigilante killer? Is Mallory in danger now that she has started investigating a serial killer? There is an attraction between Alex and Mallory. Will the feelings/emotions that they have be destroyed by the lies and betrayal of Alex’s life? What does the future hold for Mallory and Alex? Read this book to find out. This is a story that had me turning pages. It is suspenseful. The story is written with a lot of detail regarding the investigation of a serial killer and I felt like I was right there with the characters trying to put together the clues and leads of the case. I also enjoyed reading about the part that many of the secondary characters had and their interactions with Alex and Mallory. There is intense and romantic dialogue. There are some steamy moments that make the temperature in the room rise. There are twists and turns that I didn’t see coming. Don’t miss out on an amazing story that had me reminding myself to breathe! I highly recommend it.
