3.0 out of 5 starsNot a bad read/listen
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on January 29, 2018
I have been sitting on A Cold Dark Place for about a week, and it was an okay read. There were somethings a I liked about the story, and other things not so much. First off, I liked that it was in audio for, which my life so much easier. Two, I really liked Alex Parker. Even though he was in the gray area he still had his morals. I mention that this was an audiobook, so I have to mention the narrator, Eric G. Dove, he did a pretty good job reading this title.

In A Cold Dark Place we meet FBI agent Mallory Rooney, who happens to stumble upon a vigilante murder. In her spare time she's trying to find the vigilante while trying to solve a case. Yet, Alex is trying to keep his secret from her and protect her at the same time. Sounds like things are about to get complicated.

A Cold Dark Place wasn't a bad read/listen. There were some parts that I enjoyed a lot and others that were okay. The writing was decent, so I didn't have any real complaints. However, I wish there was a little more suspense instead of sex scenes. Don't get me wrong I don't mind those, but I kind of felt a little overwhelm that they landed in bed a lot while trying to catch a murder. The bad guy was pretty low key which is kind of hard to amp up the suspense. Like I said, I liked Alex a lot. He seemed level headed, but that could be for the fact that he was an assassin. You gotta keep a level head on during a mission. Anyway, Mallory. She wasn't bad, but she wasn't great. Towards the end I wanted smack her across the head, because she was playing dumb. There were times I had to stop the story, and try not to chuck my phone. She got a little irrational towards the end. However, things work out in the end. I wish the author dove a little more into Payton, who happens to be Mallory's twin sister. I think this would explain a lot more of Mallory's actions.

Overall, A Cold Dark Place wasn't a bad read. It peaked my interest to the other FBI agents Mallory was working. I might try another book to see if this the series will work for me. Plus, it's a first book in the series, and sometimes they are little rougher. You gotta work out the kinks.

I like the chemistry between Malory and Alex. They fell for each other the moment they met. She is working for the FBI and he is the government's assassin. I like how the villain is still pursuing his target, he is a strong character, unpredictable, and both Malory and Alex need to give their best if they want to catch him.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very confronting and suspenseful.

I will admit this right up front. I bought this book because I wanted to listen to Eric Dove narrate another book since I'm completely besotted with his voice. I saw this was a romantic suspense and decided it sounded decent enough that I would give it a shot.

The short of it is I love listening to Eric narrate but the story is a little too graphic and gruesome for me.

It's very difficult to tell you how I feel about the two main characters in the story as this is one of those romantic suspense stories which focuses more on the suspense than the romance and building the relationship between the hero and heroine, though there are a number of rather sizzling encounters between them. Throughout the story, I had a hard time trying to come to terms with who Mallory and Alex were as people.

Mallory is an FBI agent and she's suffered a terrible loss in her childhood which she is still trying to solve. These two things define her and because of it, she is single-minded, driven and married to her work. She lived for the sole purpose of solving the mystery of her sister's disappearance. To me, those things do not give her character enough depth for me to connect with her and get to know her. I found this made her a very single dimensional character for me. I would have liked her to have been more multi dimensional but I also understand that was what drove her and made her who she was.

I adore Alex. He's so many things. Soldier, war hero, prisoner of war, security consultant, friend, assassin, lover and protector. He's so troubled and honorable at the same time. He is conflicted about what he has to do and while he's not crazy about what he has to do, he's honest about it and he's honest with himself. I loved that he was so protective and caring of Mallory, right from the beginning. He was a man marking time until Mallory came into his life, then caring for someone change the meaning of his life and even when things got crazy and he was in an untenable situation, he was strong enough to do what was right for Mallory first and foremost. That made him a hero for me.

Here is a favorite moment of mine in the story:

Her mouth went dry. How could she not fall for a guy who went out of his way to protect her while also giving her the space she needed to do her job? Just looking at him made her ache. “Tell me you aren’t as perfect as you seem, Alex.” “Not even close to perfect.” His blue- gray eyes darkened. “Not a complete a--hole either.”

The suspense aspect of the story is very well researched and written. In fact, some of it is so graphically described it makes me sick to my stomach. Certain things happen in the story that leave me feeling rather unpleasant, one of which to Mallory when she gets interrogated by a distrustful colleague, to cite one of the milder instances.

Listening to this story being narrated to be, even with listening to Eric's wonderful voice, left me feeling slightly nauseated. This story should have come with a warning label that says "Warning: Graphic content. This story contains scenes that some people may find disturbing!"

I would have liked to have seen some more time spent on developing the relationship between Alex and Mallory rather than the detail in describing some of the dead bodies they were finding at crime scenes.

I would also have liked better insights into Mallory as a person which gave her character greater depth. It would also have made the romance much more credible if they spent more time together in order for their relationship to develop as they got to know each other. This didn't happen till a good way into the second part of the story and then it felt rushed. As it was, the story spent most of its time jumping between both characters, most of which with them spent apart. How can you build a relationship when you spent more than 60% of the story apart?

If you like a really good romantic suspense, heavy on the suspense, you will enjoy this. There were parts of it that were thoroughly heart pounding.

I think I will wait a while before tackling the other books in the series just for a bit of a breather from the excitement, even if they are all narrated by Eric. I'll move on to some other things he's narrated and take a break from the gruesome.

After reading a lot of Contemporary Romance novels lately, I absolutely loved reading a book filled with suspense. And ‘A Cold Dark Place’ definitely has a lot of suspenseful moments. From the moment I started reading I was hooked and I was excited to learn more about Mallory, Alex and the disappearance of Mallory’s twin sister Payton. There was a lot going on and I found myself sitting on the edge of my seat.

The suspense in this book was definitely exciting. This book alternated from going from Mallory’s point of view, to that of Alex’s and to the killers point of view. I loved that! And although it might sound of bit confusing, it definitely wasn’t. I also found there was a perfect blend of suspense and romance.

The two main characters Mallory and Alex where very fun to get to know and I enjoyed getting to know them. Both characters where a bit tragic in there own way. Mallory, having to live a life without her twin sister and having the exact same face as the little girl that is still being looked for every year by one of the senators. And Alex, the ex-soldier who survived a Moroccan prison and the death of his mates. I loved these two.

‘A Cold Dark Place’ was a wonderful exciting read that kept me hooked. And above all it made me want to read more books by this author for sure. If you’re looking for a Romantic Suspense novel, this one definitely gets my recommendation.

I don't often give 5 stars, but this novel deserves all of them. Fast-paced action and great characterizations. The plot moved smoothly, and I didn't figure out who the killer was until the end.

A riveting thriller with excellent character development. Each of the characters had flaws they desperately tried to hide as they worked to find a serial killer in their midst. Amid the murder and mayhem, a love story developed between two of the characters with backstroke they wanted to stay hidden. Looking forward to reading more from Toni Anderson.

FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has been trying to find the person (or people) that kidnapped her twin sister when they were just nine years old, while she is on a case she becomes suspicious that there may be a vigilante killer out there as well as a serial killer.

Alex Parker worked for the CIA but now he works for a clandestine government organization that takes out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. He is also one of the owners of a high tech security company.

I was really sucked into the story right from the start and while I knew it was a Romantic Suspense I was surprised at how Steamy it was...not sure why since I do like my books steamy but I think I was so into the story and the chase that the romance part of it was secondary especially since both Alex and Mallory were so into their jobs it left little time for anything else. But I totally enjoyed it all!

The Dual POV was great but the real treat was the third one, YES we get into the killer's mind as well for a Third POV. This story was fast paced with lots of action, steamy times, and a wonderful cast of secondary characters. This was my first book by Toni Anderson and I'm hooked! I added all of the books in this series to my TBR shelf and I am THRILLED that I will get more of Alex and Mallory in A COLD DARK PROMISE.

I would recommend this book to those that enjoy Steamy Romantic Suspense Reads, Law Enforcement, Former Military, or Serial Killer Thrillers. And for an extra layer of immersing yourself into the book I would recommend purchasing the audiobook, the narration by Eric G. Dove was really well done.

Happy Reading!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding read and the audio will keep you on the edge

This is not a book you want to listen to as you drive down a dark lonely highway as I found out. The first part about had me jumping out of my seat every time a car got behind me or I past one. I had to chuckle at myself as I drove to work.

I have to say this was one of my favorite listens, it pulled you in and made you setup as the author and narrator told a compelling story that will break your heart as they take you on a thrilling trip of who done it and why.

What shock me the most was this author is from Canada and had the area down so well. I live in the area she wrote about which added to the read for me since I could relate to the towns or cities in this story. She definably did her research.

This was a well written book that flowed easy for me, it kept me on the edge as they raced to the finish line of who did it. I did not find a boring moment in this book but thrills and suspense of who, why and how. The story was gripping, the characters I felt I knew and became wrapped up in their story from the very beginning all the way to the end. I completely fell in love with Alex and Mallory and it tore at my heart wanting them to be together and for justice to be found.

All the characters were outstanding by the time you get to the end you feel you know them and they are apart of your family. Even the killer you hate but you do feel sorry for him, he was pulled into the killing when he was young with the taking of Mallory's twin. There is one place where you even root for him and than you just feel sorry for him and grow to pity him. You are more than glad to see justice done but you are still sad because I do feel he wasn't really a bad man just pulled into something out of his control. You just want him caught so no more women will be killed.

My heart broke for each character as they rush to find the killer and hope to save a few women from harm. This story does have a wonderful happy ending but at the same time it is sad. Ms. Anderson pulled me in and hooked me from the start, the narrator kept me there with his wonderful narration. I do have to say I loved the vigilante I know we should not but he did make sure all those he took out were guilty before giving them justices. I was cheering him on as he shot and killed the killer. I didn't feel guilty at all, does that make me bad?

I love Toni writing style the way she pulls you in and keeps you. I am so looking forward to reading and listening to more books by her. She has been added to my all time favorite authors list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected twists - a wonderful book!

This was my first exposure to Toni Anderson, and she has been added to my list of authors on my future reading lists!

The book follows an FBI agent, Mallory Rooney, who joined the force to find out what happened to her twin sister 18 years prior. She stumbles across information suggesting a vigilante outside of law enforcement, and as she gets closer to the discovery of who this could be - everything changes.

As this is a story revolving around Mallory, her twin sister, a surprising love interest, and the murderer, Anderson often flips back and forth between the point of view of the killer, and the victims, which really adds to the suspense throughout the book. There is a lot of tension in her writing - it is sometimes hard to tell what is going to happen next - which I love! Eventually the killer turns his focus to Mallory herself, which adds an interesting twist to the story.

Mallory has a love interest with a man named Alex. I like that the romance will stay in the background of the story, and then bubble up to the surface, encompassing a few chapters to give you a break from the craziness happening elsewhere. Alex doesn't disclose his history to Mallory for a long time, which is interesting to read as you go through the story and get closer to catching the killer. It definitely complicates their relationship at times, and there were a few instances that I thought the romance would not last to the end of the novel.

With all of the clues there, I skimmed back through after I finished this the first time - between the romance and suspense I was actually surprised when I found out who the killer was. Mallory throws a bit of aa curve ball into the story at the end of the book, I could take it or leave it, but I believe it adds to the rest of the series that I have yet to start reading.
